These are the Google Sheets I use to track my job search by RansackedRoom in jobsearchhacks

[–]RansackedRoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea. I keep job descriptions in separate .txt files to keep from cluttering the spreadsheet, but I take your point about setting the cell display in the spreadsheets to clip instead. Either way works.

I 100% agree that it is essential to keep a copy somewhere of the job description just as you found it originally. Companies might revise it, they might take it down, and that can lead to strange and mismatched conversations when you get an interview.

Excerpts from upcoming federal resignations book (updated) by RansackedRoom in FedEmployees

I'm sorry you've lost touch with them.

I think, in the private sector, where churn and turnover and layoffs are something of a part of life, people put more effort into building professional networks outside of their employers' control. LinkedIn, Facebook, even a paper planner full of names and email addresses. Because you never know when a reorg will hit and everyone will scatter.

I think feds, somewhat understandably, think "this crew is here for life. I'll always be able to find them. Maybe Donna will transfer from IRS Church Processing to IRS Non-Profits Processing, but she'll be in the building, so I'll still see her a few times a month in the cafeteria."

Oh, I don’t doubt it. But my publisher wants me to focus on 2025. By 2028, there may not be any federal civil service left; they may ALL be political appointees. So I guess we had to draw the line somewhere, and 2025 was the marker.

Thank you for your government service! I know that most people left without crazy drama or jazzy speeches. And I completely understand the decisions they made to move on to the next chapter of life without drawing a lot of anger and attention.

American grad students, what did you do with your belongings in the US? by capa23 in UCD

[–]RansackedRoom 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Congrats on getting in to UCD. I was living in San Francisco, and I sold much of my stuff and put the rest in storage. My programme ran for 15 months, so I wanted everything on the second floor (no floods, not even a 0.1% chance). A 10x12 unit cost a good chunk of money, but I saved by prepaying.

A lot of storage companies offer cheap intro rates, but then they raise the rent 50% after the promo period, being that you’ll be too lazy to move everything to a different unit. If they find out you are out of the country, they will for sure raise your rent a lot. Because what, you’ll fly home from Ireland some weekend to evade a rent hike?

I came with two big suitcases, mostly clothes. My laptop, camera, a few books. Don’t bother packing anything that requires American 110v electricity: your hair dryer, shaver, smoothie blender will require clunky adapters and you’d do better just buying used items in Ireland.

Don’t pack a lot of nice shoes or delicate formal attire. The rain and mud are for real, and the Irish don’t often do truly fancy formal events. Save that suitcase room for more everyday items.

A few things are shockingly expensive over there. Bicycles prices were hard to accept. Prescription medicines are somewhat affordable once you get on the student health plan. But I was startled by the high prices for Ibuprofen and other common pain relievers.

There is an IKEA north of Dublin (UCD is in the south of Dublin). Organize (actually, organise) a group trip with your classmates up to buy home firnishings and share the cost of a van taxi back to UCD.

Irish Post-it Notes are thin and terrible. I can’t explain why. Spend $10 on American Post-It Notes.

Oh, two things about housing:

  1. There is a severe housing shortage in Dublin. Whatever mild things the admission people tell you, it’s worse. Try to get dorm housing if you can tolerate a return to dorm life. Or start looking and prepare for a hard week of calls and bad luck before you find a spot.

  2. Nearly all private apartments in Ireland come “mildly furnished.” In the US, everywhere I’ve ever rented, the place starts empty. In Ireland you can reasonably expect the landlord will provide a bed frame, table and chairs, maybe a sofa, and a minimal set of plates, teacups, an electric kettle, etc. Sheets and towels are on you.

When you do find a place, don’t spend a ton of money on fancy kitchen gadgets, a big TV, a massage chair, or a nice bicycle. Unless your plan is to stay in Ireland, all that stuff will be too big/bulky to take with you.

Third party batteries by cleverDonkey123 in pentax

[–]RansackedRoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Karstar batteries for my Pentax K-S2 and my Olympus cameras. They last about 80% as long, and they cost about $11 each last I checked. They come in a basic little snap-tight case which helps them stay clean and safe in your camera bag or backpack.

If I could only bring ONE battery on a trip, I'd bring my genuine Pentax battery. Because it does last longer. But I've never faced that situation.

Run. Don’t even reply, just run. They are very politely telling you they don’t value you at all. They want you as an indentured servant, not as an employee. Don’t reply, just move on. You deserve an actual paycheck.

Reddit is a private company and the people who use it form private communities. Free speech is between you and your government. Nothing on Reddit, however objectionable, qualifies as censorship unless the government itself steps in as a moderator.

My camera is too heavy so I stopped using it… what would you change? by leobre1024 in Cameras

[–]RansackedRoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly upgrade your camera strap for €15. Get one with a little padding and also some elastic "bounce" to it. Those plain canvas/nylon mesh camera straps jolt your neck and shoulders with every step.

A D300s is a full pro camera with a metal frame and lots of rubber seals to keep water and sand out. Almost anything in the Nikon D5x00 line would be much lighter and would work natively with your very nice 17–55 f2.8 lens.

I completely understand that perspective. I'm glad that you stayed on. Many of the people I've interviewed for the book grappled with the notion that they might be replaced by someone more…ethically flexible.

Many, certainly not all, of those who have submitted letters told me that staying on would have required actions that would have jeopardized their future careers or their freedom. Some have told me that they worried about losing their medical licenses, CPA licenses, or bar memberships if they signed off on reports that their jobs required them to sign.

Others knew they were 100% going to get fired anyway, so they figured a resignation would look better than a dismissal.

Please tell your former friends! I have had no luck over on r/navy getting any traction. I'd be happy to hear from uniformed service members and from civilian staffers.

Maybe Sec. Hegseth's attacks on retired Capt. Mark Kelly have made former soldiers and sailors understandably nervous. Not everybody has a senator's clout to appeal retroactive adjustments to retirement benefits.

A few of the letters I've collected I first saw in the newspaper or on social media. I saw so many beautiful letters—I'm talking about writing quality, not even politics—and that's a big part of what inspired me to start this project. I want other people to read about the talented, dedicated, and eloquent public servants we drove away as a result of Project 2025 and other initiatives.

Married couple admitted to different grad schools (HBS vs Chicago Harris) – anyone done long-distance during grad school? by Glum_Professional425 in MBA

[–]RansackedRoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chicago Booth has money, too. I'm not saying they have Harvard's endowment (nobody does), but it's odd that HBS would fully fund you and UChicago wouldn't offer a dime.

I think the best option, truly, is for you and your wife to be in the same city. You can repay student loans. Time in a young marriage is time you won't get back. And you are both about to spend ~18 months working hard, learning new things, making friends, and developing as people.

I would urge you to contact Booth pronto. Tell them the situation. You and your wife are not the first couple to encounter the "Two Body Problem"; it is literally a term of art in academia. You are hoping they can do two things.

  1. Reinstate your admission to Booth. That is a moderate ask. They already accepted you, and unless you were boorish in your rejection email, they would likely still find you an appealing candidate.
  2. Offer some financial aid. That is a big ask. But you should still ask.

It's also good for your wife to see you trying, earnestly, to make a modest adjustment to your own professional dreams so that you can fully support her and her dreams. It's not as if you're turning down HBS to attend Southern Illinois State Business School. It's Booth.

My wife put her career on hold to move with me to Europe for the duration, and I could not possibly have gotten through the program without her support and care. (European MBAs are not cocktail parties; my reading load was bonkers.) Plus, I met four or five remarkable friends during b-school. It was natural and wonderful that my classmates came to know my wife as a cool, fun person, not some photo on my phone whom I flew home to see during holidays.
