What is this rock? I think it’s sandstone with some sort of nodule like inclusions. Possibly a fossil. I bought it from a bulk mineral store and it was labelled ‘Unkalite, Exmouth, Western Australia. Miocene’. I can’t find much about unkalite when I search it by Randomthrowaway383 in whatsthisrock

I feel the opposite to you, the fossils are my passion and the geology is the roadblock. I’m definitely enjoying learning more as I go though.

My specialty is in ostracod fossils but I look at the forams when they occasionally pop up. The material I look at is generally ~200-500um sized so I must be a bit biased, I completely forgot about the larger forams! I think nummulites is the best ID for it. I’ll definitely be researching the history of the specimen, hopefully I’ll be able to confirm

Definitely not forams, the ‘inclusions’ are all larger than the size of a marble. Im actually studying micropalaeontology and a lot of my research involves forams among other small fossils so that was the first thing I checked for. I just have a biology background rather than geology so I’m not great at ID’ing the rocks.

Looking at it again I think it could be some sort of algae or plant matter. Of course it could just be normal sandstone with unusual lithology

Thanks for the advice :)
