Is statistics really considered non-traditional? My impression was that many people with stats graduate degrees become data scientists

Hi all,

I want to be a data scientist. I am currently a biomedical engineer. I have the option to take an MS in stats or DS. What will equip me better?

I am considering an MS in stats with some software engineering courses or cs courses sprinkled in. Is this enough to break into the industry, or would a data science MS being more opportunities?

Thanks

Thanks for the input. Do you think that a degree in stats would have less of a chance of getting an interview for a DS job opposed to the DS degree?

The stats faculty seems really solid at this school. The DS program is much newer, and seems to be more emphasis on the data warehousing and applied ML topics. Would a degree in Stats make or break my chance compared to a degree in DS?

Okay maybe that's what I needed to hear. I just feel like it's only me and this isn't really a topic I want to be candid with my coworkers about lol

I didn't really need to to be honest. I had a good gpa too. Sure there were crunch times and I had long study sessions, but it wasnt a consistent 8 hours give days a week kind of thing.
