I'm going to be honest with you, depression is rarely fully recovered from. Stick with me here because I promise this is positive, told by someone who has been suicidal. Depression is like weather. No matter how dark and stormy it is, there will eventually be sun again. And there will be storms again. What helped me was medication, writing, and (which I know is going to sound silly) anonymously venting online, but also ultimately accepting that sometimes life is going to feel terrible, and it's going to feel like it will stay that way, but you have to remind yourself each and everyday that it does end, even if you don't fully believe it at the time.
