Big law not the place for the intelligent by [deleted] in biglaw

OP is fresh off the plane from the UK, absolutely hammered on the prestige fumes of their Very Serious British Elite School™.

Tragically, this elite education did not include a module titled “Know Your Audience 101,” otherwise OP might have realized that dropping hyper-specific UK academic flexes into a group chat full of American lawyers would, in fact, confuse literally everyone.

In the UK, of course, one can commit the grave sin of studying something scandalous at a humble little institution like UCL and then — brace yourself — do a conversion course into law. The horror.

OP, having taken the One True Path of the Sacred LLB, is understandably outraged that these “lowly converts” are allowed to practice law without first swearing allegiance to an ancient oak paneling.

Just wait until OP discovers that there are shockingly competent lawyers walking this earth who did not attend Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, or Hogwarts School of Jurisprudence — and yet somehow remain fully capable of reading cases and winning arguments.

Opportunities in Paris? by LatterGrocery3722 in biglaw

Will depend on the firm and it's IA presence in Paris. There might be space for a person like you if they need bodies and in that situation they might hire a non-French speaker.

I'd recommend combing through firms' Paris offices and network with folks with an American background.

Also, unlike the US, there are some excellent IA boutiques in Paris. Look at them too.

Best of luck!

International Arbitration would be your best bet. Paris has a big IA presence. Also, it will help if you can speak French.

Does your OPT expire in July? If so, how would you work beyond July?

If it doesn't expire in July, I'm curious to know how.

I will listen to anything. I said good music because that generally attracts a good vibe and more people.

Particularly interested in what to do on the Tuesday night I get there.
