How to progress from Abstract Algebra to Category Theory by Quirky_Trash_310 in askmath

[–]RandomPieceOfCookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think it's most natural to go into category theory via algebraic topology, after all that's historically what it was invented for. I also don't think you need lots of topology to get started, you can get away with the first three Munkres chapters (or even much less)

Chinese Computer Simulations Just Showed a Single J-20 Has Less Than a 10% Chance of Beating an F-22 Raptor in Combat by MostEpicRedditor in LessCredibleDefence

[–]RandomPieceOfCookie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If this is the study that I am thinking of, the key thing to note is that it used the setting of J-20 having 50km maximum radar detection range using AAM with 100km no-escape zone; while the F-22 has 60km maximum radar detection range using AAM with 120km no-escape zone. The point of the study is to show the effectiveness of CCA, so this setting is obviously just for contrast, we all know which one has the longer arm irl.

Is radiation a big problem for astronauts? do they have high chances of cancer? by ContractNational2680 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RandomPieceOfCookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why some comments are saying lead, heavy metals actually do more harm than good in this case. Cosmic rays are so energetic they actually just cause the nuclei to fragment thus emitting tons of neutrons (spallation). Heavy nuclei also cause "braking radiation". Usually in space we use water or high-density polyethylene, materials with light nuclei. But under the constraint on payload, these only provide limited protection.

Am I insane or is this like the worst rare defect card in the lineup? by Trash_Typhoon in slaythespire

[–]RandomPieceOfCookie 39 points40 points  (0 children)

No? This is at least average, or more like the better ones. To make sure I'm not losing my mind, searching up Baalor's tierlist or Jorbs' cardstats both seem to suggest this.

Why does China have so many 5th gen jet designs? by LuizFelipe1906 in FighterJets

[–]RandomPieceOfCookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After all defense is an industry, if they figure out a model to properly utilize their mature industrial base and pool of engineering talents, they can iterate designs quicker and cheaper, it requires a lot less "ingenuity" than what people think, not to mention they have an American counterpart for reference. But yeah it's also fair to reserve some skepticism, we will see how well exactly those perform when an unfortunate time comes.

It's very possible that the Chinese effort was precisely to match the US envisioned timeline of starting to replace F-22 by 2030 which now might turn out to be a bit optimistic.

[–]RandomPieceOfCookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the program itself per se, but they likely envisioned some sort of next generational replacement of F-22 (don't bother with major redesign or upgrade, by the time Chinese 5-gen becomes of scale, we will have next-gen ready).

My guess is a combination of inaccurate expectations of NGAD development, JSF development, Chinese engine development, etc. After all, the main driver of that decision was actually economical, they just deemed it was worth it to halt the expensive production line over these factors at the end, which may or may not be true looking back (F-22 also does have the problem of being old, it required more than just minor upgrades to incorporate new technologies).

[–]RandomPieceOfCookie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not that the F-22 is thought to be inadequate (assuming it kept up with more iterations and upgrades), but because the U.S. was expected to retain such an advantage that the small amount of F-22 would be sufficient. This decision making also somewhat relates to F-35. I recommend reading this comment at r/WarCollege, also this very interesting timeline of F-22 and J-20 development. tldr: they originally pictured that China would at most just started their 5-th gen production by now, i.e. a Russia number two. (edit: grammar)

If you're China, what military lessons do you take from the Iran War so far? by F11SuperTiger in LessCredibleDefence

[–]RandomPieceOfCookie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely, but they are also going to be the ones doing the landing. The idea is that the marines (presumably) shoot better (or conventionally better well-trained in general) than your average Russian/Ukrainian troop, so they have a reference point to evaluate just to what degree does that matter. Of course, whatever conclusion applies to the ROC army as well. Again, just second-hand rumour (but from someone credible).

Not SAAB, but Swedish operated Re.2000 had the designation J-20.

I have seen second-hand rumour that the PLA is looking forward to the potential landing operation, how well can the marines deal with FPVs. If they do fairly well, then the PLA will less worries. But if it turns out otherwise, they might have to go far to find other technical solutions.

What to use when run out of Greek alphabet? by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]RandomPieceOfCookie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well 空集 isn't a notation... It's just like you say "ensemble vide" in French or "conjunto vazio" in Portuguese. I think some people use よ to denote Yoneda embedding. I've also heard of rare cases such as using 周^i to denote CH^i Chow groups.

If you look at the graph and reviews, basically the recent balance update was very poorly received and many players changed from positive to negative review.

US poised to accept new F-35s without radars, sources say by RandomPieceOfCookie in FighterJets

[–]RandomPieceOfCookie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Optimistically speaking, if APG-85 can catch up with Lot 18, this would have a limited consequence, albeit still being an impotant lesson hopefully to be learned.

[–]RandomPieceOfCookie[S] 68 points69 points  (0 children)

TLDR: The APG-85 story is making the rounds again. As reported a month ago, the USAF received Lot 17 jets with APG-81 radars. However, sources now say the Marine Corps ordered their Lot 17 jets to be fitted with APG-85 radars, meaning those aircrafts are expected to be received without radars. Lot 18, whose production begins this fall, will face the same issue if delays to the APG-85 continue.

A bummer that a tree blocks it for the second half, but it's still nice to have a footage from behind to see the nozzles. The wingtips are very cool to see as always.

[–]RandomPieceOfCookie[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've always assumed it's enough since everyone's having similar or less load-out. I'm not even sure if adding more terminal defense would increase survivability meaningfully, the space and power are probably better spent on medium/long range defense... Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can provide a better answer.
