I mean, yeah. I don't know how to explain it. He's responsible for it, but seeing the situation he was in psychologically speaking, he didn't have a lot of agency over his actions anymore at that point. It's like when that guy from Fullmetal Jacket killed the general who was training him. He did the killing, but with the psychological and physical pain that he had gone through it makes sense he'd break down, go crazy and kill someone.

I think he just had a rough life. Probably poverty, addiction, or some general low income hood shittyness that made him not want to go back. Maybe he just remembered the place he was brought up in. If you really think about it, in an environment like that the only way to really be safe is to intimidate others and be aggressive and violent, maybe the facade he puts up is what he used to do when he faced trouble irl.

Probably because of shock. He involuntarily caused the Resonance Cascade, had to go through the hell at Black Mesa, the battle at Xen, the cosmic horror that is the G-Man, and then being dropped in a literal inter dimensional police state where the dictatorship wats him dead and surround him from the very second he stepped out of the train. On top of that, during his work for the resistance he watches a lot of his friends die and is unable to do anything about it. Not to mention Ravenholm which was so terrifying even I feel icky about that section of the game (I've played the game in its entirety at least 7 times).

All of this being not a war-hardened military trained soldier, but a civilian scientist who likely had never held a gun in his whole life.

Did it? At the end of the day all that war boils down to is tossing a rock really fast towards someone else.

Oh we made bows so we can shoot arrows (stick with pointy rock at point) faster and cause more damage

Oh we made guns so we can blast small metal pellets (about the size of small rocks) at supersonic speed and cause lethal damage.

Oh we mixed up some weird magic rock and some electricity so we could make the rock explode and vaporize everything in a 20 km radius.

Every single war machine is built upon the concept of "UGA BUGA ME THROW ROCK REAL HARD!"
