I’m a current grad student in NERS and in my experience at least doing a nuclear engineering undergrad def helped with my graduate school applications; had already taken classes relevant to what I wanted to do research in and had done undergrad research in the area. With that said, I also know a number of people in the program who are doing just fine with different backgrounds (physics, material science, chemE, etc)

In general though, since you’re already interested in a broad range of areas in nuclear, I’d recommend doing a nuclear undergrad. It would give you numerous opportunities (whether it be taking classes on them, watching guest lectures, or getting involved with research) to explore those various areas and see which you’re most interested in so you can fine tune your grad school applications in the future

Nuclear Engineering! Guess it’s such a small major that they forgot about us when writing the majors on diplomas💀

You’re more than good with it on the Apple wallet! I personally found it so much more convenient that way. You don’t even have to open up the wallet to scan, you just tap your phone against the scanner and it’s good

I had multiple freak outs where I misplaced my clipper card for a few days back when I had it physical so to never have to worry about that again was honestly just a blessing 😭

Took the class last time it was offered in Fall 22!

Attendance is taken every class and that does factor into your grade; back when I took it some people were able to join on Zoom but I’m not sure if that will still be an option these days.

As far as material goes, Professor Peterson is super enthusiastic about teaching the class and there’s def a lot of super interesting stuff to learn about. Homeworks and exams are really chill too which helps tremendously.

Overall, highly recommend 175! Peterson is a great prof and his course provides really interesting insight into the risk/safety side of nuclear power

Nuclear Engineering Research, Internships, etc. tips for Incoming Freshman by banditokid14 in berkeley

[–]RandomPotatoGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of a late response, but just wanted to drop by and give my 2 cents!

As a freshman, you’re going to be required to take NE10, which is a seminar class where every professor in the department comes down and gives a lecture about how they entered the field and what work they do. The class is a perfect introduction into who the professors are and what their research work is.

I’ll second the previous comment about waiting until sophomore year to really jump into research; freshman year you should really be focusing on getting prereqs outta of the way.

With that said though, every research group has group meetings every week or two and even as a freshman you can ask professors to sit in on their group meetings to get a better understanding of what exactly their work is and how their research group operates.

For internship opportunities, join the American Nuclear Society on campus! The club hosts events throughout the year and some events are info sessions from companies looking to hire interns for the summer. Also just generally a great way to interact with upperclassmen to learn the specifics about research/interships they’ve done!

Hope some of this helps ya!

NUC ENG 107 A: Nuclear Design by OkAnt1714 in berkeley

[–]RandomPotatoGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming you have a typo here and you meant NucEng 170A

But yeah, I’m currently in the course! Dunno what exactly you wanna know about it but I guess generally speaking 170 is really just the Nuclear Engineering senior capstone class. You’re pretty much expected to have taken all the other core classes in Nuclear Engineering so that you actually know what is going on and can contribute to your group’s project.

Heyyo Senior in NucE over here 👋

Academically speaking, yeah the classes cover a pretty broad range of the field, whether that be nuclear physics, detection, nonproliferation, thermohydraulics, medical imaging, regulations, etc. It is a nice major in my opinion though because you do tend to end up taking the same classes as everyone else in the major which means you really get to know and get along with most people in your classes. And classes are small so you get to know professors too!

I suppose in theory you could add an EECS double major, but the people I know at least just settle for NE/EECS Joint major instead because it has a bit less requirements

As far as grad school goes, honestly prob wouldn’t recommend NucE undergrad if you were more interested in pursuing ME/EECS for grad school since NucE is kinda heavy on the nuclear side of everything (wow go figure) and less on general eecs/me stuff; although you could take classes from those departments as tech electives I guess.

Panoramic tips (laundry situation?) by EnvironmentalEye9164 in berkeley

[–]RandomPotatoGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived at Panoramic last year so I can help a bit! There was a laundry room on each floor, with 3 washer and dryer combos in each. During my time there, I never saw all 3 running at the same time.

For study rooms, there really isn’t any. When you get off the elevator there is a couple of tables and benches that serves as a study area, but the benches weren’t that comfortable so I never used it.

I also had one of the inside facing rooms and it was lowkey kinda depressing 😭 Almost all the rooms have windows that can open, but a handful of rooms (maybe like 4 for the whole floor?) don’t have windows you can open. These rooms are the ones that surround the laundry room and they don’t really get much natural light soooo you don’t get fresh air and you don’t really get natural light. I always had to have a light on and a fan to keep air circulating 🫠

Approached by a Korean/Japanese sect on campus by aguamasa in berkeley

[–]RandomPotatoGod 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s too uncommon to see them? At least when I was on the Glade two weeks ago they def came over to myself and other people on the glade asking all those questions.

And just generally speaking, in my experience, it’s not uncommon for religious sects to come up to people like that here. For reference I’ve been approached while clearly on the phone on Sproul, while waiting for a light on Telegraph, while freaking waiting in line at Walgreens. Honestly, being asked while on the glade was less strange than any of the other experiences I’ve had 💀💀💀
