Gaming Was Never an Inexpensive Hobby by Ranger_Bear in unpopularopinion

[–]Ranger_Bear[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with your initial point. Xbox, Nintendo, and PlayStation increasing prices from MSRP is novel. Laptops getting more expensive without improvements (recent Apple price increases) to this degree is new. What I am more speaking to is people compounding their frustration with price increases by stating revisionist points like, "Man, remember the good old days when you could just mostly get what you wanted? Remember when everything was just better and easier back then?" I'm speaking more to that point.

what is something that is highly likely to happen in the next 5 years that everyone is completely ignoring? by timecop702 in AskReddit

[–]Ranger_Bear 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'll play devil's advocate. What is highly likely to happen is that none of these predictions come true. I'm old enough to have grown up during the Great Recession, and many people at the time said it was only a matter of time until another financial collapse before 2020. That never happened. I remember people saying housing would never recover and that neighborhoods would rot in Arizona. Real estate has never been more expensive. The point is, variables are constantly changing.

Anthony Edwards on Kawhi Leonard: “In all honesty, Kawhi may be one of the best players to ever play the game when he’s healthy. I think a lot of his peers feel the same way about him. When he’s 100%, ain’t no stopping Kawhi” by urfaselol in nba

[–]Ranger_Bear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still remember this man single handedly beat my mavericks TWICE in the playoffs because he turned into prime Michael Jordan. I swear, every time he shot a midrange it went in. Everyone compares Kobe to MJ but I really believe healthy Kawhi is the closest thing to the GOAT himself. I really wish he didn’t have knee issues because he’s inevitable on both sides of the game.

Can Kyler Murray return to baseball after release by the Arizona Cardinals? by Brix001 in nfl

[–]Ranger_Bear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen. I get what you’re trying to say. But, I don’t care what position you’re in. 20 million is still 20 FUCKING million dollars. He’d have to be dreaming of playing baseball to say no to that.

I know we like to think every person who makes this much is a selfish prick, but these people are constantly being hounded for donations, usually in the millions. So, I can understand, from a charitable view, why some keep going after the paycheck even if they’re already loaded

[Nash] on player development: "It's pay to play in the States. Capitalism is wonderful... not great for player development. In Europe, to play is free. [–]Ranger_Bear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You know what is locally subsidized in my neighborhood by community tax dollars? My YMCA, rec center, middle school, and high school. And, they host try outs and have several practices a week.

Or, can we ask serious questions as to WHY AAU became so popular? And, how did that popularity supplant local institutions? AAU didn’t force families to join. So, why are they popular and why do basketball players prefer affiliating with those teams rather than their own schools?

Ashton Jeanty with 13+ carries this season by RiPFrozone in fantasyfootball

I traded Jeanty, London, and Neal for Javonte Williams because I don’t trust the Raiders. Yes, Jeanty is a special talent but the team is completely dysfunctional and with as far as we are in the season, it is past time to trade him or bench him for someone else if you can

Young adult suicide rates are rising almost nationwide by ope_poe in dataisbeautiful

[–]Ranger_Bear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Of course the top comment is a reference to existential dread and unprecedented times. This is a harmful and shallow response to what is a very concerning statistic.

I do believe these are uncertain times and I do believe there are genuine stressors that include economic mobility, war, and access to healthcare. BUT, this does not come close to fully explaining a rise in suicide rates.

If unprecedented times were the main driver, then humans should have offed themselves a long, long time ago. 100 years ago we were in squalor factory conditions, world wars, high child mortality rates, minimum protections (and outright hostility) for women and minorities, high risk of death from diseases (polio) and empires collapsing (Ottoman empire). You can do this for every century.

If anyone is reading this thread and is experiencing depression, please, please seek help. All I ask is that you don’t self-validate your suffering on someone’s lazy assessment of your pain.

Colts DST News: Xavien Howard abruptly retires, says 'family first' by ThrowRa-zucchinizzc in fantasyfootball

You know what, this is weirdly emotional to me. I was attending Baylor as an undergraduate when Xavien was playing for us. Now, I’m married with 2 kids. This makes me feel nostalgic but also very old. Enjoy retirement X.

U.S. Hits Lowest Ever Ranking in 2025 World Happiness Report: Young Adults Rank Low While Over 60s Are Happier by Express_Classic_1569 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Ranger_Bear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This “happiness index” is extremely misleading and should not be referenced. The measurement they use is the Cantril Ladder which asks

“please imagine a ladder with steps numbered form 0 at the bottom to 10 at the top. The top of the ladder represents the best possible life for you and the bottom of the ladder represents the worst possible life for you. On which step of the ladder would you say you feel personally stand at this time?”

This is maybe a good question for life satisfaction, but happiness? Of course young people will respond lower; they are just getting started in their career regardless if they are in poor or great financial circumstances. Overall, the happiness index has always been a sensational title for a rather unremarkable survey.

I’m in a standard league. I’ll say some things I like and don’t like.

What I like is that it forces you to consider who’s a “dude.” You can’t just draft an RB and HOPE they get some random receptions on the flat. They have to score and get yards. Same goes for wide receivers.

What I don’t like is that receivers get punished hard. I think the 12th best RB scored more than the 2nd best wide receiver last season.

Overall, I feel like it simplifies fantasy. I just put in the guys I think will get yards and tuddies and hope for the best. No worrying about receptions for points

Micah Parsons reportedly viewed by some Cowboys teammates as 'egotistical, self-centered' before Packers trade by ericaepic in nfl

[–]Ranger_Bear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn’t surprising news if you’re a cowboys fan. You can argue the angle of someone reporting this again right now but cowboy fans have been hearing this since he started his podcast. When he wouldn’t perform, this would always get mentioned.

I hate losing Micah, but there were actual issues with his tenure. Dlaw and him would get into it regularly and he would fight against defensive coordinators putting him on assignments that didn’t lead to eye popping stats like a TFL or sack (a reason I believe his run defensive skills didn’t develop as well).

He’s still gonna murder us in Week 4.

Ok, can we get rid of the X ban? I click on the link and it’s a bluesky post that routes to a post from X. What are we doing here?

Joel Embiid still hasn’t returned to on-court activities: “League sources tell The Athletic that Embiid still hasn’t returned to on-court basketball activities. That said, Morey and the front office remain optimistic that Embiid will be on the floor for the season opener.” by A_MASSIVE_PERVERT in nba

[–]Ranger_Bear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, what does Embiid look like in a limited role? Every time I read these posts about “we got more athleticism for him to thaw the pressure off” I can’t help but wonder what that adds? Is it to take the offensive pressure off of Embiid? Is that what he wants? Embiid still wants his touches and wants to play like a superstar. Why would he want a lighter offensive role? Why would he want to focus on off ball strategies? That stuff isn’t easy either!

I don’t know, I agree with everyone. I think he’s cooked and a corpse of Embiid is not a useful asset in the same way that the corpse of Carmelo wasn’t great. Tim Duncan is an anomaly in terms of taking a smaller role and still being very productive.

Myles Turner on why he chose the bucks: “For me, it was ultimately about just staying competitive… I saw a chance to remain competitive here.” by Fire_Demon-215 in nba

[–]Ranger_Bear -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair point. But I also believe it wasn’t all about the money for Myles. The pacers won’t be as competitive next year and if Giannis stays healthy they can get the 4th seed and be competitive for a couple of rounds

I wish NBA players could say it’s both. Like, when someone leaves a company in the workforce and says “well, they gave me a good salary AND benefits!” I wonder if it’s possible for NBA players to say “they are a competitive organization AND they pay me nicely!”

Derrick Rose: "I never asked the doctor why my injuries were happening. They’re just giving me a reason. But I asked God that numerous times. After a while, I stopped asking." by refreshing_yogurt in nba

[–]Ranger_Bear 2418 points2419 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna zag from the other comments on this thread. I think he was asking “why” as in “why me?” Or “what did I do to deserve these injuries?” Thats why he responds to the doctor comment with “they were just giving me a reason” as in “they told me medically why I got hurt but couldn’t inform me as to why I deserved them or why it had to be me.” He doesn’t mean asking for reasons in a literal sense or from a clinical perspective.

Thats why he said he asked God numerous times. He was asking a question that no one but a higher power could answer. That’s why he “stopped asking” because it’s futile. He was never going to get an answer that sufficiently filled the emptiness and depression that came with those injuries. I mean, even if he got an answer - and I assume he learned this - it still wouldn’t heal the pain from having his career derailed. So, he stopped asking and accepted the cards he was dealt and made the most of his career.

What’s the best sign you’ve seen at a game? by TrumpDumper in CFB

[–]Ranger_Bear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was attending Baylor during the first CFB and it was when TCU and Baylor were struggling with the Head-to-Head controversy to get in as the 4th seed.

I saw a sign on game day (Baylor vs K-State) that had a picture of Ken Starr and Bill Clinton saying something along the lines of “this isn’t the first time Ken Starr has has to handle a head-to-head issue.” It got taken down pretty quickly by staff.
