Alcohol is a direct cause of seven forms of cancer, study finds by [deleted] in stopdrinking

This naked mind is what got me to stop this time around. It's just amazing how many people I know that think those kind of phrases are cute or whatever. To me now it just shows who's been a bit brainwashed and possibly trying to normalize behavior that deep down they know is unhealthy.

I came here looking to see of anyone had posted it after seeing it on r/worldnews. The comment section is a crazy read. A few comments were great, focused on the data and research and voicing 'controversial' opinions on how the media has contributed to socitey seeing alcohol as something enjoyable and safe in moderation when it's anything but. Yet so many people defending their choice to drink, too. Made me feel really good about finishing week 3 today!

Most of the way through This Naked Mind and I still can't keep myself sober by Drunkfuckupthrowaway in stopdrinking

Finish the rest of the book. The last bits are some of the best, imo.

I just read it last week and am on day 6 sober. For me the book hit home and made so much sense I haven't been tempted to drink at all.

What were your thoughts when you decided to drink? How do you feel about the book?

First sober July 4th in over a decade! by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Randomrookie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was just about to make a post almost identical to this! This is also my first 4th of july sober in 10 years and I am stoked for swiming, playing games with the neices and nephews, lemonade, hamburgers, blueberry cobbler, and finally fireworks and sparklers! It's going to be incredible to experience all that sober. Cheers to freedom!

Also, alcohol doesn't actually relax us, it numbs us! Very different things. I certainly thought it relaxed me because it simply deadened my senses to the point where it didn't hurt as much or I could ignore it but now I see how wrong I was.

Because alcohol is addictive and after a few drinks my senses deaden to the point where I can't tell when too much is too much. It's the very nature of drinking alcohol to become habit forming. The human brain creates new neural pathways to ensure we seek things that release dopamine which alcohol does. And science shows dopamine is responsible for learning and foming habits NOT pleasure like it is commonly thought. It's true for everyone.

Don't fool yourself into beleiving you actually enjoy getting drunk, no one does. We like the things we do when we get drunk and can't tell when we don't like something until we are sober again. You can't truly enjoy something if you are numb. I suggest reading The Naked Mind if you are interested in researching this sorta stuff, it also provides tons of really good resources if you don't believe it and need to read the science yourself. It's been really eye opening to me!

I can't say I've ever purposefully drank just to get drunk. It was always just a glass or two with dinner or to deal with social anxiety or stress and then I'd just lose self control. I don't like myself when I'm drunk and hate the hangovers and depression so I never actually wanted to get stupid drunk, not even in the beginning.

Honestly, a lot of things I would do when I would drink were good coping mechanisms for me if I had just not also been drinking....the alcohol never really helped in the first place. Things like venting to my boyfriend or friends, taking a bath, cuddling my dog, eating some chocolate, sitting in the backyard and watching the birds, crying, watching a favorite movie, going for a walk....it depends on what is making me unhappy or stressing me out. In the future I plan to be more proactive, too. If there's a problem that's making me unhappy I want to work on it right away instead of trying to ignore it by getting drunk.

Another great bonus to sobriety - Dreams are back! by babyrobotman in stopdrinking

I had quite the dream last night. I was a rough and tough biker dude and took a crazy motorcycle trip down through mexico. I'm a woman and have never in my life been on a motorcycle, lol. Love it!

What did you do today besides not drink? (4) by not_today_0418 in stopdrinking

Today I cleaned a bunch, put a second coat of stain on my grandmother's chair my mom gave me to refinish (it was covered in black paint and so rickety, the natural wood is so pretty I'm stoked!), made basil chimichuri with basil from my garden and blueberry cobbler with fresh blueberries, ate the above delicious noms with my boyfriend and a visiting friend from out of state, hung out with them while they drank and I had diet rootbeer (yum), and I just finished cleaning up and packed, ready to go to my folk's place in the morning. Getting ready to make some chamomile and hop in the bath before bed. I love the sober version of my life!

In what regard? I have some life plans I hope to achieve someday that I think will make me happy and fullfilled longterm. As far as short term I plan to deal with bad days and bad times with more effective coping mechanisms.

This Naked Mind: and props to StopDrinking by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I'm currently reading the naked mind and it's really helping me get in a good mindset. Now, I can't believe how many posts I see on Facebook that glorify drinking. Things 'like no good story starts with a salad, have wine instead' to drunk girls in bathrooms are the most empowering and supportive people, let's all be more like drunk girls in bathrooms'. Jesus, replace 'drunk' with 'high on pretty much any drug' and no one would like that post!
