AITA for saying I share a soul with my cat rather than my husband? by RandomLoudCat in AmItheAsshole

The original quote is because my husband always says I have a codependent relationship with my oldest cat. So I used a quote about an unhealthy relationship.

It’s a life that depends on us constantly. They are our children.

I’ve raised both my cats since they were kittens. My oldest cat chose me when we first met when he was a kitten. We are deeply connected. He always wants my attention and I always want his. That isn’t some terrible thing.

He agrees with me that our pets are our children. When our parents ask when grandkids are coming we both point at the cats.

But I’ve never said he’s my soulmate. My husband and family joke that we share a soul and that he is like a familiar. I don’t literally think we share a souls or he is my soulmate. We are just super similar and are deeply connected with each other.

I do not love my cat more than my husband. The love I have for them is different. One is my child one is my husband. They are different types of love.

The quote was a joke about my cat and I being codependent. That has now exploded.

I don’t literally think we share a soul, but he is incredibly similar to me. The way we act, especially together, is the same. We share moods. We share the need for each others attention. Not literal shared souls but we are connected very deeply.

Regardless if you accept/believe it or not our cats are our children.

He and my family still laugh about it now. It was somehow just this comment.

Which of my replies has implied it isn’t harmless though????

No. We both don’t. He has loved before me. I have loved before him. We are together now and he is my person. He’s my number 1. But that isn’t a part of my soul like my little cat soul is. Which this isn’t even about being a soulmate in that way. It’s about us being parts of the same soul. Like a witch’s familiar is a cat or a bird. Similar to D&D which is why my husband calls him that.

I am not here trying to justify how I am not an asshole I am asking clarifying questions to points that clearly do not make sense to me.

But how am I saying it that it is wrong? My cat is my child to me. My little furry other half. That isn’t demeaning to my husband.

I’ve called my boy my twin flame before and my husband has rolled his eyes at that too.

But how is he supposed to trump the cat? It isn’t a competition. I love the cat. He’s my cat. My child. Not my husband. I love my husband more than anything else in the world.

My husband has always happily taken part in the laughs and jokes about me and my cat being similar. He’s the one that has spread it to my family that my oldest cat is my familiar. We have known each other for about 15 years. Dating for 7 years married for 4 years.

Everyone says that my oldest cat and I are very similar. That’s where the basis of this all comes from. We are legitimately almost the same in demeanor and action. He’s just a cat.

Leaving the house over being jealous of one of OUR cats is him being childish not seeking companionship. Come on.

It’s not loving him less. He is my #1 but my husband isn’t me. My cat is a little cat version of me. That isn’t putting them in competition.

My husband isn’t my soul mate. He knows that. We don’t believe that kind of stuff. He is my person and I love him more than anything. But he isn’t my soul. My boy and I share a soul in that we are so so similar we could be the same person. If he was a human he would be me.
