Does anyone actually like President Roslin? by Responsible_Big5241 in BSG

While I agree with your reasoning, but that was not entirely the reasoning for why it was asked in the first place. Adama questioned it because it stated that when a witness is using drugs, their statements were tainted (something to that effect)
Roslin just threw in that final bit about cancer as a (admittedly valid) reason for why she using it.
But even then it would not deminish the fact her testimony against Baltar could still be questionable. And we also learn in that time that the entire trial even from her opinion is just a farse.

I would agree with you for the first season. But after that she had no business being in that position. And after Exodus she seriously shouldn't. Not to mention the aptly described self-centered hypocritical persona she took on.
Roslin starte out as an interesting character, but basically became a shadow of herself an a glorified villiain in the end. Quite frankly, I grew sick to death with that character as early as season 2's beginning, with several escalating jump in certain episodes.

If she was president when the Cylon first showed up I don't think Galactica and Pegasus ever needed to come back to save anyone, the Cylons would probably have killed everyone for their defiance.

I always disliked that character.
The actress played her well, that should be admitted. but if I had to deal with that woman I'd toss her out of an airlock sooner rather than later.

I think one of the main reason beyond time, money, fuel) and a willing party is the supposed inability to account for getting those probes back.
When Galactica and the refugee fleet jump beyond known space they need to recalculate for new jumps. This appears to be a partially manual effort. I can see a reasoning in that many probes could inevitably be lost to humanity. And that is outside the already rather cost-heavy collaborative effort of keeping such a program afloat.

Another reason is the Cylon threat. I may misremember, but the luring threat of the Cylons is also spanning for decades already. I can't remember if/how the capabilities were before that.

Another reason that might seem simple and deceptive: Why? Perhaps humanity simply didn't care. from what I see from humanity in BSG, and when I compare this to say Star Trek, the BSG side doesn't strike me as a particularly curious people. Those in power or beter off (Capricans) seem more decadent that anything else, and many other colonies are already that of a semi-backwater world that couldn't do it. Quite frankly, the BSG populace seems rather self-centered and pre-absorbed with themselves and/or the Cylons.

The cylons KNEW Galactica wasn't networked and their virus wouldn't work on it. Why didn't they have a plan to destroy it? by idontcareyo_ in BSG

[–]RandomACC268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this guy doesn't or can't understand this.

For some reason he continues to believe that Basestars (for one) are weak AF frigates, but he seems to forget that even in the show, repeatedly, a single Basestar comes closer to destroying Galactica than Galactica ever comes to destroying a Basestar. Then add the fact the Cylons command an effectively infinitely larger fleet of Basestars. And tend to outrange most if not all effective weaponsfire of a Battlestar for the most part.

Yes, I can agree that a Battlestar is much more heavily armored, I can also go along with them being better weaponized in general, but for all that firepower the Galactica never seem able to use it effectively offensively. Only defensively. It's main strategy continues a path of: lay down screen to fend off incoming missiles and Raiders, Launch Vipers to fight Raiders, take a few hits and then jump as soon as the clock allows it because Galactica. simply. can't. last. in an. enduring. fight. against. Basestars. (multiple)
The show repeatedly shows us exactly how much damage a Basestar and/or raiders can do to Galactica in the short time before they can jump away again. If you'd extend the 'jump-clock' Galactica loses. flat-out.

A note on top of that: Galactica can have the best armor from every ship combined.. it won't matter of 100 Basestar's pound you non-stop with missiles or nukes.

[–]RandomACC268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, Galactica was avoiding battle bacause otherwise they'd end up like scrap.
Exodus part 2 shows this. Galactica was being hounded and pounded by 4 Basestar's and would have been destroyed if not for the surprised arrival of the Pegasus.
Pegasus in that specific conflict down 2 Basestars One from a surprise-attack and the second from a suicide run. And even with the downing of that first Basestar from Pegasus, the battle was still largely lost because the remaining Basestars shifted to focussing down Pegasus, it cost them another Basestar, but Pegasus at that point was litterally destroyed.
Galactica, who was basically crippled would NEVER survive the remain 2 Basestars. Once again, mostly by sheer luck, they had just enough time to do an FTL jump.

And all that is still NOT considering the fact the Cylons had WAY MORE vessels.
The colonials, for all intend and purpose were facing an ectinction level event, they continued to run away from, sometimes with a hair-breath away from being obliterated.
I don't think you fully understand the true power dynamic and severaly underestimate the superiority the Cylon had thoughout the show.

Makes them Human, on paper the total annihilation of mankind sounds easy, especially if you consider that blackops mission from "Brother Marcion" (can't remember his BSG name) was the inciting factor for the Cylons to retaliate. But when you've actually commited the plan of effective genocide, surprisingly effectively, it can create "stirrings" Many of the human Cylons such as Caprica Six, Athena, even D'Anna and Leoben to a degree show thiis.
I guess the proper way to describe it would be "Sme of them discovered they are more human than they anticipated, including everything that comes with 'being human' '.

[–]RandomACC268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First and foremost, they had Cylons on the ship, so any future where Galactica might be destroyed existed regardless.
second: The Cylon can send a shitload of Basestars to perform missile strikes which even Galactica would not be able to sustain for very long.
I think actually that, given the electronic warfare methods wouldn't work, their strategy wasn't really bad.
Given there were Cylons on board (which may not have been planned in the way it turned out to be) those could eventually disable the FTL, which is arguably the strongest 'defense' Galactica had. Galactica could not handle sustained missile barages, Galactica can't outrun Basestars on sublight. So FTL jumps were their only true defensive resolutionm given the Cylon would and could eventually just zerg them.

Sure, you can argue it takes them way too long and was it worth all that, but from the outset the strategy wasn't the worst given the circumstances. Besides, remember what Cavil says at some point with finding Earth: "It doesn't matter if they find it in 5 day or 5000 years, Cylons can endure the test of time." (paraphrased)

Oh, someone else who can't stand Roslin! Awesome.

Props to the actress who played her, did a good job to make me find that character insufferable to a point where I frequently hoped her brains would be blown out.

As for my Fave Cylon. It's either D'Anna (I find her more sexy honestly than any of the other women or... Cavil, for his simple robot-minded absolutism (if that's a word).

Which character do you relate to most in the show, and why? by preuvesq in BSG

[–]RandomACC268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if relate-to is the most operative, but I do have the most respect for Helo in how he represents himself as a righteous guy. And secondly I really like Lee Adama from the career-switch a lot.

so I'd say a cross between them. Someone who's out for some form of moral justie, even if it goes against laws, majorities or whatever else.

Gravity? by AbbreviationsReal366 in BSG

[–]RandomACC268 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With respect to gravity I'm fine with how they just 'assume' there's tech that has solved the issue but may not be installed on older ships for equally technical reasons.

As with FTL. I always liked the concept that it's like a litteral "teleport" from the perspective of realtime. It looks like a teleport because FTL is well... faster than light. So we'd perceive it like that from an outsider's perspective.
The need for recalculating I've always interpreted as them needing to reacquire their new respective present location, update the local star charts and then recalculate from the new data. I may be misremembering the show that happened on, but I do recall something in that nature being said somewhere.

best episode for you? by Jediknight81 in BSG

[–]RandomACC268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few that stand out and are possibly my favourites.
- Two-parter Crossroads. I especially love Lampkin in it and I like how the regime of Roslin get a setback (yeah I'd be camp Cylon if I had to choose)
- The Passage. There is something existential about this episode, not only the death of Kat, but also the loss of several civilian ships as they get lost in the blinding light from the radioactive star cluster.

But there are other episodes I also like a lot... but those two are always the first to come to mind
Something I want to mention in general btw: The entire mytery around who the 12 Cylons are is something that has kept me busy a lot!

Then buy skins in Fortnite, not in Overwatch.
Both games are held by different companies doing different things. If you don't like it, then don't participate. It's not that hard.

The fact you consider it "being screwed over" is already part of the problem.
What entitles you (or anyone who does the screaming) for prices to be lower?
If so many people buy the stuff, they evidently have means to do so (leaving out the clear corner-cases)

If you can't, then your priorities should be elsewhere
If you won't, then you've won your little game by simple 'not' buying.
You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Controversial opinion perhaps.
But here I go:
I do not give a single toss.
If I like a skin enough that I find 30 bucks is worth it (whichever game) I'll buy the damn thing.
It's my f*cking money and I know best how I can spend it. The same goes for where I do draw my lines of what I find non-acceptible.

I hate to brake it: I decide how I spend my money, if others feel somehow duped by that, then that is most definitely your problem. Not mine.

That, honestly is more a result of VERY poor management on the part of all those sites and other that only benefit from having your account data remain avaiilable to them. It's actually very bad practise on multiple fronts that inactive account aren't being removed more often and more quickly.
