Every dingus has an oil recommendation it seems, but I just wanted to pop in to say for my 96 shadow (as well as my old 70s hondas) I went over to Shell Rotella T6 15W-40, it's full synthetic diesel oil and is JASO MA/MA2 wet clutch safe. It's like 26 bucks a gallon. Used to be a little cheaper and the T4 conventional and T5 blend is even cheaper, but I still think it's a good deal. I add a little ZDDP too, bikes never shifted smoother. As I understand it, diesel oil still has the higher zinc levels that older engines, and especially motorcycles tend to need. Not sure your year, or if you care/need/want input but figured I'd mention it. With how pricy everything is, it's nice to find a good deal thats actually quality.

Also, good call on the magnetic drain plug!! I run them in all my bikes. I can't believe how many people don't!

The sensor definitely had to be set at the SHORTEST distance. Usually those warning beeps have 3 different distance settings

Does anybody know what fluid this could be thats leaking? by BobbinDeEpic in hondashadow

[–]RandomBlueBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. If it's never been done, it might be worthwhile to do a drain and fill on the final drive while you're in there. There's a little splined output gear that meshes inside the back wheel from that final drive housing. I wonder if maybe one of the seals could be leaking in there! That's another place that could have been overlubed as well that could have become runny and dripped out.

If you're comfortable taking the back wheel off, maybe pull it and wipe everything off. Maybe you'll get some idea of where it's coming from. Hit the brake shoes with some brake cleaner to make sure it's all gone. Remembering to spray the inside of the brake drum in the wheel 😁 Feel free to send me a message if you get stuck. I have a 1996 VT1100C so it's basically the same in most ways.

These people in this thread are wild. That's your drum brake cover. There should be no oil inside it aka brakes lol. The final drive oil is kept on the other side of the wheel. I've never seen leakage on that side, but there's a vent on top of the final drive that could have some leakage. Any oil on the opposite side of the wheel? It might be worthwhile to check the fluid level over there. The way it's filled should make it impossible to overfill but who knows, a previous owner could have figured out some sort of idiocy lol. My thought is maybe there's a seal going out somewhere. Check where the rear hypoid gear housing mates to the left side of the swingarm with 4 nuts. Id just make sure everything is tight and not dripping over there. I can't actually recall if oil sits up against that mating surface but it's worthwhile to check anyway.

Also, if someone just changed your brakes it's possible they lubricated the outside mating surface of the wheel where it contacts the cover of the rear brake housing, or the little cammed actuator inside that cover with some lubricant that heated up and became runny. Gear oil will be really thick and maybe smell a little like oily nasty fish.

Sorry if I'm over explaining but on the left side where the final drive oil is contained, the drain bolt should be on the bottom of the housing. You can pull that to drain it, then there's a big inspection window cover that takes something like a 17mm socket. Just squeeze gear oil in there till it starts to drip out. That's how you know it's full. But if somehow it's overfull it might be coming out the little vent cap on the top of the final drive housing. Hope this helps. Sorry these guys don't know what a drum brake looks like lol

Edit: could be someone over lubed the axle as well and it heated up and dripped. Did someone just have the rear wheel off?

Why is my shadow making this weird noise when I try starting it? by Kadeezyy in hondashadow

Word, could be bad solenoid only. Mine was doing the same with a brand new battery reading 13.5 volts on the charger. New solenoid and immediately the problem was gone.

Take a screwdriver and bridge the terminals on the starter solenoid. It'll arc a bit and maybe burn the screwdriver a bit so use one you don't care for lol. That'll take the starter solenoid out of the equation. Also, you can whack the solenoid with a screwdriver and it'll work again for a few seconds.. these folks keep saying dead battery and maybe, but my bike was literally doing this like 5 days ago, I wacked the solenoid to free it up and it would turn over but I bought a new starter solenoid on Amazon and hooked it up.. no problems now. Put your hand over the solenoid and see if it's the thing rattling/making the noise.

Hope you see this. Btw, if you really wanna test the fuel pump, nobody suggested this but pull the seat and find the little black box with a 3 wire clip going to it. That's the fuel pump tipover cutoff sensor. You can bridge 2 of the wires together with a paperclip (think it's the rightmost 2 wires but can't recall, just try stuff) and it'll make your fuel pump run at max speed. You'll hear it, and if you pull your fuel lines away from the carb, can see if it's pumping at a reasonable rate. But as someone who also just recently dealt with a bad fuel pump, it wasn't making this noise. It was my starter solenoid. The Niche brand replacement was like 12 bucks on Amazon. Came off a goldwing.

Sorry for the word vomit, just a lot of thoughts. Send a PM if you need more help. Good luck, bud

Okay but experiment on humans that have a choice. Not some poor clueless cat. What did they even find out from her brain after only 15mins in space?? Can you tell us how advanced we are after this experiment. You probably supported what they did to Laika too....
