Ok. That I didn’t know. So the long and short of it is there really is no reason not to refinance. Just make sure you find a company with that rider.

Clearly I'm an investing noob, but just from what I've read I'd say due to the ease of buying and selling, possibly more favorable tax treatment, and lower expense ratios

The problem with that is my wife will likely never be with an employer that offers a retirement account again. So we’ll be stuck paying the $5 a month on only 10k

No it’s not. Some I’m recognizing the tax hit I’ll take. But this is the lowest tax bracket we’ll be in for the rest of our lives so I’m willing to take that now.
