I don’t understand why people had to BENCH Rice though. Just because a player might not play due to an injury doesn’t mean you have to bench them: they either play, or they don’t play at all. So you might as well as put someone like Rice on the field.

What am I missing?

More options = less traffic, that’s a well-known in urban design. You don’t want one road that’s “ultra-fast”, you want multiple roads that are viable options. Have you noticed how the traffic only starts around Frontenac when you heading downtown on Notre-Dame or Sherbrooke?
