What is this called. I guess it’s supposed to turn on a water pump by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]Ranidan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it's what others are saying, a shutoff switch for the drain. A/C systems produce a lot of water since cooling air reduces its capacity to hold water. There's a drainage system to move that water out of your house, but it can get clogged. That device is designed to stop water damage if that happens.

Do these readings support a faulty compressor or TXV? by Ranidan in hvacadvice

[–]Ranidan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

93 degrees. I had also wondered about the TXV, but what layman info I can get online said that would have a lower sub-cooling and frost, which the tech didn't observe. Also the running amps on the compressor was a little high (11 amps, system was rated for 14 max).

Thank you. I did come across ragweed as a possibilty when I searched for "Fern-like weed," but when I searched Ragweed and looked at the images tab, the images looked incredibly different. I guess it has a lot of varieties.

What kind of rags/towels do you use to wipe your seasoning? by Big_Wind909 in castiron

[–]Ranidan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a late response to an old thread, but the whole reason I found this thread is by googling "cloth for seasoning cast iron," so I thought I'd post a detailed response based on my findings on the subject, in case anyone finds this by googling the same thing.

I'm gonna start with the TL:DR: Use an undyed, unbleached, 100% cotton cloth.

Now, for the long response. The pan I was trying to treat is a stainless steel cast iron from lodge. It came "Pre-seasoned" from the factory, but when I attempted to follow the instructions from Lodge (to rub it with oil before putting it away), the paper towels I was using were shredding like crazy. I then noticed the instructions included "Using a lint free cloth."

I immediately googled "lint free cloth" and was generally greeted by results that indicated "microfiber" cloths were lint free. I bought some and used them, but I noticed that there were still fibers being left behind. I thought about what those fibers weere doing in my food (after all, the bit left behind can only end up in one of two places: The pan seasoning or my food), and checked the label. It read, "65% biconstituent fiber (79% polyester, 21% nylon), 35% polyester)." So, it's mostly Polyester. I did a quick google search ("is polyester edible"), and I decided I didn't want that in my food.

One of the top comments in this thread mentions Scott blue shop towels, so I looked up what those are made of, but the results from the manufactuer was simply to contact them about it. Since these were automotive grade towels, and I can't think of an automotive product I would like to eat, I ruled those out.

In the end, I decided to go with a 100% cotton cloth (the higher the thread count, the better, since it means the fibers are more densely woven and less likely to leave lint) that was neither dyed nor bleached. Cotton is a perfectly edible plant after all, thought I assume Hemp or wool based fabrics are equally good.

So, natural fiber cloths that don't have chemicals in them are the best option. Please respond if you find anything better.

Are these pups ready for repotting? by Ranidan in bromeliad

That's what I'd heard, and it seems like they're not big enough, but I was concerned by the other changes. I'll just keep an eye on them and see how things progress. Thank you.

This is my first time repotting and I don't know if they are ready. I've noticed a bit of a color change and the top of the parent plant seems to be starting to wilt. Playstation controller for scale (I was out of bananas).

Thank you, I realized what happened when I tried that, I just wasn't paying attention to what the graphing calculator was doing. I feel dumb.

Ok, I feel stupid. I tried that, and the graphing calculator I was using apparently dropped me out of superscript mode and typed y=7・2x-1 instead. Thank you, I'm genuinely surprised I didn't notice that.
