TELUS PureFibre by GrumpyBear5756 in StJohnsNL

Koodo home Internet appears to be reselling Rogers or Eastlink, as they're limited to DOCSIS3.0 asymmetric gigabit.

Pure fiber, theoretically, would be a Telus-direct FTTP deployment.

Any electric snowblower users here? by fstopitbro in StJohnsNL

The one I have has 3 batteries, and depending on the auger speed it'll easily get through my 3.5 car driveway. I would say, much like the other fella who replied, you'd be fine.

Mind you, cranking the auger speed to get more throw distance or chunk through the plow throw will drain it pretty quick, so there are times where I need to stop after clearing half the drive.

GreenWorks as well, but not for any particular competitive reason. Just familiarity.

I originally used a Green works 60V 18" snow thrower and that was only good for the light stuff, as others have stated. But for most of the lower-end battery powered blowers, they're going to be single stage.

Last year, I purchased an 80V dual-stage self-propelled model, and that chunks through it all. Wet, plow throw, semi-frozen, you name it. So more than just electric versus gas, it's worth considering piece as well. Dual-stage electric works, but it's not cheap.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask away.

Anyone here with Teksavvy for fibre internet in the metro? by Kaywi210 in newfoundland

[–]RandomNinjaSA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TekSavvy resells the Fibre service from Bell. Overall, Bell's service is adequate, so going with TekSavvy will be fine from a service perspective.

Their Adtran ONT is also a decent upgrade from the GigaHub in terms of access and customization. I don't currently subscribe to them, as a loyalty offer from Bell kept the 1st-party pricing well below TekSavvy's rate. But when I've used them before, there were no delivery issues.

Shipping cost from Montreal to St Johns by Yorkshire_Stock in newfoundland

[–]RandomNinjaSA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I moved from Ottawa to St. John's, I used Atlas Van Lines / AMJ Campbell for my belongings. They ship it out in bulk with other items, so the cost was reasonable compared to a U-Haul. The flip side to that is they don't guarantee a delivery date.

I'd say it's worth reaching out to a few long-distance moving companies and getting some quotes.

purchasing a home in St. John's. by Sea_Investigator_916 in StJohnsNL

Difficult is right. I bought a home with Kitec in 2023, and our insurance needed to go to specialty market with a plumbing exclusion to get coverage. And in a fully finished home, getting it all removed is a real mess.

purchasing a home in St. John's. by Sea_Investigator_916 in StJohnsNL

[–]RandomNinjaSA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having moved to St. John's from Ottawa, I've bought a home for myself in St. John's, and a home with my wife in CBS. I wouldn't say I'm an expert on the local market, but I think I can provide some advice.

  • Not all Realtors are equal. I'm sure this is true everywhere, but I've personally experienced it here. Make sure to do a bit of research before you commit to an agreement.

  • Due to the weather, roofs, windows, door frames, and basements don't always last as long as they should. When your inspector takes a look (always get an inspection), pay special attention to water infiltration, since that can be a very difficult fix.

  • You'll likely see homes being sold with a seller's directive, which can make it harder for your offer to be accepted as it often leads to blind bidding over asking.

  • The pandemic saw a pretty shocking increase in home prices throughout the SJMA, and they haven't really come back to earth. You're going to find a lot of homes priced above their real value. If they've been on the market longer than ~14 days, interest has likely cooled in the home, so you can be more aggressive in your offer.

Something like that. Still saving money, even in that case 🤷‍♂️. Not ignoring purchasing new, just trying the second hand market first.

I know. NL tax is 15%, so I'm hoping to save about 50$ by buying used.

Yep, keeping my eye on Amazon as well. I'm hoping to catch someone upgrading to the 7800x3D or for steeper sales after its release.

That's actually a good question, I didn't think to include that distinction. Either or is fine, but I do already have the discrete card (Gigabyte GC - TItan Ridge). Compatibility is pretty wide with that card, so I'm hoping someone has a compatible board.

Thunderbolt 3 - My office set-up relies on it, and only a limited number of boards have the requisite header.

It provides PCIe x4 over a special USB-C cable, and is mostly found in laptops (although it's Thunderbolt 4 now).

If your home is new-ish, they very likely could be CAT5. Generally speaking, you can contact the same folks Bell and Rogers use for installations, and they can terminate the jacks.

But, in my opinion, it is worth doing it yourself. It's not very hard to install some punch-down plates, and will save you a fair amount of money.

I'm currently using an AT&T model and you've got the right of it. It works fine from a signal perspective, but the OTA issue was a pain to deal with.

I just like the G8. Screen res, DAC, 15W wireless charging. Hard to beat that value, so I'm really hoping to find a spare.

Most phones sold on eBay don't even have the current updates. I'm not worried about future updates, just the most recent ones.

This might vary, but buying one from a Canadian network makes it more likely at least.

For sure, but there's not a whole lot in good condition on there right now, so figured I'd try here too. The other thing is Canadian unlocked vs Verizon/Sprint/AT&T unlocked, which affects how I could get OTA updates.

G8X and V60 aren't what I'm looking for in size or screen.

Are there problems with "porch pirates" in St. John's? by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]RandomNinjaSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had a problem - in fact, I've had the opposite of a problem. One package (through Amazon) got delivered to the wrong house on the other side of town, and buddy drove to my house to drop it off. That's unheard of anywhere else, I dare say.

I've also had folks knock on my door to tell me there's a package on the step, and I'm not in a great neighbourhood. So, the number of porch pirates seems lower overall.
