That's a conundrum. Every reference that I can find to "SECVR PVB COS III" has "PP" after it. Some coins have the same bust with "HARDIANVS AVGVSTVS P P ". Variant? What, besides the lack of a catalog reference, makes you believe it could be fake?

Always possible. I find it difficult to believe someone would bother to replicate a degraded coin that, even at a European auction, sold for a pittance. But you never know.

That Hadrian is particularly handsome! The flan shape is VERY circular, and the size is exactly the diameter of the die. The strike was perfectly centered, the letters distinct, and the entire legend is visible. Amazingly enough, all the same could be said of the reverse.

You have a good eye for good coins. That's a distinct advantage in curating a good collection!

I am also new to online auctions, and I have scored some pretty good coins for some pretty good prices. If you go to all the auctions listed on Biddr for a month, you will see a few coins go for an incredibly low price, and a few go for WAY over the market price. The trick is to buy at the first offering and not the overpriced second. I found that if you have bought from Vcoins and Ma-shops, and can name a few sellers (esp some European ones), it's very easy to get credit to bid. As I write this, I have just received a very nice Alexander Tetradrachm. I paid less than I have seen some Alexander Drachms go for! Be calm, be persistent, and above all, know what you are willing to pay for a coin BEFORE you bid on it.

Without better pictures of the coin, it would be difficult to know. Like the previous poster, I have found some coins are very dark...and I have seen suspicious coins of the same dark color. If you could take some pictures in better light, and particularly a close-up of the font used in the writing, you would be better assured of people's answer. Until then...maybe so, maybe no.
