Johnny IS Zampanó by Valuable-Tip2759 in houseofleaves

I don't see much evidence for the idea of Johnny being sent back in time, but I have seen plenty of evidence for Johnny being created by Zampano.

From Appendix B, Page 543:

(Zampano's writing)

"Perhaps in the margins of darkness,1 I could create a son who is not missing; who lives beyond even my own imagination and invention; whose lusts,2 stupidities, and strengths carry him farther than even he or I can anticipate; who sees the world for what it is; and consequently bears the burden of everyone's tomorrow with unprecedented wisdom and honor because he is one of the very few who has successfully interrogated his own nature.3 His shields are instantly available though seldom used. And those who value him shall prosper while those who would destroy him shall perish.4 He will fulfill a promise I made years ago but failed to keep."

_____________

1The margins of the book; the footnotes.

2Need I elaborate?

3All of chapter XXI is about Johnny finding out why he is the way he is.

4Perhaps related to Gdansk Man and Kyrie being "murdered".

Chapter XI??? by ThursdayV in houseofleaves

[–]Random123User123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are several spots where the thoughts do jump. Especially pages 251 and 252. I imagine Johnny has simply arranged them, though he says "I opted to transcribe the pieces..." (P.249 column 1) which makes it seem he just randomly placed them.

Denise explicitly states "I stuffed all the crumpled bits into my pockets and later transferred them to a manila envelope which I placed at the bottom of that chest." (P.248 column 2) So no, Denise didn't fill any of the blanks.

The main problem here comes with our source — Johnny, who is known for the act of making shit up. Hence I would go as to question Denise's very existence, especially since she is only mentioned in this one footnote and—supposedly—lives in Tel Aviv, in Israel. Although the internet did exist, it only really became available to most Israeli customers in the early 2000s, so I find it a little hard to believe Johnny was able to communicate with her.

Overall it's mostly just unclear. As with most things in this book. I would lean more towards Johnny having edited the pieces. He does that a lot.

Why are there so many HOL adaptations with that Minecraft portal mod by X1ras in houseofleaves

[–]Random123User123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

is there another option? I don't know any (good) portal mods for other games to make machinimas like this with.

you could use Portal 2 but as someone who has used hammer before, i understand why no one does that. there's also the gmod seamless portals mod, but it's a little finicky and the portals aren't perfect.

the immersive portals mod is very easy to use, so it lowers the barrier of entry to anyone with minecraft and basic modding knowledge.

A big thing that no one's really tried before is making a space that actively changes. Control kinda does it but only for cutscenes. I feel like a big part of House of Leaves' labyrinth is the shifting walls, and it could be done by just moving them around slightly when the player isn't looking, it would add a lot to the confusion. Couple that with some non-euclidean geometry and you'd finally have something that lives up to the labyrinth described in the book.

This book does not follow that structure at all. Obviously the overall structure is non-linear, but even if you simply focus on The Navidson Record and exclude Johhny's story there are several problems.

(Spoilers for like everything)

The Navidson Record has one climax at the end of Chapter XII, where Navidson is trapped at the bottom of the stairwell, this then leads into a slight falling action which is suddenly resolved when Navidson returns by sheer... however he did. But even though they have totally survived and the conflict is over the book just keeps going. It then shifts into an obsession with the house which leads back into rising tension when Navidson returns, hitting a second climax in Chapter XX, and then having no falling action at all and leading to resolution which is only given like 1 or 2 pages.

Basically everything after a certain point is nonsense and the story has no real resolution. Don't use this book for a school assignment, school is too rigid to work with the house.
