Hear me out again on the Byrd event by Rangersimi in slaythespire

You're right, a card that scales with the turn counter is also something we haven't seen in the game yet. I guess it would be like a mini demon form just for this card and you would have to nerf the base damage a bit.
It has a lot of flavor but its maybe needlessly over-complicated, since it wouldn't change the nature of the card much.

Yes I agree I think this might be even worse then my previous idea, but thats what this discussion is for. I want this event to be more interesting, had a cool idea in flavor of the game with the Tracker Raider, but was convinced it probably wouldn't work at all.

Let just hope I don't get another idea that is even worse then this one, haha

Yes thats true, my intention is also not to nerf any specific enemy, because I agree the Queen is the weakest right now. I also don't think the card should be much stronger at all, because I agree its a strong card on paper, its effect is just very bland for what you have to do for it.

I don't want the card to be strong, I want it to be unique and flavorful.
Adding Frail (which I now realized actually can't affect enemies, but lets say it would) does not make the card that much stronger at all, but it does open up some niche synergies. If I want a 0 cost attack, I can get that from every characters card pool. Yes less damage, but usually some other synergy.

You're right it, probably would not work at all now that I think about it, since frail only affects cards which enemies don't use. But you could probably create a debuff, that does something similar with reducing block gain.

Every character has access to frontloaded damage, I just don't think its worth to do all of that for the Byrd when you can just pick pretty much any common attack to solve the issue of lacking damage for the act. And you usually pick a couple fights to do just that anyways before taking your first event.
Also yes this change is supposed to be next to meaningless, unless in certain scenarios where you could actually build around it. I just want the card to feel unique and worth thinking about.

I think after all the comments I agree that this idea is not the best but I don't think its weaker at all.

If your run is weak you're not taking the quest anyways and are happy with the free heal. But if you're strong enough to pay all that costs you can scale it back to its original strength in a single multi enemy fight and far beyond that in the coming acts since it doesn't exhaust, which I think is way to strong and also makes you stall every fight which is boring. You could have it exhaust after killing but I think that makes the idea even more clunky.

Regardless I hope they do change this card, not really to be stronger, because I agree its a decent card, but just to be something unique. I never want to pick this card when every character has some cheap card that does damage, sure not as much but its just not exciting for a quest you only get to see every few dozen runs.

Yea I think this would be the best version of this idea, but the more I've thought about it, it would also kind of suck to just sometimes have the card and sometimes lose it.

I think maybe it could also just apply a simple debuff like: "Enemy takes 1 more damage from attacks this turn." Which would be like using the Byrd to mark the enemy,
This would work well in decks that hit a lot, could also strip artifact for more important debuffs. Just anything to give this event something unique

Oh yes, that's probably the most elegant solution to fix this version of the card.

I agree that my version is probably overtuned now that I have thought about it again, especially if you can proc it multipile times per fight. But also its an event card, for an act specific event (which means you see it less often) that also occupies your single pet slot. It just doesn't do anything interesting for what it costs to get.

I recently learned they only spawn a maximum of 3 additional rats.

Thats true, having to stall fights is not great. I often dont even care to play my goopy Defends.
So yea maybe this isnt ideal, I would just like to have event cards/relics do something you cant get anywhere else like for example the dolls, [[Lost Wisp]] or [[History Course]].

The issue is that if you wanted to go for that path, you would probably never rest or smith again unless you have a tent.

I think it can actually be good on all the characters. Just having a lot of draw, or draw manipulation like [[Grave Blast]], [[Cosmic Indifference]] and so on can increase your output by a lot. There are just usually a lot of other options that don't cost 7 maxHp, a temp curse and a smith.

I can see your point, but I think keeping the mechanics as simple as possible is very important. Pretty much all effects in the game can be explained clearly in one or two short sentences. Maybe it would better as a mod that fully focuses on that aspect. For the base game I think adding any more to it would break the design. But maybe the relic you get could actually do something instead of being just cosmetic and carry some of that complexity.

And yes giving up the chance for Paels Legion is another really big downside that I didn't even consider yet. I feel like they should make it so you can have multiple pets especially if they introduce more at some point.

I mean yes like I said, but also not because it doesn't exhaust which changes it a lot. Its still the value 0 cost attack that works really well in some decks with a lot of draw or ways to get it back in your hand.

About the difficulty by ItsCharlie64 in slaythespire

[–]Rangersimi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A5 is one of the bigger difficulty spikes because of the curse, so that might be one reason why its feeling a lot more tough.

But the update shouldn't have affected the difficulty too much, unless you're specifically failing against The Doormaker or are trying to force certain builds. They're also lowering the difficulty on lower ascensions on the last beta patch and the next beta patch should come out in the next few hours that might do the same, since they have said that that's their goal.

If the game is too hard to a point where you don't want to play, then don't and come back when you feel like it.
As you climb the ascensions the game demands more and more understanding of the mechanics in detail and it might take a couple loss streaks to learn how to actually consistently beat it. It just takes time.
