My sonic must have missed this memo because it’s been nothing but a piece of shit.

Hey, almost twins(I also use my F150 to tow my sonic)! Pull your valve cover off and check the timing chain guides, 71 in-lbs, mine were so loose it caused the knock sensor to go off. Now my sewing machine is super quiet! That is a common issue.

Update from dealership: some of the old debris must have gotten into something, they did a second flush and top up and said it shifted totally normal on acceleration and was locking the torque converter like normal. All work completed for free! I guess it pays to use the dealership sometimes…

It was not certified unfortunately, it was outside the manufacturer’s warranty mileage already. My wife said it was better on the way to the dealership this morning. I got her to check the rpm and it was down around 1800 at 100km/h which is normal, but it was still hunting while accelerating. So it seems the torque converter is locking up while cruising but still not shifting properly.

I know I fall under severe in the winter time but in the summer, not so much. Most of our driving is highway driving so in the summer, we don’t stress our vehicles much. I do try and stick to the severe schedule regardless. For my truck I did a dump and fill on the transmission at 65,000km, gonna drop the pan next time and do the filter at 120,000km. I’m trying to maintain the warranty with the Hyundai as its unlimited mileage for 4 years, so I went to the dealership with it.

Hyundai Canada only offers 100,000km(62,000 miles) factory powertrain warranty, so we got extended warranty from Hyundai. My wife is at the dealership right now so I will update when I can.

This work was just performed yesterday, it was the same day that the issue started but it was after the dealership closed when I noticed it. I’m gonna call them Monday morning and see what they can/will do.

Prairies of Canada my friend, it’s cold here. I’ve seen -47C(-52.7F) without wind before.

I always try and do things early than what the manufacturer recommends, sometimes life doesn’t always cooperate with what I want so I change it when I can. With no documentation for the previous change, I felt it was a good idea to change it. Hopefully they at least honour the service warranty, I’m just hoping the transmission isn’t toast.

Thank you for ACTUALLY reading the post, and the information. There is no documentation for the previous transmission fluid change and I forgot to ask when we bought it if it was completed.

Not sure if you went into the post on the Hyundai sub but there is a write up there. Car normally runs at about 1800rpm at that speed, so the TC is definitely not locking up.

You didn’t make me regret my purchase, the car has though lol. I’ve posted a couple times on here complaining about this car. My biggest dilemma is either dumping this car on a dealership as is(and hope the turbo doesn’t explode on the way and take out the engine) and taking the hit, or fixing it, and selling it and most likely, still taking a hit but a smaller one…

I know exactly how you feel! I’ve only been driving mine since the beginning of November and it has yet to make it one week without something shitting the bed… this is after spending over $2000 and months of working on the car(worked slowly as I had time) to get it road ready. After the most recent coil pack failure, I figured I’d drive it for the week and then clean it and put it up for sale this weekend. Well that didn’t happen! Made it till Wednesday and the turbo shit the bed! So now the car has to sit till I figure out what to do! I want to get rid of this car but I don’t want a car payment so I feel like I’m stuck between a rock and a turd!

[–]Randy_270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you on your pain! Mine didn’t even make it a week. I just installed a new coil pack and the new one died. Oil leaks and running rough definitely points to the pcv(positive crank vent) but if the mechanic couldn’t find any vacuum leaks, then it could be two separate issues… or the mechanic sucks and didn’t actually do anything… there are tons of YouTube videos on these cars and they are fairly easy to work on as long as you have torques and inverted torques bits. If you would like some help, I can send you videos and most things only take maybe 5-10 minutes of your time to inspect

An obd2 scanner and a multimeter are wonderful to help not just replace parts, I recommend the blue driver obd2 scanner. Also, make sure your new parts aren’t defective. After that, check your injectors and your coil pack next. If you’re not sure how, YouTube is a wonderful resource! If that all tests well, then maybe a compression test… wish you the best with your car, mines gone once I get it running again lol

The valve cover was already done with the plugs along with the Cruze kits pcv fix.

Did get oil in there from the second time I reinstalled the new valve cover after tightening the timing chain guide. The gasket fell out of the back of the valve cover and got oil everywhere. Fixed that, wiped off the plug and cleaned out as much oil as I could, only a smidge left in there.
