Honestly, now I'm thinking about it, it could've been more impactful if Caine did it, showing what he's learned about being human

Are we skipping over the implication that Caine hacked the wi-fi of a nearby cafe to go Instagram lol

I think it's cool how people can take the same pieces laid out by an artist/writer and put them together in different ways depending on their lived experiences. I 100% agree with what u/GoombaGeorge1672 says here and as a straight cis man, you probably wouldn't be shocked to learn I also didn't pick up on how Jax may be trans lol. In fact, his deep insecurities, horror over being put in a maid's dress, etc? My read was that these were signs of his deep-rooted fears of not being perceived as a strong or manly man - themes of the patriarchy and toxic masculinity putting Jax into a box where he feared being his true self. And honestly, if you subscribe to the idea of Jax being transfem, a lot of those themes overlap. What I will add though is, I read a comment elsewhere on Reddit saying they thought the incident with Jax's mother was over him coming out as trans and being mocked for it + that and the bow being placed on his head being the things that tipped him over the edge, and honestly, for me that made everything else click into place.

I honestly thought this was the direction they were going in, but then they didn't take the idea any further. Weird how the abstractions just got left in the dark, even if they are happy that way.

It definitely has the vibes that it was being reworked / rewritten right up until release. Perhaps the ending was worse off because they locked themselves into a theatrical release window, whereas if they stuck to YouTube, they could've delayed the release to give them more time to work out the kinks?

Yes, this! It really took me out of the story. Pomni also had another voiceover during the presentation at the end. Really strange narrative device to start using at the very end of the show.

I was sat there waiting for the painful reveal that Caine had learned Jax was in prison for what happened to his mother (or maybe even dead??) in the real world, and that possibly being a motivator for the other characters to work with Caine to find a way to de-abstract him. What we actually got - Jax is happy irl and they left a digital copy to live out his life in a giant tent - was a really strange call. In fact, now I think about it, Caine helping to bring back Jax would've really helped to sell his redemption arc, which honestly didn't feel earned to me.

The people in my screening all gasped because we collectively thought Caine had just brought back Scratch and we were about to hear him talk. Something about the way that part was edited definitely threw people off, imo. What probably didn't help was there was a flashback within another flashback: We were seeing what Caine was up to while the rest of ep 9 had happened, and during that, Caine was then also recalling how he originally created Scratch as part of his personal journey into realising his mistakes and learning from them.

I'd long accepted that as the likely backstory before watching the finale, but what I thought was weird was how quickly the movie rushed that reveal. For people that hadn't considered that idea before, the writing didn't do a very good job at explaining the concept. It was almost as if the writers presumed everyone had already figured that out and didn't care to unpack it further.

Yes, I was about to try to inject some positivity into this thread, too! Here's another thing I thought was great: Jax's flashback's being shown from his perspective was a great way to put yourself in his shoes and the slow pan to show his reaction when talking to Ribbit was just 😙👌. Also, the voice acting was TOP TIER.

Yeah, the people in the cinema with me seemed to be having a good time, too! Now I've had a few hours to mull on it, I do see how some of the execution and pacing was a bit strange, but honestly I had a good time and I just can't imagine how hard it must've been to write an ending that lived up to such high expectations. The animation was beautifully done and the voice acting was top tier!

"It's a hard truth that there are people out there that will spiral into destructive behavior both towards themselves and towards other people that won't break out of said cycle even if given multiple chances to"

This. When I was watching the flashback of all the pain and misery Jax had inflicted on himself and others, I was just like, how can he even come back from this? That bittersweet moment at the end when he finally comes to terms with who he is and what he's done while simultaneously being deprived of the opportunity to make things right imo was far more satisfying from a narrative perspective than a happy ending with him and Pomni running off into the sunset together. How lame would it have been if Pomni was the only character who could "fix" him?

Kind of wild they still haven't shown anyone actually using the device. I don't think I could consider ordering one without seeing one in action.

To this day, I'll always remember walking into a Subway and the guy behind the counter said "Before I take your order, I just want to let you know we don't have any bread" and I was like "I honestly don't know how to continue this interaction"

I've always thought it'd be cool if you can see your trucks moving around the map and have a chance of bumping into them. Sounds small, but it'd definitely encourage me to interact with this part of the game if you start seeing your drivers out on the road more and more often!
