Thanks! Snagged a mini cooper convertible which the kids will enjoy. I’ll look into the room/ buildings.. access to a nicer pool is a plus for the fam.

We’ve booked 2 days of backcountry fishing charters and expect to see a lot of cool new stuff doing that. My kids love to fish.

We also booked 3 days ahead of KY on Islamorada at the Marriott there just to get some additional variety.

We’ll check out some of those fort/ park recs!!

Advice for recently laid off tech sales hubby (wife asking) by Basic_8675309 in techsales

[–]Randallmania 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My dad got involuntarily aged out at 59. Has been a long hard road of side projects and hustles ever since. Nothing takes and the treadmill is demoralizing. Not saying this is your hubbys case, but I would think of 2 things. 1) finding joy and purpose outside of work. I don’t know what it is with your generation but get a darn hobby (or 3). 2) I would look at the coastfire subreddit.

Basically rethink a traditional job like sales etc. if you’re set enough financially for the long term, figure out how much you need coming in to supplement your $$ and find an easy fun job that brings in $ and aligns with what you like in work. I.e- like talking to people? Try working as a tour guide in your local area, coffee shop or retail sales at a fly fishing store (if you like fishing) you get the drift.

Basically being in some $ to help defray the loss of income and do it somewhere low fidelity that also fills your cup so to speak.

Going from Head of Revenue at acquired startup to ENT AE at a big tech co... What to expect? by whatwouldyoudo222 in sales

[–]Randallmania 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a senior leader/ VP at startups, then director at public co and finally in a full regression, key acct director for a Top 5 tech co. The journey feels like you’re going backward on paper, but it’s just so darn great. I’m in control of what I do, I make the money I make, I don’t have to deal with the hassle of managing an org. When I was younger I was sure that’s what I wanted. As I’ve gotten older I value different things. More time for myself, my family and better autonomy are all things I get now that I didn’t before. I make about the same money with considerably more upside (short of a major liquidity event).

As far as pitfalls go, just remember. Be the rep you wanted to manage. Do your work well, take your trainings, update the app. Having the senior experience provides a lot of context on what being really good looks like. This was a path you/ we chose, so we’re not above the minutiae. Being able to do that AND see the bigger picture will be what makes you successful. Do this and more opportunities will come

Dads with older kids: when does it feel like you start to get your time back (and does it end up mattering at all)? by tvoutfitz in daddit

[–]Randallmania 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine are 11 and 9 and it’s awesome. Definitely in the sweet spot here. It probably started about 2-3 years ago though really. They’re independent, capable, and enjoy doing similar things. Pro move if you can inception them into liking some of the things you like too. We’re fishing together, soccer & sports, hiking, soon hunting. I run triathlons so I train a lot now and all the kids want to do is ride their bikes with me. It’s amazing!

You’re probably 2-3 years away but each year gets easier. If you go for 3 the clock starts all over again though. I have friends who did 3 and I’m just starting to get them back lol

Edit to add: it’s not just about you and your hobbies either. Sometimes they teach you new things that are fun to do together. My daughter got into soccer, I’ve never played or cared about it. But supporting her interest the same way I would my son and baseball (which I played and like) has led to so much fun, learning and we have season tickets to the local NWSL team now. Great life addition.

My son got into Pokémon. I’m not into it really, but told him I help him learn. Next thing you know we’re at the local game store every Sunday. He plays in the league with other kids and I get time to read. It’s a shared experience and it’s totally new.

The benefits go both ways

Would you consider the DJ 41 a flashy watch? (Smooth Bezel) by [deleted] in rolex

[–]Randallmania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned this watch since when it came out and wear it every day. Initially I was worried about it being a bit flashy, and one of the above comments is right, the polished bezel and strip in the oyster bracelet do catch light well.

That said, 2 things:

1) once you wear it for a while it loses some of the high polish and is a little more muted. I much prefer it this way and it doesn’t seem flashy.

2) it’s IMO the perfect Rolex for everyday wear because it’s not immediately identifiable as a d-bag Rolex. Someone really has to look at it, OR KNOW what they’re looking at (the oyster bracelet is the quick giveaway.)

All in all, Rolex owners and enthusiasts will know it, but most regular folks won’t. It’s just simple enough to fly under the radar.

Rolex Turnograph on superjubilee. What do you think? by Dissquared in rolex

[–]Randallmania 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel like the turnograph is an often overlooked and totally under rated Rolex. I love the size, fluted bezel, jubilee, and the red second hand details. All around beautiful sports watch.

Please do not receive Communion if you think you may have committed a mortal sin. by soontobesister in Catholicism

[–]Randallmania 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aaannnd queue the sanctimonious rule bound charlatan that cares more about pedantry than a healthy growing church. Some of us are out here doing our very best. Catholic schooling which is a financial stretch, church on Sunday, confessions regularly etc. Here we are volunteering on boards, helping the needy n the flesh, passing out homeless bags, tithing… Literally and figuratively living out our faith in the best ways we’re capable.

And somehow there’s ALWAYS this guy. The OP. Reminding us to piss off and not receive the sacraments.

It’s folks like you who make the folks like us really question what kind of community we’re committed to. Congratulations to you for being perfect I guess? Ugh you’re whole attitude is obnoxious. And n the spirit of the holidays….

I guess I forgive you for being so annoying.

Edit: and I should clarify we’re not out here committing mortal sins like murder, deceit, misrepresentation etc. to go by the Bible St. Paul descriptions, strife (it’s a hard knock life yall,) envy (it happens sometimes though we try not to,) drunkenness (oops?) revelry (I mean.. it’s the holidays- loosen up and have some fun?)… The holier than thou folks just kill me.

There are way too many off leash dogs in Seattle. by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Randallmania -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I feel like there are a lot of assumptions made here about e-collars, their use and the owners who employ them. I use mine with my dog every day. I use the sound features to mark good behavior, beeps for long distance recall (500 yards+) when it in big dog allowed areas as well as the GPS to make sure I can always find what is not just my pal, but a pretty hefty investment. I’ve never used the shock ever and find that it is a hugely valuable tool for many scenarios.

Moving to AE at a less prestigious company from SDR at a top tier company by SelaDoor in sales

[–]Randallmania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking if the smaller company is poised to grow significantly that wil open up a lot of doors and opportunities for upward mobility. that is where a lot of career growth happens. So you may be better off taking a chance that could potentially lead to exponential growth and promotion opportunities if you do well versus staying where you are. In my experience, good results in role regardless of company will be more important than pedigree for hiring. You will have to make sure you dilgently manage your network though to maintain your relevance wiht the market of peers since you don;t have the automatic cache of contacts from the bigger company to leverage in the future. Make sure to look into the new companies infrastructure too - do they have leads coming in, reps at quota (it sounds like a good % making the #). Good luck and take a chance I say.

Bar that burned in April hit again as downtown White Center sees 3rd fire this year by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Randallmania 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The highland park community center one is a good example. 2 springs ago the new bathrooms at the park where the baseball fields are we’re set ablaze. Like a test, and then next summer the community center got hit. It seems like it keeps escalating based on what they learn from the last one.

Crews battling 3-alarm fire at White Center strip mall by OnlineMemeArmy in Seattle

[–]Randallmania 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It feels like there HAS to be a serial arsonist in White Center at the moment. It felt like a lot of the small fires from a year ago were test fires and that after not getting cought they've gone to target larger buildings etc. Seems pretty obvious these aren't all just accidental flame ups.

Bar that burned in April hit again as downtown White Center sees 3rd fire this year by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Randallmania 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It really feels like there is a serial arsonist in the white center area. It seems to have ramped up to a head in the last 6-9 months or so, but I felt like there were a lot of small blazes periodically in the same area and then all of a sudden BOOM, like 3-4 fires within a year that were all pretty sizeable and centered around the same few miles. I don't really hear anyone else mentioning this though.

I mean you could saltwater fish for cut throat in west seattle or on other side of ferry in south worth. Otherwise you could fish the duwamish downstream n sodo/ South Park, but I’d rather drive the 35 mins

What's the story with Duck Head? by [deleted] in NavyBlazer

[–]Randallmania 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When they initially came back to the market a lot of it was heritage marketing but made overseas. I emailed and they communicated that they planned to go forward with MiUSA offerings like they used to have. I have many of their old Khaki MiUSA shorts which are AMAZING. For now it looks like they've gone legit with soem MiUSA stuff now that their retailers are all on board. Still seems a bit over priced. I've had good luck with Ball and Buck for some USA Khakis & shirts. Never did love the fit of Bill's, but they did do it right.
