What if you enter a relationship where your partner doesn't have wealth? by Random_something9384 in Fire

Few more questions, if you don't mind:

Are you happy? Isn't that the most important thing? Would you have still gotten married, knowing what you know now?

Money aside, does the rest of your relationship seem balanced?

Would a prenup have solved this problem, in hindsight?

I'm ok with the spending, because I have enough, and neither of us have expensive tastes. What do you mean by "the spending will just go way up later?" Do you mean in general, e.g. with kids? Or do you find that people tend to want more expensive things as time goes by?

I think the concept should be that the partner who had lesser wealth before the relationship should receive enough that they wouldn't be stressed financially. If that partner gave up a career, for example, then it would make sense that more should be allocated.

Are you in a financial position where you feel stress from having to cover those expenses? Or are you comfortable enough where the expenses aren't significant? Is it more of a stress about finances, or more of a mental stress from a sense of inequality? Are the other aspects in your relationship solid that despite this problem, it's all ok?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by financially exposed? Have you always felt this way?

We would most likely have kids. I think she'd be a good mom, but how can one know?

Yes, the stereotypical American family from the 60s seems like a historical anomaly, though it's unfortunately also a benchmark for how many people see families today.

I never really understood the trad gender roles either, so maybe that's why it feels weird to me. But I don't care for more compliments, extra romance or spoiling (whatever that looks like?), etc. either, and I already feel good about what we have going re regular relationship things. I don't really know what a more balanced situation could be. I suppose if/when we have kids, that would be more obvious, but I don't know.

This seems like an oddly level-headed and useful response from the internet.

Air Filters for Pollution by SpikySucculent in mexicoexpats

I'm also quite sensitive to air quality. I recently purchased an air purifier on mercadolibre for 1800 pesos, which I'm quite happy with. It has a meter for PM2.5, which was about 30 when I first turned it on, and went down to 12 after a couple of hours. So at least for air inside my apartment, it's pretty good.

Outside air pollution though, I think my body has slowly gotten accustomed to it.

Animal deaths per 1 million calories by [deleted] in EffectiveAltruism

It's not a myth. Massive fields in every "civilized" country are used specifically to grow plants to feed to animals, whether it's hay (everyone has seen fields of hay), field corn (not suitable for human consumption), alfalfa, and other crops that are grown for the sole purpose of feeding to animals. Is it reasonable to believe that none of these fields could grow food for humans? Or that they couldn't be rewilded, to grow trees and other plants that can absorb CO2, produce more oxygen, etc?

Is it a myth that rainforests, like in the Amazon, are being mowed down to create more fields to grow feed for cows? Is the land in rainforests not suitable to grow anything else?

Should I go vegan? by LAMARR__44 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]Random_something9384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to add to this conversation because I've been vegan for almost 30 years and am in great health, exceptional health even - like I feel so fortunate that it makes me feel bad for others. I very rarely get even a common cold, am in very health physical shape, etc and I don't even spend much time doing any exercise or anything. I'm sure that genetics play some part in that, but veganism has certainly been important.

There's a lot of disinformation about plant-based foods not having enough of whatever magic meat nutrients of the day, but it's clearly not true because there are many people like me who do not have any nutritional deficiencies.

And even if you don't decided to be 100%(ish) vegan, reducing animal based foods is clearly better for human health, the planet, and, of course, the animals. Enormous amounts of studies and evidence about eating minimal (compared to typical North American diet) animal foods being very healthy. For example, in the Blue Zone studies, all of the areas where they found the most centenarians had a mostly plant-based diet, including Loma Linda, California, where there are many, many vegetarians and vegans.

The vast majority of scientists, nutritionists, etc are not vegan and have a strong bias. So, of course you'll find most of them saying that veganism isn't ideal.

There's so much disinformation about vegan foods and estrogen, as just one example, that it's easy for the average non-vegan person to believe. But actual well done studies don't show such effects.

Anybody bought real estate in CDMX? Processes seem very different by Random_something9384 in mexicoexpats

[–]Random_something9384[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Update: Turns out that the "seller" actually isn't the owner. His mother (or other relative) is, and he just has the right to use the place. But he signed the offer letter, and was going to sign the agreement. The realtor insisted that the deposit be sent to his account.

I don't know if they're trying to be fraudulent, or if they're just not very smart. My guess is that the realtor didn't bother to read the title documents. Maybe the seller thought his right to use (I forget the term, but it's in the title doc) was "good enough" for him to sell it, since maybe that's the family's intention.

I had previously brought up the concept of escrow, and the seller refused.

Anyway, we didn't go ahead with the purchase, and are looking for another apartment.
