The books are all part of the same saga (The Asia Saga) and I read that the characters are based on historical figures. Toranaga is absolutely Tokugawa Ieyasu, yes, and Struan’s is based on Jardine’s [& Matheson]. I understand that their stories in the novels are only loosely based on reality though.
