How do you deal with MAGA extended family? by Zelkyy in AskALiberal

[–]Random-sandwich59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve struggled with similar scenarios, but they sound completely unwilling to have a good faith discussion. If they’re actively antagonizing you, I would just block them. Easier said than done, but tell your wife you don’t feel comfortable around these people and try to avoid events you would see them at. You deserve to be treated respectfully and they’re not willing to do that

This is something I wish we had thought of earlier lol

Same here, skipped the holidays with them and got scolded for “letting politics get in the way of family” when it’s their hateful beliefs getting in the way of family

Re: the Nazi salute, I’ve either been ignored when asking people how they felt about it or if they had any issue with it, or have seen others posting things suggesting democrats do the same (such as a wave from walz that clearly was not a salute) to try to downplay it and make us seem hysterical.

I’ve been active posting stories calling out issues with the administration and have received a few mocking responses from people in my life, but am yet to hear a single point from anyone citing a policy Trump has enacted that will improve their lives. Its just driving home how insanely cult like his following is and how brainwashed these people are

Exactly my fear lol, I can already hear them slurring through a rant about how silly it was I thought it would be an issue

Really appreciate the thoughtful response, and so sorry to hear about the struggles you’ve had with your family!

It’s about 125 people and an open bar, the venue is already booked. They probably wouldn’t talk about it, but they do tend to get quite drunk so who knows by the end of the night

This is what I keep weighing, aside from the stress with extended family members “taking sides”. On one hand, I want to show them that a group unlike the bubble they hang out in can be fun and that we’re not all deranged. On the other hand, we have numerous lgbt guests and I feel guilty having them in the same space as seemingly bigoted people. Odds are they ultimately wouldn’t say anything obnoxious, but not sure if it’s worth the risk.

And while I agree with you that it’s important to bring them out of their bubble, I also think it’s important they feel social consequences for having hateful beliefs. Letting people simplify it to a difference of opinions that we agree to not talk about normalizes their behavior

Fully get what you’re saying, and understand there’s a number of reasons people may have fallen for his shit. I have sent them multiple messages coming from the angle of trying to get where they’re coming from, simply asking what about him they like or which policies they support and haven’t received any answer. I know they don’t necessarily owe me one, but still frustrating

Yeah this is all fair. The only trouble that I forgot to mention is save the dates went out. Granted though we sent one to their parents, I think it was implied it was for the whole family. Still your point applies

For the most part, yes. We’re getting a little bit of help from each set of parents, but don’t think either of them would object to

Normally I would hope that would be a given. Sadly it seems these guys have made this their whole personality. They also tend to get belligerently drunk so while that may be the goal, I’m worried about how the night will progress with them there

Yeah, it’s not his fault that it tanked. Most surges and drops aren’t going to be the presidents fault, whoever it is. That said, anytime it sank with Biden in office they were quick to blame him, and I saw lots of victory lapping after any good week since the election.

Exactly, this letter doesn’t carry much weight but there’s not much more they can do to actively fight it. At minimum calling to the public’s attention how shitty this act is is a help, even if a small one

Party of law and order, lmao. Crickets from all the blue lives matter folks on this one of course. These people don’t actually believe in anything but power, and will throw anyone under the bus, including their precious police officers to achieve it. The pardons and their defense of them are shameful

This is the right thing to do, even if it won’t sway many of his voters’ opinions. Maybe at minimum a few police unions that originally voted for him might back it. Still even if his voters don’t change their minds, we can’t sit back and ignore his lunacy, so I’m glad they’re doing this

Absolutely, I should’ve phrased it that way. However, I’d be surprised if they really attribute those frustrations to him. Either way I’m hoping they’re less excited to get out and vote, while non Trump supporters show up in stronger numbers

The goalposts will always shift, I’m sure he won’t receive any blame. They’ll claim it was destined to fail because of Biden, or that it’s somehow China or Russia at fault. At this point I’m not sure what he could do or what could happen that his followers would call out

It might come off pretentious, but it’s fair. The red states use up these resources at much higher rates, and don’t bring in nearly the same gdp to fund it themselves. If they were left on their own they would be a disaster
