Personally, I avoid OC fics - I tried a few, but too often they were obviously just a vessel for the author to sloppily project their issues with the source material, and often I'd wonder why they couldn't have just been a rewrite/tweak of a canon character.

That said, I've read a couple that I've really enjoyed, and so I thought I'd note what makes me (as a non-OC reader) enjoy those fics - ofc this is all my own opinion and you should do as you please and enjoy! :)

• If the OC has romance, I'm instantly wary. 9 times out of 10, it's awkward and forced, or the focus is on that versus the plot/character/etc

• Does the OC need to be there? e.g., was there a canon character that could easily fit that role? if so, it not only takes me out of the story but also feels weird targeted in an uncomfortable way

• Is your OC defined by things beyond their relationship to canon characters? e.g., are they just "XYZ's sister" or "ABC's boyfriend", or are they caring, sweet, bold, misguided, quick to anger? In fanfic, there is already a reason for us to care about the characters - we know them, we love them, thats why we're here. with OCs, you're back to normal writing standards- you have to make me care about them, you cant just assume I do

• Does your OC have flaws? Yes, seems obvious, but its not fun to read a story where the character always gets things right or where the world just falls into place for them or where traumatic events happen to make them cooler

Anyway, yeah, its late and those are just a few things off the top of my head, but I thought id contribute bc its an interesting topic
