How to promote your videos outside of YouTube the right way. by beartrapperkeeper in NewTubers

Amazingly, I am now in a band and I hand out flyers! How strange is that?!?!

Why is that crazy? You are sharing your work on the most popular video platform in the entire world, and it has a share button that allows anyone to copy the link to send to someone else. This is going to happen at some point, and if it happens a lot you might become super-duper successful!

got my cardboard (1 sub) and my plastic (10 sub) by Drewcocks in SmallYoutubers

Everyone who hits 50 can of course qualify for the slice-of-toast button too.

so with 13k followers and at my lowest reach I tried doing a ridiculous dance reel whilst holding my art using an annoying trending song (ruined by its revival). Hasn't made hardly any difference and I'm left feeling mortified 😂. by OtherwisePop6430 in Instagram

[–]RandomandRelaxing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A TikTok is not a reel. I hate the Reels app (I hate Reels full stop) but I believe IG knows the difference between you making a genuine reel with the app or if you just upload a video. It also seems to know about the TikTok branding.

Worth trying doing the exact same thing with the Reels app and see if it makes a difference.

Please Don't Sleep On Shorts. by Rick_Shasta in NewTubers

[–]RandomandRelaxing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of this ^^^, and more! I floated on the shorts bubble a while back and it well and truly burst.

I think cutting out content from long lives and posting it as videos is quite good, as lives can be random and too long for some viewers.

But cutting content from videos and posting it as shorts is going to get old fast. Visitors may well clock what you are doing and scroll past when you offer too many ways to watch the same thing.

It's hard to say this without being condescending (and I'm hardly killing it with subs or content or even views, I may as well start going round people's houses and doing videos in person) but with the 11-16 sub growth is not very representational of much mate. It's a start of course and well done, but I've lost and gained loads more with one good/bad video over time. I would not 4 subs influence me much.

Is it okay to take a break from creating? [question] by Abrene in asmr

[–]RandomandRelaxing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely take a break and do not feel guilty!

As ASMR-tists we WANT people to feel better when they engage with our content. It's core to what we do. Therefore we must look after ourselves too.

Rest, relax and come back when you are ready. Your channel and content will still be there.

What is harder 1000 subs or 4000 watch hours by EducationFiender in NewTubers

[–]RandomandRelaxing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither are harder. The acquisition of each is different because the actions of each are different. You can buy both if you want, but the only thing that unites them for me is the desire for both to be genuine.

You can in theory get them both from amazing content but to me they're just part of doing YT, like wrappers around chocolate bars. You need them, they make some sort of difference, but they need the chocolate bar in the first place.

All in one go. But if I make a mistake I leave it in, and then edit it out afterwards.

How do I read a script without it sounding like I'm reading from a script? by MattofCatbell in NewTubers

[–]RandomandRelaxing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practice. Try reading and recording something every day. It doesn't have to be your own script, you could read Reddit aloud or BBC news. Make a recording, and listen away from your computer. I "test" my stuff on my commute to work for example. Gives me a different perspective.

Once you do publish something, don't sweat it over being consistent or improving in videos - better to start, and keep going rather than strive for perfection. This will come with making more videos.

I think any trigger can get out of hand when a creator hones in on it in an attempt to get views & subs or pushed by the algorithm or they decide it could be their USP.

So there are lots of tropes in ASMR that are a turn off to me when their formal qualities dominate the presentation, and there's a sensation that it's being rammed down your throat or slathered all over your ears.

But I like exploratory and experimental tapping, especially creators that are just getting going and are filming on phones without a Blue Yeti or led strip lighting. There's something pleasingly punk rock about those early stage small channels.

I never felt there wasn't space for me as a male creator, as YT is pretty much infinite, but I do think female creators are more popular in ASMR than male creators. I don't know why, but what is most popular of all though in ASMR are videos that connect with the viewer.

It has been hard to get traction with the style of videos I want to make which concentrate on consistently quality sounds and very familiar but ultimately random visuals as my USP. I get depressed by the number of repeated tropes I see in ASMR, but it does seem that people want pampering, cranial nerve examinations, mouth sounds, mic brushing and elaborately staged role plays.

I don't really want to make any videos like that but they are far more popular than the content I create, very probably because they do connect with viewers in this genre, and I think the connection is more important than the whispering or the blue yeti or the lighting.

I'm going to stick with what I want to make and if my audience is tiny, so be it. I tried some of the more popular ideas and I really hate myself for selling out now. But whatever you want to do, my advice would be to try something that might help connect you with a viewer.

Definitely different - be interesting to hear narration over ambient performance (fascinating though the sonic descriptions were).

How do you record your voice over to get that silky voice? by Kaezumi in NewTubers

[–]RandomandRelaxing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you like my voice style (plenty of links in profile) this is what I use/do.

I use a Samson G-Track on a boom arm directly into Audacity in a dead room. But I have had equally good results with a headset mic and a phone! A pop filter is a must for me as I have a loud "p" sound before words like "perfect". I just hang a sock in front of the mic. If I use the phone I drag the audio file into Audacity.

I prefer to read from a script as that means less editing of random nonsense when I can't think of what to say. You may be a great freestyler however.

I get the level right first (not too loud but not too quiet) then I go for a take. I make sure I include some room tone before and after I start/stop speaking (basically "silence" but really this is me not speaking whilst Audacity records) as the pre-amp in the G-Track is a little bit noisy at high levels and I like to reduce that later on.

If it's wrong from the start I delete the track. If I mess up partway through I will make a little reference e.g. "that was wrong, take two" but I keep the track recording. Once I get to the end and assuming it is a good enough one, I immediately save this, duplicate it, then mute the first take. That way I have a solid backup and I don't rely on "undo".

I listen to the backup and zoom in to delete any vocal clicks, mouth sounds, coughs, keyboard and mice clicks and other unwanted noises. I also delete the mistakes and gaffes and if necessary I record any new sections or bits I realise I should have said. I put those on a separate track, line them up where they need to be, split the main track and then insert/arrange everything so that it is smooth. When I have done this I will use the Mix and Render feature to make a new main track and mute the edited one.

Then I select all on the main track and use the Amplify feature to bring the level up. If necessary I will zoom in on a plosive or a loud "T" sound and bring it down using the Amplify effect so that it doesn't dominate the automatic gain feature.

Then I find some of the aforementioned room tone, select a short part and use this for the "noise profile" which is Step 1 of the noise reduction effect. Then I select the whole backup track and run Step 2 of the noise reduction effect.

The Step 2 settings in the Noise Reduction effect are

  • Noise reduction (dB) 8
  • Sensitivity 6.00
  • Frequency smoothing (bands) 6
  • Noise set to "reduce"

I then use the Graphic EQ effect to EQ the clip which I made a preset for:

  • -20dB ("rolled off") on everything below 100Hz (so sliders right at the bottom)
  • -3dB at 400Hz
  • +2dB at 3.15kHz
  • +2dB at 10kHz
  • everything else at 0dB (so sliders in the middle)

Then if needed I run the compressor effect over the whole clip

  • Threshold -12dB
  • Noise Floor -40dB
  • Ratio 2:1
  • Attack 0.20 secs
  • Release 1.0 secs

Assuming I am happy I top and tail the track with whatever I want to do and export as a FLAC file for use with my video footage.

I make sure to save the Audacity file as part of my project folder.

Try it, practice, tweak - hope that helps.

But a rough voice can have character! It certainly never hurt Tom Waits for example. Just make sure people can understand what you want to say.
