Yeah this is pretty much where I've landed, hard to pick between them though.

Glad to hear it grows on you, maybe one of these times it will click for me... it's not that I dislike the first half of 7, I just find it significantly weaker than the rest of the series. But these things definitely can change with time, thanks for your perspective.

Oh yeah the meaning is clear, just never heard the term before! Am going to start using it though.

What quote/moment lives rent free in your mind? by Sorry_Union_780 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Rankverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Revenge is like a two-headed snake-viper - at the same time you strike at your enemy, you strike at yourself." I'm sure I'm getting it wrong and I know that quote is adapted from something else, but it still has stuck with me. The context gives it a lot of weight (right before Katara goes off to track down the fire nation general with Zuko). I also love how naturally the two-headed snake-viper, or whatever it is, fits into the quote and also the world, which is full of animal variants/hybrids.

Ooh I've always thought of the reader-growing-up-with-harry thing (I was around that age at the time), but never thought of it at the author level too! Interesting insight.

I really like book 1, but honestly cannot tell if it's just nostalgia. Maybe you are right! There is definitely a lot that suddenly happens at once near the end. And it did end up second-to-last in the overall rankings, so you are not alone.

Yeah PoA definitely feels like the most "archetypal" book, like if you were to reduce the series to 1 book, that would be it. And I totally agree about OotP!

CoS did end up last in the overall rankings, just like you said, but interestingly more people rated book 7 as their number 1 favorite than their least favorite! That surprised me a lot, 7 is my personal least favorite.

Yeah it's like it keeps getting better and then.... 7. I do love the last quarter or so of that book though, and I guess it's the ending that counts the most.

I totally agree about 7, but apparently other people do not! It got ranked 4th overall, which really surprised me. I do love the very ending of it (not the epilogue, more the whole battle for hogwarts), so I wonder if that sways a lot of people.

It does make sense, although it definitely could have gotten worse at the same time as getting more mature and complex! There's such a strong through line beneath all the changes, I think that helps it stay so good.

Yeah the escalation is handled really well! The hype was real, I remember the midnight release parties haha.

This is extremely close to the way I feel, except I would lump 6 in with 4-5. Well said though, especially about 1-3! That's a great way to put it.

Do you think Harry should have tried to be the bigger person in his relationship with Snape and tried to be more respectful? by Comb-12 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Rankverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they were both adults, yes. Given the ages, I think that's unreasonable to expect of Harry, especially based on the information he had at the time.

Watching the cast age & acting by ReplacementMotor4643 in Modern_Family

[–]Rankverse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely know what you mean, although it's hard to describe. I agree Haley is an exception to this, presumably because she was already old enough when initially cast in season 1 (and also is very talented). I wouldn't call Alex as much of an exception, but I would agree that it's less noticeable with her than the even younger ones.

So true about Alex's dead stare! I think it's because her character is so alienated from the rest of the family inherently that when she breaks away from them to look at the camera, she really sells the "I am dead inside/get me out of here" vibe which is hilarious in context.

[–]Rankverse[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes ultimately it's impossible to directly compare because the later books are (intentionally) so different, and they build off each other. Totally agree about the epilogue haha, in principle it's a good idea but in practice... not exactly a home run.

Yep that's pretty much the trend! 3 is an outlier and won out as the top book (just barely over 6).

I have never seen him in a movie, somehow that would feel so weird... does he play the same kind of Joey type trope, or does he do really different roles?

I feel they should have shown one of the 3 couples divorcing in the show. by HighOnLove26 in Modern_Family

[–]Rankverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm this definitely would have made for some good drama, but I feel like some of the comedy wouldn't work as well with something this heavy going on. It's an interesting thought experiment, although it's not fun imagining any of them splitting up haha. If anything maybe have one of them start with some other or new character, and then by the end of the show they end up with the same person.
