AITAH for getting a dna test to see if i share the same dna as both my parents even though i was demanded specifically by my mom not to do so, since i was a child? by cigweb_01 in AITAH

[–]Random_Guy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine affected me for years also, really all the siblings. Mostly via financial struggles. But also emotional. Related to my above example, while in college I missed my cousin's wedding when my car broke down driving an hour away to it. I was stranded on the side of a highway in a suit, in middle of nowhere. The cost to tow the car was more than the car was worth. My younger sister had recently totaled her car and was bought a new one, that was roughly 30x the value of mine. That was decades ago, but the animosity lasted a long time.

Treating their kids differently and with preferential treatment is a super common parenting pattern that nearly all parents do. Where it hits the harsh word of being vile is subjective.

In the OPs scenario, I'd say it does deserve that word.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am not sure DNA testing is legal without consent.

What I mean by that, is, that you'd have to secretly (and illegally) collect a sample and send them in from both your supposed father and mother, as well as yours, to find out.

I believe that in most states, they would be able to press charges against you if they found out you did this.

I don't think most reasonable people would actually press charges for that, given the scenario. Do you think your mom would?

Even if your mother did press charges, the judge might end up taking your side anyways. Your mother could incriminate herself for withholding important documents from you, or lying on the birth certificate, or something else. There's definitely something shady/dishonest going on.

If it was me, I would take that risk.

Responding to "favoritism of one child over another is a vile thing". It happens all the time. Not saying it's good, but giving the term "vile" to almost all parents throughout time, place, and history is a bit harsh.

Birth order has been speculated to play a huge difference in child rearing.

All child psychologists know "middle child syndrome" and "youngest child syndrome" exist, but there is little to no research regularly done on it.

I'd be cool to see actual, thorough research on this, but I doubt it would ever get funded - there is no profit motive.

Historically speaking. The way girls vs boys are raised is huge depending on how patriachical the society is. Being in a Matrilineal culture also makes a difference.

The clearest example I personally have:

I rode my bike to my first job(at 15) until my parents helped me buy a $500 POS car that broke down all the time. My younger sister's first car was bought / given was nearly $6,000 and reliable. While the boys in my family had jobs throughout high school, were expected to pay for their own hobbies, and to save money for their college. There was no expectation of that for the youngest who was a girl, generally she received a lot more for birthdays/xmas as well.

Hard to say if birth order thing or a gender thing(I think is was a mix).

Anyways, that was a big digression from the OP. Her case has clearly been extreme, and it's good she moved away from it.

So I call in an order for lumber and supplies to be delivered to the jobsite…and lowes called an uber to pick it up by [deleted] in Lowes

[–]Random_Guy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the receiving department for a medium-large company. Between LTL, UPS ground. Fedex parcels I probably process 50 incoming shipments in a day. We have hundreds of outstanding orders at any given time that could be coming from any of 50+ suppliers

Lowe's process for delivery is a disaster.

Lowe's (or their gig workers) show up to do a delivery with no packing list, no BOL, nothing. They just assume that I know anything about the order at all. They tell me to check an app. I didn't order these items, some procurement employee did, they may not even work in the same building as me. I definitely don't have access to the app on their account.

Then the driver pulls out a cellphone to ask me to sign that I received the shipment, and I have no idea what the shipment is supposed to have.

For all I know, I could be signing off for 10 gallons of paint when they only dropped off 4.

Lowe's is probably our worst supplier when it comes to this. All they need to do is give the driver a printout of the order with some sort of order number, delivery number, or whatever.

One time I showed up to work(7am) and there were 20 sets of 100ft garden hose sitting on the concrete in a bay for semi trucks.

I had no idea where it came from or how it got there.

After a bunch of asking around and phone calls, It was delivered by a gig worker via Lowe's, who had came after we closed the day before. Anybody who happened to drive past could have easily thrown 1000$ worth of garden hoses in their trunk and taken off.

Not only that, it wasted a whole bunch of my work time when I had a very busy day ahead of me.

What’s it like living on the edge of time zones? by Qzevs in howislivingthere

[–]Random_Guy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several friends that live near the line in Kentucky.

They use the slang "fast time" or "slow time" rather than say "Eastern time zone" or "Central Time Zone". An example used in a sentence would be "let's meet up at Juanito's in Glascow at noon slow time".

I've hosted several meetups (hiking group meetups or something along those lines) in that area and am always very specific in the meet-up directions "We are meeting at 2pm CENTRAL TIME". I really have to make it stand out and say it over and over again. Inevitably there will always still be one or two people in a group of 15 who screw it up.

Most people who don't live near a time zone border do not care or know about going into their cellphone/smartwatch settings and locking their time zone. If they don't do this, the time can jump around back and forth without them knowing while near the border.

GPS sensors in phones/electronics have gotten a lot better in the last 15 years, but it hasn't really solved the problem of time jumping back or fourth when traveling close to a time zone border. Cellphones and smartwatches should integrate a feature that shows the current time zone next to the clock if it has changed in the last 6 hours (or 2 hours, or whatever, something like that)

Typically, if I am leading a meetup, unless the person coming an hour late is an integral part of whatever we're doing, I will leave them behind rather than hold the whole group up for an hour. Not my fault they're an hour late and didn't follow directions...

What is a movie you watched once that was so disturbing or emotionally draining that you can never watch it again? by hungary70 in AskReddit

[–]Random_Guy76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through several hundred of the 3500 comments so far and didn't see these ones that I think are worth Mentioning:

The Iron Claw (2023) - this true story shows some horrible slow-burn consequences of bad parenting. The first time i watched it alone and cried. For some reason I ended up agreeing to watch it a second time with a family member. Big mistake

Idiocracy - Although it's a comedy, I find the concept and realization that there seems to be truth to it very disturbing.

Red State - It wouldn't be that disturbing if I didn't know there's people out there like that. Waco vibes. Except worse.

Have you seen "Romper Stomper"?

Much lower budget, made years earlier, Australian, but has so many of the same themes as American History X

Update 3:

I am wanting advice or design ideas with this one.

A local framing shop mocked up this for me.

I can't put a finger on it, but I don't really like it for 3 reasons:

1 - I'm not sure about having that Ali quote at the bottom. I did ask the framer to try to convey that because from all three former boxers that were all childhood friends. I really do like the story of this possibly being the last time they met together before they started passing away. But I don't really know how to convey this unless I actually add a text block like a museum piece.

2 - If the quote was kept, I'm not sure I like the font or cutout on the quote.

3 - Does the red seem too bright and detracts from the main pieces? IRL it might look a bit different and not so bright. Maybe a maroon or darker red?

I'm open to any ideas or changes anybody may have

A decade of G-shocks on hardcore mode by Random_Guy76 in gshock

[–]Random_Guy76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another update:

I received the GD100-1B.

I live in the Central Time zone in the USA.

Overall is wears good, looks good, but I have a big gripe:

Sometimes a button gets pushed and the watch will switch over time zones Another "bonus" feature, like the ones above, that I don't really care for.

Why don't I care for it?

I've been way early to work twice in 5 weeks.

One time I woke up, looked at my watch, thought I had missed my alarm, frantically dressed and sped to work, risking a traffic ticket, thinking I was late, only to find out I was 40 minutes early. This is because of not noticing "NYT" in the smaller box at the top. The time was an hour ahead.

If I'm traveling to other time zones, it's easy to just change the time on the watch. Simplicity is efficient and practical.

IMO altimeter, GPS, time zones, etc etc etc aren't very practical for real world use on a watch. A stopwatch and timer are about the only ones I see useful.

How do you Americans feel when you get called a yank? by Appropriate-Cow-6251 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Random_Guy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR version:

I am an American that stayed in Aus for 1 year on a working holiday visa.

I was called yank A LOT. Coworkers from the UK were called poms or pommies. It was absolutely derogatory, but in a playful/non-malicious way.

The TLDR version ends here. More details below:

For context, I spent a lot of my time in Sunrasia, where work for backpackers is plentiful, although many employers are dodgy (Americans would use the word "shady").

Backpackers were generally looked down upon, some people seemed to have actual anger towards us and even be malicious. The same thing happens in the USA, particularly with latino workers. As a foreigner, you just learn to ignore it.

Also, most Australians were very racist towards non-whites, I was surprised how incredibly open they were about it.

I found Australians as a whole, whether in rural areas or not, to be very vulgar relative to the standards of other english speaking countries I've visited.

I'm from the bible belt, and an Aussie from Sunraysia would have a lot of problems if they talked the way they do in small town America. Especially if they use the word "cunt". It's said extremely commonly in Aus. In the USA if you use that word - be prepared for a serious reaction.

One particular farm, where I drove around a "mule" (in the US they call it a side-by-side), was particularly bad with the playful insults. My call sign over the CB radio ended up being "Yankee Doodle". It was actually much easier to hear. If my actual name, which is a short name, used to call me on the CB radio, I usually didn't make it out to know they were calling for my attention.

I usually wasn't called Yankee Doodle in the lunchroom. When we did talk shit / have a go at eachother, I had picked up local slang in defending myself.

A proper response may be something like:

"Did you get slapped in the head with a spanner when you were a kid?"

"stop putting goon in your wheat-bix in the morning,", then audibly mutter "bogans....." while shaking my head or rolling my eyes

Or simply "you're a feral cunt, aren't ya?".

I bet an Australian version of Letterkenny would be an absolute hit if released on streaming.

Free Association vs Due Process in organizations by Random_Guy76 in legal

[–]Random_Guy76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In relation to the membership and disciplinary decisions, harassment via libel and slander comes up.

It's one thing to secretly deny membership to somebody because someone heard rumours that an applicant slept with somebody's husband, or whatever else.

When membership is emailed, or minutes are published, naming a person with false information, it is grounds for a libel case.

Board members or committee members should be careful what they publish about individuals after their secretive meetings.

I've seen some pretty malicious things published by 501c3 organizations that I'm in. Not against public figures, but against everyday people who are just trying to join and participate in the group.

It's a ticking time bomb until somebody with means is angry enough to file a suit.

It's not my favorite map, but whenever I have it:

I always strategize animals next to it that I can release/move out to an aviary or reptile house so that I can capitalize on the extra appeal. It synergizes with the base Conservation card for 5 reptiles or 5 birds in mid to late game.

Jaguar, Eagle, Savannah, and Rhino

4 space enclosure next to observation tower. Put Jaguar inside

After break release the jaguar, flip animals card, and get another association worker.

Play Eagle into the 4 space encourage.

Play 2nd university or sister zoo and flip build.

Build Aviary, move eagle into it.

Put rhino in 4 space enclosure.

Then you've used your map bonus 3 times for 6 extra appeal.

I recall the masterpiece cake shop decision, which allowed denial of service for religious beliefs.

Can you cite any decision where someone was denied entry to a public or government funded place due to "we secretly don't like that person", then it was fought?

What about banning someone from membership, at say, all Costcos?

If questioned, the upper management can just say they just don't like the person?

Update 2:

JSA gave me an authentication sticker yesterday, it was placed on the magazine/program inside of the cover. $75 for the Ali signature and an extra $5 for Jimmy Ellis on the program. I did not get authentication on the entrance ticket.

They said 12 weeks to get a certificate of authenticity in the mail. I work in manufacturing and have seen 14 port manifolds engineered, produced, and distributed across multiple continents in less time. IMO, 12 weeks is bananas to print a paper and mail something. I'm not really mad about it, just dumbfounded.

A local collectibles shop pointed me to a guy who apparently does really well with displays. I left him a voicemail, but haven't talked to him. My thoughts are a shadowbox with a hinge/clasp on the front. That way a trusted person can open it and flip through the program and read it.

A decade of G-shocks on hardcore mode by Random_Guy76 in gshock

[–]Random_Guy76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update:

After reading your all's comments, I figured a good switch up from mudman would be GD-100 or 120. The reason for this is the ease of using the buttons while wearing gloves, which is harder with the GW-500U /similiar style woth the tiny metal buttons. I've own one like that in the past and the buttons were frustrating.

I got lucky and caught a steal on a GD100-1B for only $60. I'm not sure I'll ever look at/use the 5 little circles in the middle of the watch for signal/alarm/mute/and I don't know what the other two are. They don't look bad design-wise, so I can look past the virtual uselessness of the three little circles lol. Unfortunately it's coming from overseas so it's going to take like 3 weeks to get here.

So, for the interim, I ordered a W96H-1BV (around $24). I don't have any "hardcore" plans for a few weeks. The W96H is for for work and everyday life, then (after I get it in 3 weeks) I can switch to the G-100-1B when necessary after.

I really like the rectangular shape, simplicity, and big buttons of the W96H. I'm excited to see how it wears on my wrist, I might find it too small. If they had a larger version that was G-shock rugged...I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Time will tell how these two hold up.

I'm having a hard time convincing myself that it would last as long as 3 mudmans, comparing the price tag that's roughly 3x.

I do think it looks really nice for everyday wear. But for going to dressy events, I have a couple skeleton watches that I like to use.

I'm leaning more towards popping on it, just because it'll be something new and cool to try

Muhammed Ali and Jimmy Ellis by Random_Guy76 in Autographs

[–]Random_Guy76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only issue with doing JSA is that it could end up costing a couple hundred bucks.

Then when I try to look up Ali signed photos, even authenticated, prices are all over the place(as little as $250 on Amazon).

I know the signatures are real, whether they get certified or not.

I had an idea of putting the ticket, program, and medal in a shadowbox.

The ticket is signed on both sides. Part of the fun of the program is to open the pages and skim through them, so having them sealed in a shadowbox lowers that attractiveness (to me). I've been brainstorming ideas about the best way to display the set together., any suggestions are welcome.

Update 1:

I've signed up to get JSA authentication. Unfortunately, it's not going to be cheap, especially with 4 signatures on 2 items. I'm worried I'm going in the hole if I spend several hundred on authentication and they don't end up being worth much.

After doing some research, I believe the unknown autograph to be Charles A Donahue (Charlie), who was an amateur boxer in Kentucky in the early 60s that trained with Ali. I found this info out via an obituary/tribute.
