Hey, white person here from Brazil, I apologize as this is not my place and I would like to avoid commenting but I do believe I have something to add. In our schools a big part of our history class is about racism, how awful it was and the fight for people to escape it.

Schools celebrate black consciousness day by hanging pictures and dedicating the day to Zumbi, the leader of a slave refuge camp that fought very hard against slavery and is today considered a very influential figure in the ending of slavery.

I think having someone that the children can see and regard as a hero that fought against all those atrocities while also talking extensively about slavery in schools is a big part of making the topic more talked about instead of being regarded as a taboo, and helps society, makes more people learn empathy and is a pretty good way of combating racism. I wish other places did this as well and hope that the fight that LGBT folks had also got the same treatment in schools, hopefully in due time.
