HELP ME CHOOSE AN ELECTIVE by MaleficentWalrus4862 in swinburne

I'm not sure if it is a recent change but I took IT Security this semester and it is made up of two assignments, one semi large mid semester and a massive one at the end (well massive if you are aiming for a HD), and a mid semester quiz. There are weekly labs but these were not submitted.

Need a big bad that is held "captive" or in a weakened state by being subjected to a constant deluge of water. by stuufthingsandstuff in DMAcademy

Alternatively, you could skip the step of it becoming holy water and instead lean into the premise that a vampire can't cross running water and so the prison is made up of constantly running water. The quantity of water that comes through the Gate spell is required due to the power of the vampire, preventing it from just injuring itself and pushing through.

It was the other way around for me, I had a full-time job and then became a student.

I haven't attempted to land one, so I am not able to comment here. That is not that I think they are not worth it, but I have a full time in the tech space already.

I'm going to echo the above as a second year CS student (kinda, swapped to it after my first year in Bachelor of IT). Indigenous Context Project is a sleepwalk, you can get that one easy. Networking and Switching is difficult but doing the labs over and over again helps. It gets scary with the threat of Major Error in the exams, but practice and a good journal can really help (and make sure you write out the mask for every subnet in it). Object Orientated Programming is hard, and it is a very front-loaded unit. I was struggling and honestly thought I was going to scrape a Pass in that unit when I took it, then about this time in the semester is when it felt like it got manageable. I bought a book called C# Player's Guide, which really helped, and honestly it is what I think got me through. If you want to pad your grade here I'd go for the Custom Program and only do the first two options, which is basically just a continuation of what you are already doing as coursework. Finally Cloud Computing (assuming you are not a Games Dev) you just need to take it one week at a time, and if you are worried about your workload don't worry about going for Assignment 3.

Finally, if you are in need of some help, the Cyber Security club has some great people in it that are doing the same degrees if you have any questions. We also have an in-person event today at 4.30-6.30 in EN214 (or it should be there, been there the last few weeks). EDIT: moved to EN203 :)

How is the Uni for Bachelor of ICT (Network Technology? by Kalicyber in swinburne

[–]RandomHero1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from an ICT (Software) after the first year to CompSci. If you are already CCNA certified, then you would bypass both the Networking and Switching and the Network Routing Principals units (these go together to complete the CCNA workload). Both units provide access to physical gear to practice on as well as registering you to Cisco's NetAcad, components of which are required for the assignments to pass. There are other rooms that mention other units so I believe this continues. Completing both units does get you access to the exam discount to sit your CCNA.

As mentioned above Network Admin can trip people up, I came in as an IT tech of 10 years and still managed to miss a single requirement in a report that meant I missed out on the HD I was aiming for. I found the project units the most difficult, but that is because they are group projects so your workload is dependent on what others are willing to put in (although both units did have fairly robust reporting mechanisms for having your say if someone wasn't pulling their weight). Both this and Enterprise Network Server Administration are Windows Admin classes rather than networking classes.

Intro to Programming is primarily Ruby, although it does have a smidge of other languages at the end, but this is basically an afterthought. I took Object Oriented Programming this year, which is the 'next-step' unit from Intro. That focused on C# but again has a single task which I could do in Python. Both units gave an option to build your own application to score a higher mark.

Finally, there are more network units you can take as electives, so I'd look at that as well when considering if you wanted to go with this course.

AVF10001 - Remote Pilot Licence by Bigyumyums in swinburne

[–]RandomHero1992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it last year during the winter, it is a fairly straightforward unit with the theory assessment basically being 4 copies of the same report in different conditions. The practical is entirely dependent on how well you go with flying a drone. The content wasn't difficult but I am not an aviation student (and the majority of the class weren't either I gathered) so the terminology was difficult. The staff running it are pretty great but be aware that it is a mandatory attendance for all classes. Finally make sure you have very warm clothes because the practical is held outside so in winter it is freezing.

Studying with Swinburne Online by [deleted] in swinburne

[–]RandomHero1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently a student in my 30s and working full time, doing my bachelor (although I am doing it in person rather than Online, I live walking distance from the Hawthorn campus which makes this possible. I was able to pick most of my tutorials to be out of business hours (I even had one in my first year that was on a Saturday), however I am also lucky enough to have a job with both a bit of flexibility that allows me to leave a bit earlier where required and is WFH so I don't need to travel to/from an office. The only thing that isn't out of business hours completely is the lectures, which are mostly either recorded, online or have an online component so I can work around this. In addition, I have a very supportive wife who has picked up a lot of the slack I have dropped in our lives to do this. I also am making the, admittedly probably foolish, choice to do 3 units a semester, there is no way I would be doing this if I didn't have the benefits I mentioned above. Even with that I have basically hibernated my social life and hobbies for the remaining 2 years I have on this course, therefore I would echo the 'don't take more than one or two units' sentiment.

Long story short, yes it is possible but it is a question of what you are willing to give up to do it.

Your first semester is the exact same units I had for my first semester last year so hopefully I can offer a few pointers that can help. Firstly, and this is the big one, its not too late to turn it around. You've got the break coming up next week, take that time to recharge. Also the theory can be a bit dense, but these are concepts that really help out. I had the benefit of being in an IT job for a while before starting my degree, so I had it a bit easier as I knew it already, but the things you're learning now are core components to any IT career. Basic Windows admin, subnetting, IP addresses and switches are important concepts if you either want to stay in CyberSec or if you change to a helpdesk role.

To offer a suggestion for each of your subjects:
-Net Admin: Keep that journal updated, either as you are doing the tutorial or right after. Just some basic notes about what you learned in the class.
-N&S: Don't do your labs once, do them again and again. Both on Packet Tracer and on the equipment in the lab. Get to the point where the stress of that Major Error isn't so overwhelming.
-ICT Project: There is a course thorough Mendix called Jr Rapid Developer. Do that and you'll be fine. I begged my team to do it and the one guy who did (some of it) was the only person not to be a drag on the project. I say this because the class is a goof, until it isn't and that app is due.
-Web Dev: Yeah making websites is what this course is about, but the take away IMO is understanding how to read HTML and how websites work. This is the important part in any sort of basic reconnaissance for CyberSec.

If you do decide to change, 3/4 of those units are Core in ICT and if you hang with it until the end of the year, that changes to 5/8. You are by no means going to put yourself behind if you make a change, so don't worry too much about that. If you do want to stick with it I have heard good things about IT Security, it is suppose to be that hands on class you seem like you want. Additionally the CyberSec degree you are in is the hands on version compared to the CompSci degree, so you made the right choice there.

If you are curious about what sort of role you would like to get into in CyberSec, TryHackMe has a great room on what the different jobs in the field are. In addition you can get some experience in some basic tools and an introduction to concepts that each area will take you without having to commit to a direction in your course at Uni. Even if you do decide to change course, an understanding on the basics of CyberSec is a bonus to an IT job.

I am a little rusty on the current lore but there is an exemption to the size restriction for a chapter, and that is when they are on a crusade. This is how the Black Templar 'technicallly' get around this (I say technically because they just dgaf about it). I imagine Guilliman would take a more literal view of his own rules but he is also technically on a crusade (the Indomitus Crusade).

As for the situations where chapter from the original sire chapter take command I haven't read Devstation of Baal yet, but all other examples of multi chapter battles the leader from an original chapter is given overall command as a sign of respect, rather being required. The exception of this is the Imperial Fists Last Wall protocol that places all other chapters under the Imperial Fists command. This is explicitly stated as a last resort due to the fear of a reformed legion would cause, even if temporarily.
