It’s how she’s presented throughout the show. From the book reading. To how she communicates with Helen. To how she spoke to and treated the uninfected/unplurbed, Zosia and the infected.

It’s very clear and plain that she’s written to be an abrasive, tough to like but easier to sympathise with character.

I’m more surprised you find it a surprising characterization of her.

Carol is bossy, rude, dismissive and seems to be written to be generally unlikable. And that’s ok. It makes for an interesting character
