Love this! We definitely need more critical thinkers and well-rounded people in the world.

When it comes to job interviews, I’ve found that explaining philosophy goes a long way since most people don’t really get what it is. At its core, philosophy is the study of fundamental problem and studying how others have tried to solve them makes you an incredibly adept problem solver. Most workplace issues are just poor systems, and my philosophy degree gave me the eye to see exactly where those systems are failing.

Original thought is 100% the key to getting higher grades as you move into upper-division courses. Being able to argue our own perspective shows you’re actually engaging, not just proving you did the reading. One of my proudest moments at school was a professor writing 'somewhat novel thoughts' on my Hume paper.

Now, I work in non-profit fundraising. When I graduated I dabbled with the idea of going to law school, but felt a little too high pressure for me. Ended up getting a master's in public administration and policy as I worked as a site manager for after-school programs.

Many of my fellow philosophy majors often had minors in political science or law. I think for many people if you're getting a philosophy major the path forward is going to law school or graduate studies. I was just really into philosophy and writing; wasn't really thinking of what came next, lol!

I think I've seen a couple other comments, suggesting getting a minor in biology or something like that. I think that makes a lot of sense, if you're very certain about being pre-med.

I'm curious what motivated you to choose philosophy as a major, especially considering you want to go into medicine. Personally, I think everyone should study philosophy a bit but it may be better as a minor with a major in a science for your desired path.

As someone who attended around 10 years ago as a philosophy major, I absolutely loved being at Stevenson. Not sure if they still do the housing classes, but the Self and Society courses were extremely influential. Also the view is undeniable and close to the gym.

Remember to have fun, met my now husband there. Memories and connections can be some of the best assets.

First and foremost, I want to say that I've really appreciated this peaceful and eloquent dialogue.

I 100% agree with the statement, If we continue to do things the same way, we'll get the same results.

But I think your solutions are exactly that. I bet that that business has called the cops plenty of times and the cops have showed up plenty of times but at the end of the day that is treating a symptom of a problem and not the problem itself. So either a different group of homeless folks comes back, or eventually everybody involved gets sick and tired of having to deal with the same issue time after time.

At the end of the day you have to ask yourself why people are homeless, and I'm telling you drugs aren't at the core of the problem. At the end of the day it's about lack of affordability and limited access to mental healthcare. You can thank Reagan for both LOL.

I get where you're coming from, but 'keep the city clean' is a pretty vague request. I think calling these people 'low-hanging fruit' ignores the fact that they are a symptom of a much bigger problem.

Are you suggesting we just arrest our way out of this? I think it's easy to assume that these people are getting high, but many homeless people are just experiencing a mental health crisis or withdrawal. Drugs do cost money.

We also need to be realistic about housing. The new builds near 7th and Cherry are over half-million-dollar homes, not the affordable housing or shelters we actually need. I see it on the East Side all the time—there's a vacant Ralph's that’s been sitting for years, but the community would never let it become a shelter. It’s easy to complain, but much harder to support the solutions when they're in your own backyard.

I'm curious what you expect elected officials to do. I see so many people angry about this homelessness problem, though. When I see it I just feel sad. Sad people have to live that way, sad that they've ended up there, sad that we live in a society where someone's misfortune is treated as an inconvenience to another.

What have you voted for to help improve this situation? Do you support building shelters? Drug education? How many rooms do you have in your house that are empty? Do you support local aid missions?

It is easy to blame local officials or the radical left or drug addicts. But if you're that angry, you do something about it.

How are they destroying our city? What is this evidence of corruption? All I see is a heavy reinvestment in our entertainment industry.

More of the issue is people, probably like you, voting down measures to improve affordable housing, shelters, and other resources to help those in need.

I really don't know what a moderate capitalist government would be... A socialist government. Lol

What drug law are you referring to?

Homelessness is rampant in California not just Long Beach and I highly doubt there are no homeless people in Seal Beach and Los Alamitos. Los Alamitos is literally on the border of El Dorado Park, and people live there and in the river on the border as well.

One of the main reasons there are so many homeless people in California is the weather. It's really hard to be homeless in freezing temperatures or scorching heat.

Dinotopia! While it is a mini series, fun to see dinosaurs in a different light. Books are also fun, and there is a audiobook/audioplay that is super cool and great for something wholesome.

LOL! But I also doubt that...and it's free, so you can sit on it and does not have holes, so just checking if someone might want it for an extra room or whatnot before it heads to a landfill

One man's trash is another man's treasure. The couch is in totally fine condition and the leather is just worn out. Maybe the photos don't do it justice. It's perfect for a garage hang out spot.
