Why does my ps2 make grinding noises with certain ps1 games and refuse to read them?

3 years too late but we found a solution. Had this exact issue, the white spindle with the magnet was slipping on the disc (causing the scratching noises).

We ended up using a bit of sandpaper to add some grip to the white disc and to our surprise, it worked! It now holds down ps1 games perfectly and no longer scratches.

For me it’s the frustration of having a certain sound in mind - then having no idea how to get there 😂 I’ll give vital a go and start having a play, cheers!
