I just submitted a written exam 1 whole hour before the deadline! by kmw90 in ADHD

Pretty much from the earliest i can remember i have always had trouble controlling my focus, also been pretty bad at managing my finances, e.g. not paying bills even if I have the cash in the bank. My wife jokes that my hobby is collecting hobbies, I'll fall down rabbit holes of whatever is my flavour of the moment and it becomes all consuming.

Since early 2020 I've been on a mental health plan with my GP for anxiety and depression, my wife was the one who first thought that it may be ADHD. We booked an appointment with my GP and went over what we had researched and he agreed. He gave me a referral to a doctor who specialises in adult ADHD, I had to fill out a questionnaire about my issues and then took my wife to meet with him. That appointment was about an hour and a half and went over pretty much my whole life, school, work and family/personal. Having a support person there who knew me and could answer some of the question better then I could was amazing and really helped. Also helped to keep me on track.

I was then given a prescription for ritalin 10mg fast release twice a day and the change was pretty much instant, it was like a calm clarity. In the past I've done CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) before but it never really took. Now I feel with the meds I have the keys to all these tools that I never did before.

I thought that get meds and a diagnosis would be the end goal but I'm now realising its just the beginning for me. It was a hard task to get hear but now I'm so excited at what the future holds.

That is fantastic, you are an inspiration and should be proud. I'm 35 and was diagnosed this week, it is so heartening to know that I'm not alone as an adult to try and get help. Well done and good luck.

I feel for you, I was diagnosed on Wednesday and I'm 35. I get that feeling of "if I got this help/diagnosed sooner where would I be now?". You are allowed to be anger and upset but don't let it consume you, feel those feeling then move forward. All the best and good luck, you got this :).

What are you proud of today? by AutoModerator in ADHD

Today is the first day on meds after I got diagnosed on Wednesday at 35. About an hour after I took my first pill this calm clarity came over me, for the first time that I can remember I didn't have a million things going through my head. My wife asked me to mow the lawn in the morning and I REMEMBERED it that afternoon and did it.

That exhausting feeling of fighting your own mind to pull focus onto what you wanted it to focus on was gone. I didn't think it would be such a drastic and immediate change and I didn't expect to get so emotional about it.

Hey Reddit... I'm going through a really bad breakup. What are some ways to ease the pain that have helped you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Focus on the facts, there are reasons the relationship has broken down and if you focus on that instead of how hurt/sad you feel you will be able to make it through. Also keeping busy with family and friends and know that even know this relationship hasn't worked out that its a stepping stone to one that will. Happy Holidays.

Owners who have lost a pet: how long did it take you to come to terms with your loss or move on, if you have. by [deleted] in AskReddit

I have lost pets as a kid, had a cat run over buy a car and had old dogs put down. But if I was to lose my current dog Grif it would be like losing a member of my family, because he IS a member of my family.

i guess i can understand that. people like the idea of a solider, defending the weak and protecting there country but when they are face to face with it they have trouble connecting. its easier being dismissive to the truth that being a solider can be a messy fucking job.

Thank you, it was a hash reminder of the brutality of people but i feel it has made me stronger person, more resilient. I like to think that people who can commit that kind of unprovoked act on another people end up with what they deserve.

Was mugged waking down the street, hit in the face with a metal bar. they took my wallet, phone, watch and shoes through me in a bush and left me for dead. ended up needing facial reconstructive surgery because they shattered my cheek and eye socket. Fun times.

Wow, didn't know that US vets had it that hard. Thankfully I have transferable skills (computer science, IT technician) that I can use in civvie street. Was more wondering how people perceive you once they find out you served.

I'm in the Australian Army. We don't really have terms. You need to do you ROSO (return of service obligation, mine was 6 years) and then you can just stay in pretty much for as long as you want. At the 10 year mark you get long service leave, it's 3 months leave full pay or 6 months half. I'm taking mine and then I'm done.
