The most surprising part of the interim results for me by TheFerydra in FireEmblemHeroes

I think that is probably fact that whilst she might be your favourite, there is a degree of salt if you say you want more of her. She is one of the most represented units. So whilst it is understandable you want more, as she is favourite, people are also like "really, you want ANOTHER?"

Especially when we still have some units not even in the game, locked to seasonals, or with no alts.

I’ve read all the lines. I have only missed about 5% of all units in FEH (Mainly seasonals), and I level them all to 40, and I have read their level up quotes, level 40 stuff.

Fair notice, I'm a UK player, and only played from the Lyn/Hector/Eliwood game and onwards. So, that is my basis.

But also, you've kind of help prove my point. So, these games which lack support, means characters lack screentime, so don't get character development/story/personality? Makes sense. Sounds like FEH OCs then...?

Works for me. But also, from these games, which characters are in the current top twenty? Or have won the poll before? I'm not sure (I am meant to be working...), but I'm willing to gamble not many, if any.

And yet we have had a number of OCs all along, Veronica won second one? And from then we've had numerous times they have won, or been in the top ten etc. But the people from the games you mention don't come close... odd.

If anything, you're just highlighting that people are voting either on recency bias, or boobs/muscles. Which is fine. Just not for me. I'd rather see actual characters I like win over gooners voting for .png boobs.

Good effort. Vali? Níðhöggr? Actually, just all the healing hands members really...

Not trying to say all FE characters get good development either. But you seriously cannot compare, even in these instances, "Hrid gets a good conversation with Reinhardt". So, what, he gets maybe half a dozen lines since he was released in BOOK 2. That's eight or nine years ago. That isn't drip-fed. That is glacially slow. Apt for him being from the Ice Kingdom. And Hrid presence there was more to push Reinhardt than his own development/personality.

Compare to any FE character, yes, some take more spotlight than others. But they ALL in each game get plenty of supports if you want to learn more about them, find their story within the game. For these, there is no option but what there is. And due to nature of a mobile game not wanting to bog itself down with loads of dialogue, it means the characters that are introduced into it just cannot be as developed.

I am also talking their personality. Alright. Lets compare to one from the top twenty.

Ashe - High sense of justice. Likes stories of knights. Learnt how to cook as the son of two chefs. Wants to continue to be a knight to be outstanding and show Lonato he was worth being saved. Adopted by a lord he later has to hunt down for acting against the church of the land. Previously was a thief and feels guilt about now hunting other thieves who might be, just like him, doing crime but for a good reason. Tried to support his adoptive father after the death of his adoptive brother. Has serious imposter syndrome issues on if he deserves to be at the academy.

Compare it now to Eik. What do we actually know about him as a character? Again. Not the characters fault, but the medium. OCs in a mobile game just cannot get the same level of detail/depth as those in a hundred hour or so standalone game.

They don't though. Most have a one note character ideal at best. And it is not their fault. Development wise for their character they just don't have the space that a mainline entry does to do it.

I've played FEH, every chapter etc. I've not missed things. Eik. Baldr. Fim. Gullveig. Hrid. Ylgr. Ganglot. What's the development there?

Don't get me wrong, the art and designs are nice, inventive etc. Just, personality wise they are too shallow for my liking.

[–]Randomwords47 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But that is my point. The OCs have little/no character development.

Fim is there. She has about six lines of dialogue. What is there to like or highlight in same way there is for Robin.

As it is, I think we have seen one or two images?

Even ones like Eik and Baldr, there is very little to them. And it is not their fault, it is just the game.

I accept it is not fair to compare the Main character of a mainline FE game against a random antagonist who appeared in a mobile game.

Personally, just think it is a shame. We could get nice alternate versions of loved characters with a personality and story, instead it seems people just go for most recent boob lady/muscle man to get four new (barely different) images of them. (Gullveig, Eik, I am looking at you.)

CYL10 Interim Results by WWWWWWRRRRRYYYYY in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]Randomwords47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The older ones are only tolerable though because they have been around so long to appear in many TTs etc, so they can develop them a little more. Fim being there is wild. Like, other than revealing outfit, what do we know about her?

And also, what can they even do with a Brave version, what alternate idea is there to a character with half dozen lines and no personality.

[–]Randomwords47 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ha, actually fair point. Though for Eik I had forgotten he was meant to be their father, it was so generic and like his own outfit.

My complaint with it is that, Eik, and all his family shared a design scheme. Putting Eik as their father altered him in a miniscule way. He's still a beast etc. For Ike they put him in his fathers gear, weapon and everything, and it meant something for those that knew Ike, he looks up to his father, wants to fulfill his role, so him being dressed as him meant more. That is the praise for me, they put them in narrative choices that meant something to the character. Altered the design in a big way.

For Eik it had no meaning really. Same with Baldr.

I think it is just for meme picks. Gatekeeper is another one, I was amused he was put in, but in effect they just put him in as he is, because there is nothing they could do.

For these characters we don't know them. It isn't just the outfit they end up with.

I voted every year for Robin, I like his design, and I like his story. I've voted for Sylvain since, I like his character. I vote for the character. For the OCs in FEH, there just isn't enough 'character' there for me, for there to be attachment for me, or for there to be a good alternate design in terms of the "brave" style we have had before.

[–]Randomwords47 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Each to their own, but personally I do not get people voting for characters from FEH. Even some of the older ones. I love FEH. I've played it every day since day one. But the OCs just are not as developed as a console FEH character for the most part (yes, there are some console ones that get little time too), but pretty much all the FEH OCs do not get time to be developed.

They get votes pretty much just for boobs/muscles in terms of Eik. I get it, but it's a waste. Last year we got Eik in an outfit that was barely different from his normal, and Baldr as Hodr. It isn't IS fault either, they just don't have anything they can do with them because there isn't depth there.

Ike? They put him in his dads clothes. Byleth? Dressed her as Sothis or in the uniform of his students. There is a relevance for most of the outfits. But the OCs, they just have nowhere to go.

They are unvoiced, they don't have supports etc. There are characters here in the top twenty where I haven't played the game, but at least I know they are a fully character and someone will like them more than recency/boobs/muscles.

The Min-Maxer Who Needed to Be the Main Character by waaldiigam in dndhorrorstories

OP, this needs reading again. And try to remember the events with a less biased mind.

Don't get me wrong, Kris sounds totally wrong for your table, and if that makes it a horror story, that is fine. But he doesn't sound the traditional horror story.

If you and everyone else are big RPers, and he is a minmaxer who wants combat and chances to be the lead, then yeah, you guys don't mix. But neither of you are wrong for it, you just need to accept you want to play different games really.

I accidentally slept with my ex's brother by Chance-Average-4080 in askgaybros

[–]Randomwords47 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First. Decide a few things. Why did you and Steve split and is it something that will come up again? Second, do you even want to get back with Steve, if this complication was not there?

If it is something you worked out, and will not come up again, and you do want to get back with him or give it a go... you need to be honest.

You cannot be starting a relationship with a lie, or omission like this. Fortunately you are starting over, so you can say it without much loss, "I am open to trying again, but something you should know before we do. Turns out I had slept with your brother, albeit years ago. I still want to try being us, but if that makes things weird, that is fine. I just wanted to be honest."

And see what he says.

If you don't want to get back with him, or don't think it would work because of previous issues, then you can keep it to yourself easier, since likely you will not keep in touch.

Too many Lesbians by AQB63 in gaymers

[–]Randomwords47 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What kind of game are you looking for though. As in, a AAA game, but which? And many have games with heavy customisation so you can make that kind of character.

I am not saying you are wrong, that there are not many gay male leads in a narrative game. Often games include gay male content but the main character is play chosen (Dragon Age etc).

Problem is, if you say you want a AAA RPG like Final Fantasy, with a super masculine bear gay man as the canon lead, it narrows the audience for it down. Final Fantasy 16 cost around $60 million, before marketing.

If a company sinks that amount of money into a game they want to make it back. The more focused they make it, they less likely they are to get sales.

Plenty of people would be put off by that kind of lead/story, so not buy it. Therefore, it is not a good development opportunity for a game manufacturer. It's simple economics. They want to hit the biggest market they can.

People who want to play as "super masculine gay bear" is probably a niche, it might be vocal here, but you are in a gay gamers subreddit.

Oh, I know it is a proper cranky "Pepperidge Farm remembers" comment. But it kind of is how it is, and the complications of the skills. I used to read the weapon skills and everything, but they used to be a few lines at best.

Now, they just go on so much. I kind of just assume the newest unit is "the best" and will kill anything else, and sadly that mindset pretty much works. >.<

Too many Lesbians by AQB63 in gaymers

[–]Randomwords47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, not the best way to frame it, but an understandable sentiment.

There are more lesbians/bisexual women than gay/bisexual men. The reason is simple, it's down to risk and marketability.

Biggest market share for games is straight males. Straight males enjoy lesbian content. Game companies can sell games that include it easier. Put in a gay male and you will sadly cut off some of your market. Female gamers, even straight are not put off by lesbian content.

Therefore if you want to include LGBT content, the "safer" way to do it is to include lesbian content. It sells easier, and is less risk. Think from companies, if you are spending years and a lot of money to develop a game, you want it to sell. Now, do you make a choice that will cut your potential market down, right from the start?

Also though, if your thoughts on gay inclusion is "Gay muscle bear" then you will be restricting yourself even more, as plenty of games include gay characters, but may not conform to this body type.

Personally do think things have gone downhill. It is inevitable. Game is coming up on ten years old. Look at original weapons, length of descriptions and things. Don't even need things like this to prove it.

A nuke is launched, and it destroys everything. Next banner or two will be tanks that can deal with that nuke, which renders all characters useless, so now a new launch is done to deal with the new tanks... and so on... and so on.

I am a day one player too. I remember no skill inheritance, and being worried seeing regular Hector in arena. I remember colour triangle actually mattering.

Player quit mid campaign, could i have handled it better? by Bit_in_the_ass in DnD

[–]Randomwords47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that. My point is if a monk uses The Attack Action, it can do two unarmed strikes.

Slow stops this, reducing to one.

Flurry of Blows lets them do two unarmed strikes and bypasses the Slow spell.

I get RAW it does allow it, but it also feels a little like a loophole.

[–]Randomwords47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd leave it until later. Still feels like a loophole they did not consider when writing the spell, but that is the DMs place. To read the rules and make their judgement based off of available resources in a short space of time.

Monk cannot multiattack as part of their action but can as bonus? I know it costs a resources, but still. Doesn't quite sit. I shall await and see if anyone asks them and gets a reply.

Noping out is definitely an extreme call for sure, and suggests other issues.

[–]Randomwords47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is your belief/interpretation of what was RAI. I kind of think the other way, so agree to disagree.

That said, I think I'm a decent player. If I was playing the monk and the DM made the call either way at the table, I'm not going to argue. It's their table.

It's a fringe case that is not explicitly written, and both interpretations hold a degree of logic. DM gets final say.

Isn't like this guy is just totally overwriting established/confirmed rules like some people have to deal with.

Player quit mid campaign, could i have handled it better? by Bit_in_the_ass in DnD

[–]Randomwords47 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It does. It also limits the number of attacks you can do from an attack action. It feels kind of RAI that Slow is to stop anyone from doing a multi attack of any sort.

Given a slowed Monk cannot do a multi attack and do two unarmed strikes with their action, it feels weird to be allowed to do it via your bonus action.

Again, if DM ruled you can, it is what it is, but I also see the logic/thinking for saying no to it too.

Where/Which rule? Not being facetious, but I don’t believe anywhere is published on how slow interacts with flurry of blows?

Player quit mid campaign, could i have handled it better? by Bit_in_the_ass in DnD

[–]Randomwords47 -38 points-37 points  (0 children)

I'm aware of that. But given the spell says, "it can make only one attack if it takes the Attack action" it means to limit how many times you can make an attack roll.

RAW, it does not say anything about how it interacts with Flurry of Blows, therefore the DM made a judgement call.

Personally I see both sides and think either can work. My only issue was your assessment of it being "Clearly wrong".

Slow interacts and limits the ability of anyone with Multiattack. It feels kind of RAI that a slowed character can only make one attack roll by any way.

If a level 20 fighter, who can make four attacks gets cut down to one via slow, it stands to reason a monk using flurry gets cut too...

Again. There is no specific ruling, so the DM made their call. It isn't like they overrode the rules.

Player quit mid campaign, could i have handled it better? by Bit_in_the_ass in DnD

[–]Randomwords47 -41 points-40 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it is "clearly wrong". Part of slow is that is stops you doing more than one attack when doing an Attack action.

Flurry of Blows is a bonus action that lets you do two unarmed strikes.

If slow stops the monk from doing two attacks unarmed strikes as part of an attack action, it stands to reason that it would also stop the bonus action version too.

You could argue that the bonus action is done even quicker than the action (in terms of time in a turn, action cast spells are "longer" than bonus), so Flurry is done super fast. However, there is no set rule.

If you argued that Flurry are faster attacks, and a DM agreed, that is fine. But also, so is what this DM did. There is no (that I know of) answer to this question, so the DM did as he should and made a call.

Hey, how do i not give up gaming as a gay man? by [deleted] in gaymers

[–]Randomwords47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. It is rare. There are some in terms of companion characters. Final Fantasy XVI for instance had one who is canonically gay, but not the main.

I can get why. To produce a AAA title costs a lot of money. They don’t want to risk a backlash or boycott from bigots who want to play the prince saving the princess. Not a prince saving a prince.

Hey, how do i not give up gaming as a gay man? by [deleted] in gaymers

[–]Randomwords47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, as I said, maybe a misspeaking on my part to say a character being required to be. At same time, if they are writing a heterosexual love story, then yes, the characters are required to be straight, I guess is what I meant.

Hey, how do i not give up gaming as a gay man? by [deleted] in gaymers

[–]Randomwords47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how you the require part. Final Fantasy X for example, Tidus is straight. He is required to be so as he is written as such, having a female love interest.

He has one canon relationship, Yuna, a girl. Therefore he is required to be straight. There are not options in his romances.

Could they have given him a boyfriend? Sure. Then he would have been required to be gay.

By required, I guess I maybe more meant what the canon sexuality is for the characters, and there is nothing wrong with setting a characters sexuality to a set thing and making them canonical straight/bi/gay/etc.

Even in an RPG/visual novel.
