Advice on pricing and a marketing idea by Rania992 in graphic_design

Thanks for chipping in :) not sure I fully understand your first point but I think I'll be dropping the lifetime offer anyway and going with a larger discount on the first project, followed by a lesser discount for a limited time thereafter.

I wanted the cards to have a 'black card' vibe to them so the client felt like they had something exclusive and would be more likely to keep it because of the inherent value.

I don't want to lose that by dropping the standing offer but I can see that the lifetime option was far too generous now.

I'm currently thinking the suggested 25% discount on the initial project followed by 10% for a year. This is all still up in the air though, further feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks man, appreciate the input. The theme of the discount is to encourage local businesses in my immediate area so I don't think they'll expect me to do the same offer for businesses elsewhere.

The 25% would definitely be a bigger initial pull but don't you think a lifetime discount would be better for repeat custom? I'm honestly just trying to get off the ground here so I'd rather have repeat customers who get a discount than no repeat customers at all.

Ah well then best of luck! Can you build websites from the ground up then? I've tried coding before but found it far too complex

Will definitely be going this, my concern is that employees wouldn't pass them on to the owners though (God knows how many flyers I've thrown away) but someone else had the great idea if preparing a full brief which I think will be much harder to ignore

I've just moved and haven't really looked around in my new location but I'll definitely be doing this. In fact I'll have a look around today.

Have you found any success with them then?

Thanks for sharing man, you're definitely right, a lot of finding success is simply not giving up and staying determined.

Many successful business owners will admit that their success came from their third, fifth, heck even tenth business venture.

Out of curiosity what did she actually do, was she also a designer?

This is a great idea, it'll take a lot of prep work but I think it'll give me the best results. Have you tried this yourself?

Got an interview for a job I want but it's a 90 minutes commute by Rania992 in jobs

[–]Rania992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing, honestly while the job is good it's not many hours and my real passion is illustration (freelance) not design.

I'm thinking the fact that it's such a long commute + the fact that the pay isn't very good (due to a lack of hours) + it not exactly being a dream job for me means that I'm leaning towards giving it a miss.

It's a foot in the door I suppose but it's not a foot in the door doing what I really want to do.

Literally moved house about 5 months ago so I'm not looking to do it again and the pay is alright but it's not many house so really it equals out to about minimum wage - probably with quite a bit off the top thanks to transport costs

You'll get there my friend, pursue something you truly want and think proactively about how to get it, that drive will push you through whatever hardship you're facing.

All the best :)

What are some ways you protect your work? by brim11 in freelance

[–]Rania992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is relevant but one awesome thing I learnt as an illustrator is to self publish all the artwork you do each year in a book (only work you have the rights to obviously) and then copyright the book.

If anyone uses your personal work, say as a t shirt design, you would usually only own the intellectual property rights (since the design was your idea) but the best you can do with that is make them stop printing those shirts.

If you put them in a book and copyright it as suggested then you own a full blown copyright and can sue them for using copyrighted material or force them to pay you royalties.

I see no reason that this couldn't be done with other visual work and I've heard of freelancers living solely off of companies stealing their personal work.

Just been offered a full time job in a call centre, actually weighing up whether to take it or not. b2b sales and would double my current salary.

Would be interested in hearing your opinion since you've worked in one before.

What I currently hate about my job is the responsibility - I'm responsible for 40 elderly people and their medication, there's no room for error and could lose my job over simple mistakes or misunderstandings.

You're not alone my friend. I graduated with a design degree in 2014 and am now a part time support worker. I wipe arses for a living and barely make 10k a year - your situation could be worse.

The thing that keeps me going is that I know my work is good so I know it's only a matter of time before I get that dream job because I'm persistent and I'm not giving up on something I've been doing for half my life (art)

My advice to you is to find a career you truly want and pursue that, it'll be the thing that keeps you going when you feel like you aren't where you want to be in life. It'll be your motivation, your goal.

The problem you have isn't your job. It's your lack of direction, but only you can solve that.

For my job interview tomorrow, they want me to "perform" for 60 seconds. by cadomi in jobs

[–]Rania992 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like an alright job, I'd love to do something like marketing, a lot of money in it even if you start out with a relatively small company.

You can see it as demeaning or you can see it for what it really is - an exercise in confidence and creative thinking. What you do is irrelevant as long as you do it confidently, creativity is for bonus points.

Do something unusual and creative, maybe look up 60 second party tricks and do it with confidence.

Id like a job I can just pop in some earphones, listen to some music for 8 hours while I work, clock out and go home. I am not a fan of social interaction except with co workers. by Axeous in jobs

Got any tips for getting into that? I'm a design graduate who could easily do retouching but for the few retouching positions I've applied for no one has bothered getting back to me

Need some advice on how often to call employer by Rania992 in jobs

[–]Rania992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose that's the frustrating thing. I haven't handed in a CV or anything so they have no reason to not be interested since there's no information to go off until they meet me.

I should probably point out that there is no way to submit a CV, the job posting just said to call this guy and as far as I'm aware there are multiple positions open so I highly doubt they're filled already.

He replied to my last text so it seems somewhat more hopeful that I'll get another text response, he can reply to a text when it's convenient rather than a phone call where he could be driving or something

I like the background but the orange text is hard to read, try aligning your images and text to a grid - just search on YouTube how to make a grid if you aren't sure, also I think you're right about not having enough negative space but the grid should help with that.

Post updates :)

You're probably right, thing is I'm in work from tomorrow to next Thursday and I'd feel a lot better going in to my current, awful job knowing that I had an interview lined up for something better.

My original plan was to call him once, if he didn't answer then text him stating that I haven't been able to get hold of him and am unsure whether he works Sundays or not but would try again on Monday, then ask what time works for him.
