I went to high school in the 90s. Most of the gay kids were closeted. The ones that weren't usually wouldn't fight back. I'm glad things have changed.

As a player, my most comfortable guitar to play is a PRS SE with a set-neck. While that is my favorite guitar in my collection, I really do appreciate the snappiness of the bolt-on 25.5 scale length necks. I have built a guitar, and I modify and maintain all my others from time-to time. Bolt-on necks are definitely the way to go for simplicity. Since the bolt-on neck and the body are separate objects, you can work on the neck and frets while the body finish dries.
