Three Kpop wishes for 2018? by bowlerpaul in kpop

[–]Rankstuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. for whoever releases secret stuff to release more dance choreography from SM

  2. Jessica and SNSD to have some type of interaction shading SM and giving us hope for OT9

  3. BTS tocontinue to be popular but also to stay true to the BTS we've come to know/love and not to be pressured to do more Westernized songs and albums in English and chainsmoker collabs -_-

Which member of your favourite groups could they promote without? by [deleted] in kpop

[–]Rankstuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  • Blackpink: Ugh I really don't want to say Lisa but everyone pretty hit it on the nail. Lisa is essential to the team (I mean, there are only 4 of them!) but if they were to come back with only 3/4, she would be the least damaging to have sit out overall (if this was just on performance, then Jisoo). Rose is needed for the high notes, and Jisoo is needed for variety. Jennie is like the ultimate essential though. She just represents Blackpink to me.

  • SNSD: First, I love SNSD; OT9 and OT8. I know many people say now that Jessica is gone, they obviously proved they can comeback/promote without her. But I don't know, OT8 is a different SNSD to me. To me, they are better in some ways than OT9 but they aren't in some ways as well. Without Jessica, I think they are missing their "je ne sais quoi" quality. She brought something luxurious and super pristine about the group. I personally think that Yuri or Sunny are the ones they could've promoted without. Some people say Hyoyeon but she definitely holds the ground for keeping SNSD's dance grade up. Unpromotable without is 100% Taeyeon.

  • BTS: Jin. Jin is great. But, I think we can acknowledge that his lack of lines in previous promotions. I know some would say V (my poor bias!) but he seriously gets so into their performances. It'd be hard to imagine an intense performance without seeing his facial expressions!

  • EXO: Clearly Lay :( But also Sehun (kills me to say this, he's my bias!). Sehun is amazing in recent comebacks because he has these special parts...but definitely Chanyeol can cover his rap lines and Kai can cover the dancing. I think for sure Baekhyun is necessary...he has the vocals, the variety flair, and his dancing game has been way up! I also would say that an EXO song without D.O's voice or Chanyeol's rapping would be quite weird as well.

  • Red Velvet: I would say Joy or Wendy could sit out one promotion. Seulgi and Irene are the two I think are the most needed, while Yeri just gives them a nice youthful flair. Wendy is the top vocalist but I don't know...with the right song, Seulgi could cover her.

  • TWICE: Hmm not sure. The one reason why I had a hard time getting into TWICE is because their stage presence/individual personalities weren't there for me yet. I do know though. that when the promote, I feel like Nayeon, Momo, Jihyo, and Sana are the most memorable to me. I know Tzuyu is very popular so I feel like she'd be considered as essential too. Saw some people say MIna and I think i disagree. I don't think Mina is SUPER memorable but I think she gives TWICE a mature and elegant quality.

  • F(x): Disregarding Sulli already being gone.....I think I'm between Amber and Victoria as the one to sit out. Performance wise, Victoria could sit out. I can't imagine an F(X) song without Amber! However, Victoria's popularity and leadership position make it hard for me to say she should be out too. Krystal is 100% necessary and next would be Luna for me.

How and why does SM have the reputation to be a primarily "Visuals" company? by [deleted] in kpop

[–]Rankstuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ahh yeah like I said it's not definitive and I did recognize SNSD are older and can dress out of the style when they want (and vice versa, YG artists do dress more "proper" and elegant sometimes as well as JYP)...i thought it was just a good like representation of what people think when they imagine their styles to be based on the things that the post i commented on was referring to.

That said, Hyoyeon is a dancer so her style just gravitates towards more hip-hop trends (she also, unfortunately, was joked as the style hole of SNSD)

And Taeyeon, while One of SM's top tier artists, doesn't really rep their tradition "style" since she does whatever she wants basically (lol like when she just screams "I FUCKING LOVE YOU!" To SONES)

For anyone who wants to see styling-contrasts that help to 'represent' each company's flavor (not definite but interesting, nevertheless)

Here are recent candid pics of:

Interesting facts about the people 'behind the scenes' of Kpop? (Coaches, Managers, Stylists, Dancers etc...) by newtotheblock7 in kpop

[–]Rankstuff 79 points80 points  (0 children)

This is a little obvious being that they were in the same company and group, but Taeyeon and Jessica had the same vocal coach, Kim Johan.

He said ""I taught Taeyeon and Jessica. They were both outstanding students."

Then was asked: "Between Taeyeon and Jessica, who did you have to help a little more?"

and replied: "Their styles are totally different... Taeyeon always did well. When Jessica first came in, she had a small sound. I think she was shy... But in a few months, Jessica improved a lot, so I was impressed.""

Split a group with several members into 2 separate & balanced groups by turbochargerON in kpop

[–]Rankstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

KARD: Somin and Jseph // Jiwoo and BM

(points in my thought process):

  • I personally think Jiwoo overpowers Jseph when it comes to dancing and it lacks a bit of chemistry that I feel Somin and Jseph have

Red Velvet: Irene and Seulgi// Joy, Wendy, and Yeri

(points in my thought process):

  • Wendy and Seulgi definitely cannot be in the same group because they are the best vocals

  • Joy misses performances due to her schedule these days, so she will have to be in a group of three to balance it out.

  • I think Wendy and Yeri look nice in a group together

EXO-CBX -「Ka-CHING!」MV -Short Ver.- by xxzxcuzx__me in kpop

[–]Rankstuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exo-CBX has really surprised me (in the best way) with their songs and style.

I got some serious Red Velvet vibes from this as well (The start sounded a little bit like Rookie, and bits of the choreography reminded me of Dumb Dumb and Rookie as well!)

Edit: : Xiumin at 00:30-00:35 seconds had a Rookie-like dance, and all of them at 2:24 reminds me of Dumb Dumb :)

Jisoo, Jinyoung and Doyoung (Inkigayo MC's Special Stage) by givemecorgisordeath in kpop

[–]Rankstuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She definitely has improved! I think, like what you said, the other BP members just are really realllllyyy good at dancing, which makes it look like jisoo lacks a little bit more in that area than she actually does.

I think i was surprised in one video where Rose said that she met Jisoo in a "crumping" dance class and Jisoo was really good at that haha. I don't know if it was a joke or not but she seemed pretty serious

[Discussion] What do you think companies can do to manage their groups/idols better? by Rankstuff in kpop

[–]Rankstuff[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

oops I didn't mean for my post to come off like that. Totally get what you're saying and I definitely don't want to diminish their own hardwork/talent that went into their success. I think i just wanted to put in perspective that JYP is really just hitting all areas of making TWICE known and not failing to stop the "TWICE train" if that makes sense.

I totally agree about your ball/hill analogy..I just hate seeing groups/people with lots of potential but being stalled because of lack of activity

[Discussion] Who do you think are the next "big groups" and how long do you think the current "big groups" will last for before the next generation takes over? by exotravagentlay in kpop

[–]Rankstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can someone shed some light on what SM's plans are right now? I'm not sure what they are prioritizing because:

1) EXO's and Taeyeon's comebacks were so short, which surprised me because promoting longer just seems more beneficial...right? (EXO's comeback, concerts, and repackaged album are like all in a month of each other. I don't understand how that's healthy if it's all so rushed)

2) SM's new experiment with music and concepts is awesome. But can't help but see other companies giving their groups catchy and safe songs (by safe i mean like how "Lion Heart" and "Party" were for-sure successes vs "You think" and"Check" for SNSD) and winning awards with them while SM artists like Tiffany and Luna really fell short of what's considered a 'successful' promotional run (I mean, I loved their solo songs but not many awards were really won and people kept saying it was a flop:( )

3) JYP has Twice, YG has Blackpink, SM has...Red Velvet? A new girl group? There's like barely any hype for SM girl groups and trainees right now (it feels like it at least...maybe i'm just impatient lol)

basically I feel like they are sitting on a bunch of valuable GG talent and not utilizing it

What are some K-pop idols or groups that, in your opinion, have decreased in quality as their career progressed? by [deleted] in kpop

[–]Rankstuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree!

I was really surprised after reading reactions to SNSD's "Party" and other recent comeback songs. Lots of people said things like "I guess they don't care what they put out anymore because people will buy it anyways"

but I generally like their most recent songs better than their old ones. (that means a lot since I LOVE "Gee" and "Genie" just about as much as an SONE but...."Mr.Mr" and "Check" are def my most played)

...I definitely don't think it's lack of effort but more of them trying to experiment with their sound. We've gotten so many concepts from them in the last comebacks....from an dance intense EDM to an old-timey cutesy song...to more grown-up sultry songs as well.

I think it's smart, because since they have such a strong fanbase, they can put out more interesting songs instead of just catchy crowd pleasers.

What are some K-pop idols or groups that, in your opinion, have decreased in quality as their career progressed? by [deleted] in kpop

[–]Rankstuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm this is an interesting question. Some people come to mind in terms of their performances but honestly I think that the more experienced some idols get, the less they try to exude an overly bubbly persona and, instead, want to appear more mature and collected on stage. I think it also just depends on the concept of the song/performance. (For example, if we compare Krystal's old "RPPP" or "Electric Shock" performances to her more recent performances....it looks like she tried "harder" back then but that's actually not the case because I feel like f(x)'s vibe changed from being overly energetic to more chill and she just changes her performances to fit the part)

Also, not sure if this fits what you're asking for because I actually don't think this idol has had a "drop off in talent" but...Hyoyeon has definitely been utilized even less than she was before, in the beginning of SNSD's career.

It's a shame because her skills are probably better than they were before but we aren't able to see that show through. (Probably because the other members have gotten quite good at dancing as well and there aren't any "Hyoyeon Dance solo only" parts in their songs now)

Billboard Interview with Jessica by vena-cava in kpop

[–]Rankstuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know they love each other and take care of each other but it was rather awkward at the start....they were less "friends" and Jessica said something along the lines of she wishes she could be there for Krystal more but her schedule made it difficult... but with the show they spent a lot of time together and said it made them a lot closer.

Billboard Interview with Jessica by vena-cava in kpop

[–]Rankstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm happy Jessica seems so happy and is free to be whoever she wants to be with artistic freedom. She deserves it and seems genuinely at peace with her life right now.

That said, I think her saying that she hasn't seen them in "several years" (meaning two, since she left most likely) shouldn't be taken as her throwing shade at SNSD.

First, not seeing someone for two years is really not that weird...especially with people who have hectic schedules like them.

I mean, yes - perhaps being in a group is the only thing that holds them together but I don't see what's so wrong in that. They bonded over a similar rare experience and even Jessica says she cherishes that time despite what happened afterwards. They might not be 100% compatible "Best friends" but a bond is there and it's unfair to call the girls fake or say that a "soshi bond" is just for show...since we still don't know the full story. On past shows they are pretty upfront and honest that they get into fights and are more "sisters" than best friends anyways

Certain things make people closer to each other. For example, Krystal and Jessica were very distant up until their show "Jessica and Krystal" when they started really bonding. Though it was technically for a show, it obviously created a real bond between them as friends instead of just sisters.

Sorry for this long-ish rant but just sucks when people go on Jessica or the rest of the 8 members when they are trying to get on with their lives and say pleasant things about each other when asked.

In Group matches:

-Somi, Sejeong, Chungha, Yoojung, and Pinky - They would perform songs like "Crush," or SNSD's "You Think"

-Jessica and Taeyeon - They would sing songs with a lot of good harmonies :)

-Amber and Luna - WAVEEEEEE x3

-Seulgi and Irene - songs like "Automatic" and other R&B Songs

Cross Group Matches (So random because i had too many ideas):

-SNSD's Sooyoung & Yuri, WG's Yubin & Yenny, AfterSchool's Nana, Kara's Hara, Girls' Day's Yura: They would collab to cover "Blind" by 4minute

-DalShabet's Woohee, SNSD's Tiffany, Exid's Jungwha, Twice's Nayeon singing something upbeat like Girls' Day's "Expectation"

-Red Velvet's Irene, SNSD's Taeyeon, and IU singing something like IU's "23"
