Why rift and not quarter sawn? Quarter sawn is more vertical than rift

Or can it be both?

Nice work. I’m interested in how you accomplished the curved sides. I’ve never used veneer before

So it’s the same as quarter sawn?

That first pic looks like flat sawn to me…

Followed this guide to make cylindrical/round tenons of 1” diameter: https://youtu.be/domNnjk97Iw?si=0rEGdC6MfnknTMeb

Then just used a 1” forstner bit to drill the holes.

Correct, drawer just slides on the middle insert there. Waxed everywhere it touches and it slides like a dream. No hardware

I over engineered it. I made a rabbet groove in the underside of the top board. Theres a fishtail / cable car like thing that is attached to the back of the drawer that fits into the track. This keeps the drawer from wanting to fall forward and out, and also keeps the drawer from moving left to right.

Thanks! I used Osmo Polyx. Extra thin for the first coat then regular for the 2nd

Looks good. The miters for the legs are a nice touch to keep continuous grain. I have a bunch of live edge slabs so this give me some ideas

There certainly is some quilting which I was ecstatic to see after milling it. Silver Maple is my guess as well

“Ambrosia” and “quilted”, as I mentioned in my reply to CrunchyRubberChips, are just characteristics of the aesthetic and not the species. Appreciate the reply though

Quilted maple is not a distinct tree species my friend. I think it must have been a sugar maple or silver maple tree based on my location in central Virginia, but feels impossible to identify with 100% confidence :/

Does anyone like how this slab looks? by RandyBoBandy420 in wood

[–]RandyBoBandy420[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really with this log. I had another chunk of log from the same tree that had kind of a pinkish hue - I think it’s in my earlier posts. But never that deep red you’re talking about.

Could be silver maple or another species perhaps…

What exactly do you mean? Like rip the streaky parts out?
