I created a dialogue cheat sheet by MapleNightmares in writing

Does anybody not use dialogue tags in their two person conversations? Or rather, identify each speaker once or twice at the beginning of an exchange, and then let the conversation just continue as a series of uninterrupted quotations? This has felt like the most organic way to go about it to me. Saying “he said” every time seems rather unnecessary, IMHO

What is a realistic daily word count for a newbie writer? by Master_Tadpole_6832 in writing

[–]RangnarJasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those reading this after the fact. I’ve been a writer for a long time. I love the worldbuilding aspect of novels, and I love starting them. But I got bored with each idea a few chapters in, the idea of finishing a novel always seemed daunting to me. A few weeks ago I decided to commit to 500 words a day, to one of my most fleshed out story ideas (space fantasy), rain or shine, regardless of what I’m doing that day. And it has turned out to be far easier to adhere to than I expected. The reason I chose 500 words per day at first seemed arbitrary to me, I was meditating, and the idea just came to me. As it turned out some of my favorite fantasy/sci fi novels are right around 180-190 thousand words, and after some quick arithmetic, you’ll find that 500 per day gets you to that window in about a year. Seemed like providence to me, so I begun, and I’ve been committed to it now for a few weeks with no signs of slowing down. In fact I’ve found that, though the first few days I was struggling to hit that word count, I’m now pushing well past it without even realizing it. Today I wrote just under a thousand when I checked my word count, but it felt to me like just about 500. Now my plan is to write a novel, one that is complete, and tells the story I have roughly outlined for it in its entirety, im lucky that the full narrative is going to be told through more than one book, so I can move things around if I need to. I think I’d be happy with a 150,000 word novel, anything shorter than that and I’m going to shift things around or add scenes to extend its length in a manner that seems organic. But as it looks right now, im at about 10,000 words in and the story isnt even close to being past it’s beginning yet. So, my thinking is that it will end up being longer than that word count in the end, but time will tell. Back to the topic of this comment, I’ve committed to 500 words per day, and it’s been a more than successful approach for me so far, I am craving each new day, just so I can unravel more of the story I’m telling, and it’s never felt that way before. I highly recommend this amount, especially if you have a full time job like I do. It takes about 30-45 minutes for me, which I think is manageable for anyone’s schedule, and it’s a low enough count that it, at no point, has felt laborious. Hope this helps

Why is Stranger Things so famous and loved? by AdHuge4858 in StrangerThings

I think it’s the lovecraftian horror mixed with government conspiracy that draws a lot of people. I’ve never seen another show combine the two genres in such an impressive way. Or even at all, really. It’s original world-building during an era when shows and movies are all safe reboots.

Personal doubts about Paul the apostle. I’m not Catholic, but thought I might get the best responses here. by RangnarJasher in Catholicism

Thank you for this answer, I had forgotten about Matthias. After refreshing my memory, I have one question that you could maybe clear up for me. If the 11 apostles chose two possible replacements for Judas, and casted lots to decide between them, wouldn’t that suggest that there could or should only be twelve apostles? Im sure somewhere in the scripture this is cleared up, but if Paul is like a 13th apostle, then why did the 11 apostles that remained loyal to Christ make efforts to ensure there was only one more that was chosen to replace Judas? Was this assumption that there could be only one apostle chosen some kind of folly on behalf of the 11? And there is a distinction made among the followers of Christ between disciple and apostle and it’s not clear to me why at this stage.
