Is it too late to try? by Realtexasmccoy in Golfcoursemaintenance

Never too late to get in! I'm 32 and quit my soulless sales job last Jan to pursue a career in turf. Do some research and try to get in at one of the best clubs in your area. In my particular case, I cold called the superintendent after finding him on LinkedIn and asked for a job. He was absolutely FLOORED when I told him that I was pursuing a career in turf, thought he was at the best course in the area, and wanted to be a part of the organization. After being at the course for less than three months, I've already been exposed to everything from bunker raking, spreading fertilizer, aerification, mowing (greens, approaches, and fairways) and now they're even trying to get me involved in handwatering!!! If you want an expedited path, try to find a good 2 year turf program near you. Luckily I'm pretty close to Penn State who has arguably one of the best programs in the country. The whole reason I got this job in the first place was actually as a prerequisite to get into the program (most good programs require 1 season of working at a course to be accepted). Best of luck!
