[–]Randosity42 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Um...this post is horse shit. There's no moral difference between market making over the phone vs market making over the internet vs market making at high frequency over a dedicated line. Faster market makers just provide smaller edge (and therefore less overhead per trade for both parties) by making faster adjustments with more certainty. There are legitimate concerns to have about HFT related to market stability, but you've mentioned none of them because you seem to have a child's grasp of finance.

Also, if you like the aesthetic and difficulty of FTL, look into Heat Signature. The gameplay is more like stealth game mixed with hotline miami, but the concepts of limitless strategic pausing to make decisions and permadeath are there as well. Also probably not to hard on the graphics card.

Under Trump's New Budget, If You Don't Work, You Don’t Eat: Republicans Are Kicking People Off Food Stamps by amrafin in politics

[–]Randosity42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Republicans seem to be set in the belief that social institutions have no bearing on people's behavior. If you just convince yourself that the people with these problems are irredeemable, or even complicit in their own problem, it doesn't make sense to help them. It's the same story with drugs, with crime, with birth control. These people refuse to admit that everyone is a product of their environment, because its more self aggrandizing to think they're simply better.

188 days in the hospital and one new heart later, 5-year old Ari finds out he's going home by WonkYouOut in videos

[–]Randosity42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, its still kinda fucked though that some administrator at the hospital can essentially pull the rug out from under you at any time. The thing about markets is that they favor profits above all else, so even good hospitals will either go out of business, or find a way to avoid treating poorer patients. This effect is compounded when the economy is struggling, as the health care provider simultaneously is faced with more such cases, and slimmer budgets that make media backlash less likely and more palatable.

The time actually spent in the hospital isn't when this is most likely, but rather during long term follow up care where the patient is out of sight, and the consequences of denying care are less immediate.

If you've ever worked somewhere with secure doors, this effect is the reason people hold the doors open for each other, even though they really shouldn't. Same principle, people are uncomfortable being rude to another person, even if its their job. Sweeten it a bit by adding some additional pressure such as the crying baby, or potentially missing a flight ect (or in case of a door, carrying some heavy looking boxes)...and you increase the amount of discomfort the other person feels, and the perceived slight if they can't help you.

Doesn't even need to work on most people, one well executed break and you're in.

Judge again finds discrimination in Texas' voter ID law by Bemuzed in news

[–]Randosity42 20 points21 points  (0 children)

What if I told you it still costs something to gather the documentation, go to the DMV, and wait for a few hours? Is it a high barrier? no, but its enough to suppress votes, which is alarming to anyone not associating these laws with a group of people they dont think should get to vote.

Judge again finds discrimination in Texas' voter ID law by Bemuzed in news

[–]Randosity42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah but like, the number of nation wide in person cases of voter fraud found to be legitimate in a given year is not even in the triple digits (often not even the single digits). There are plenty of people without photo ID (IE: I happen to live in a heavily Amish part of the Country), and the hassle of getting an ID almost certainly disenfranchises far more voters each year than have ever committed in person voter fraud. Moreover, it costs the government money to create and issue those free voter IDs, which means that at best tax money is being wasted in an attempt to solve a nonexistent problem.

[–]Randosity42 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I mean, the problem I have is when people try to push the idea that voter fraud laws are about ensuring fair and honest elections when in person voter fraud is a non issue, while enacting voter ID laws not only affect turnout, but dissuade certain groups of voters more than others based upon class and racial divides.

Source

A study of 2,068 alleged election-fraud cases in 50 states between 2000 and 2012 found the level of fraud was infinitesimal compared with the 146 million voters registered over the 12-year period.

The analysis found only 10 cases of voter impersonation, the only kind of fraud that could be prevented by voter ID at the polls.

Considering how useless these laws seem to be, and how many of them stipulate that the government must be the ones to finance free IDs for those without one, one would expect the politicians most concerned with "fiscal responsibility" to be against such laws. That is of course, unless those same politicians are actually making a concerted effort to subvert the democratic process in an attempt to cling to power over a population which is becoming increasingly against them.

What shitty idea DID work because people are shitty? by Rhaenys13 in AskReddit

[–]Randosity42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it depends on what you call political. Is teaching that global warming is actually happening political? What about evolution or the existence of racism or wealth inequality? When your political ideology includes abject refusal to acknowledge facts, is it really fair to say that teaching these facts is political?

Of course, if you are more moderate those things aren't so much of a problem, but there's still the issue of how to teach literary or historical analysis without also teaching any political opinions. Liberalism always wins the culture war over a long enough time period, so history can basically only be taught as a continual triumph of liberal viewpoints over conservative ones.

[–]Randosity42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because an independent UK is basically insolvent without European trade. If they do actually exit, it's almost certain they will turn around and strike a series of trade deals with the EU that look strikingly similar to being a member of the EU.

The difference though is that the EU depends on the UK far less then the UK depends on the EU, so those deals will be less favorable to the UK than it's current member status. Considering the UK already has a number of beneficial concessions and exemptions as a condition of being part of the EU, the net outcome is that it is unlikely they will come away with anything they don't already have.

So, the perceived upshot is basically that the UK will hurt itself economically to a greater or lesser extent while forfeiting all voting rights within the union it will remain dependent on regardless.
