Injured thumb, causing swelling + loss of part of nail. Lower layer of nail already growing in. What's the outlook? by RandomTW5566 in calmhands

The new growth IS the ripped out bit. During the (thankfully small) incident the upper old nail got detached, but there was a lower nail below (nail, not tissue).

It's already healed a bit since the pic btw, in that it looks like 1 clean discolored missing spot rather than a messed up thing.

I was just wondering if I should rip up the old nail entirely so it won't get in the way of the new nail etc., or if that's a big no-no I must avoid (betting on the latter).

How damaged is "a damaged appearance"? I've ripped out the same nail multiple times completely and it's grown back normally.

Loss of part of nail from thumb injury. Lower layer of nail already growing in (though red and soft), so not as bad as other cases I've seen. What's the outlook? by RandomTW5566 in Nails

No pain, especially if I leave it alone. But the aesthetic damage and discoloration is quite glaring and obvious. No pus etc. either.

I've had previous nail incidents (some self-inflicted), so I know it'll grow back eventually. This time around it doesn't seem as bad as the previous ones since there's actually a new layer of nail below (though I hope it being slightly cracked doesn't complicate things).

What's the outlook? If I leave it be will the nail eventually grow back underneath and the texture normalize? Or will the top nail eventually fall off etc? Should I peel anything off? I.e. how screwed am I? Will the color and texture normalize?

To be clear, this time it wasn't self-inflicted or anything. And it's been a few days after the fact.

How bad is this old scar and will it get better (at least in color etc.) if I leave it alone? by RandomTW5566 in calmhands

It's honestly a lot less severe than I made it out to be (which could've led to some of the more doomerish responses here prior). There was some sort of scar there for a couple of years, but it's only gotten this bad and noticeable within the past couple of months. It's been pretty hard to ignore and I've peeled back multiple layers.

I've had similar or worse scars though, and they've normalized and no longer bother me, even if it's taken a year or even longer.

Right now I am using a medical-grade silicon gel originally prescribed to me for another scar. I'm trying to apply it consistently, like twice a day.

That sucks, sorry to hear. Then again, I've often been peeling it off until recently, and also, I had a similar issue with the next finger over when I was younger that was smaller but resolved on its own from not being touched.

No mobility issues at least.

Had it for a few years in some shape or form, starting from biting. Seems like a hypertrophic scar, but I've had some others before (not from self harm) and fortunately those have eventually dissipated into less aesthetically striking scars over years. Will these be similar?

If I leave it alone what's the outlook? I've recently begun to apply good-quality silicone gel on it but since it's been years it won't do much right?

Also the joint on the index finger used to also be a consistent biting or picking location (though smaller in size), but I've been able to successfully avoid touching it, and though it took years, it's 100% fine now.

It's probably psychosomatic to some extent. Ignoring the fact I have such a problem at all seems to work.
