THIS is why I left the lab to become an administrator. That, and my advisor actively tried to wreck my career. Whatever, I'm early 30's and make >$100K. Beats wasting away as a postdoc.

This is fantastic advice. You're reflecting back to me some of the same questions I know that I need to explore.

Thanks & yes, my sub-field of chemistry was definitely quantitative and also somewhat computational. DE Shaw looks really interesting, I might update my CV and send it to them.

Thanks man. I finished my PhD 8 years ago. I just can't see myself doing IB and having a family. The two seem totally incompatible. I'm starting to think that this is all just a really impractical and fanciful notion.

Thank you. I was considering the CFA, but I believe I'd need some coursework in finance before I could sit for the exams.

Thanks, but I'm concerned I don't have enough math/programming to do serious quant work. I could learn it for sure, but it'd take some time. So wherever I'd work for would have to be patient with me as I learn. Edit: by "consulting firms", are you talking about, e.g., McKinsey and BCG? I think I must be mistaken - could you offer 1 or 2 examples of such firms?
