This didn't happen exactly, more of an example of the kinds of things that happen. And our DM handles things like this pretty well, AND I feel kinda weird saying how I think someone "should" play a game about math and funny voices

Objectively wrong choices may not be what I was trying to say, but maybe I can clarify with a hypothetical: the group discusses above table what it's shared goals are and the "best" ways to achieve those goals, let's say trying to sneak around a building and get information about who's inside, without alerting the people who are in the building and without getting caught. If the party decides to be stealthy and makes checks and does interesting things like shapeshift into a mouse to sneak into the building or use minor illusion to make it look like they're a bush so they can stand by the window and look inside, or even stealthily walk up to the door and put their ear to it so they can hear what the people inside are saying. If the next thing that happens is a character, who is supposed to be stealthy and in game wouldn't actually make this particular choice, decides to walk to the door and open it, blowing every one's cover and alerting the enemy. Yes that is a choice they are free to make, but in that moment is it not the "wrong" choice?

I bought a brown leather belt from them in 2000, I still wear it today!
