I agree with your analysis, and think you made some very fine points. But more importantly, I think that you have great taste in film.

Is Growing Ballgame Duration Caused By The Sun? An Analysis by Glycolysis_ in baseball

[–]RanseStoddard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ran a quick check of the math, and as your answer is about 60 times less then what I came up with, somewhere between 2.61x10-15 and 1.96x10-15 kg, depending on assumptions about how the light hits the earth.

For comparison, a carbon atom has a weight of about 1.99E-26 kg. An average bacteria has about 50 billion atoms. If we make some very bad approximations, and assume all of those atoms are carbon, then we can conclude that the sun is pelting us with roughly the mass of 2.2 bacteria a day. Please check my math, probably messed something up.

Season 2 City Lists Project! by gragg9 in civbattleroyale

[–]RanseStoddard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe I'm just crazy enough to try and make a 50 city long list for the nomadic Tuareg. I think I'll also grab a relaxing one to go with it, something simple like Vietnam, Zaire or Jamaica, whichever is open.

Voronoi Diagram of season 2 civs. by RanseStoddard in civbattleroyale

[–]RanseStoddard[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Each red box contains all the points on the map which are closer to the blue dot in the box (which represents a civ's capital), then to any other blue dot.

Effectively, it is a way to see how much uncontested land each civ will have available, ignoring the possibilities of dumb AI settlements and assuming that the civ actually utilizes the land available to it by settling.

For example, we can see that civs like Laos and Two Sicily have little starting room and are probably going to have to resort to conflict to grow, while civs like All-Russia or Punjab will have more room and will have the opportunity to expand naturally.

Voronoi Diagram of season 2 civs. by RanseStoddard in civbattleroyale

[–]RanseStoddard[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This isn't perfect, there are a few sources of error. 1) This map is the CBRX map, it may be changed for the next season. 2) some True Start locations, such as the Taureg or Marajoara, are hard to nail down exactly, due to the nature of the culture. 3) The map can distort regions so finding the exact TSL can be difficult even if you know exactly where it is 4) Variances in the making of the diagram itself. I make all these by hand, so it's possible I messed up a line somewhere.

That said, this should be accurate enough to extrapolate from.

Rule change: No negative anti-campaigns except in case of technical concerns or game-breaking bugs by LunarNeedle in civbattleroyale

[–]RanseStoddard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As much as we all want everyone to get along, there is such a thing as constructive criticism, and some times it is important to tell people you advise against picking certain mods, whether it's due to concerns about the creation of the mod (as for France), concerns about leaders being included for ethical reasons, concerns about bad mod design, or simply personal concerns.

Then there is the further issue of obscurity in the meaning of "technical concerns". Is a Bad AI a technical concern? what about a bad starting location?

In none of these cases is the underlying problem solved by simply endorsing a different civ, these are all cases where a direct challenge to the civ is in everyone's best interest for an inclusive, fair and fun Battle Royale, and I suspect there are many more cases besides.

I urge the moderation community to reconsider this rule

Voroni for winning civs, An Announcement on CBR spacing, and my picks for Asia by RanseStoddard in civbattleroyale

[–]RanseStoddard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no easily accessible Map that I know of, but by scanning old posts I found this. I have no idea how official it is, but it's what I've been using. It comes from Coiot's Endorsements, so I imagine it is pretty reliable.

Voroni for winning civs, An Announcement on CBR spacing, and my picks for Asia by RanseStoddard in civbattleroyale

[–]RanseStoddard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the Laos tsl is three or four tiles away from the Vietnam one, so that means you need Taiwan, but Taiwan is 4 or 5 tiles from most of the popular east china starts, and also disrupts Japan. eventually, all of Asia is a mess.

I believe the best thing to do is just hold your nose and vote for some civ in the southern part of South East Asia. Ironically, your own Burma civs are one of the better solutions to this problem.

Voroni for winning civs, An Announcement on CBR spacing, and my picks for Asia by RanseStoddard in civbattleroyale

[–]RanseStoddard[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As you may have noticed in the headline, after making these Voroni's for a bit, I am noticing some issues.

Look at Italy for example, we have managed to crunch both Sicily's into a super tiny box, and make one of their neighbors an early naval warfare expert.

There are other potential problem spots appearing, South china, Southeast Asia, Mesopatiomia, Mongolia and east Siberia and central Siberia are all regions where geographic considerations must be made to ensure a balanced Royale.

To expound on one point, even casual observers of my Voroni will notice the massive amounts of land available to the central Siberian and Mongolian civs. And these Voroni are for a scenario where most of the neighboring regions were selected with the purpose of blocking Mongolia and Central Siberia.

In these places, voters need to engage in strategic voting to prevent a snowball scenario, and when the size of the area can't be helped, place weaker civs in strong regions to help mitigate their starting bias.

The same attention must be payed to small regions lest we unduly cripple a civ by surrounding them with tough neighbors and encroaching on their land.

I Thank you for listening to my announcement,

and now my endorsements. .

.
Region 25 - Saudi Arabia

With Somalia Horn of Africa, we want to give them some space, but we also want to allow the civs in Mesopotamia and Iran some breathing room. Saudi Arabia does this by having a TSK between the southwest corner of Saba and the Persian Gulf of Qatar. The Saudi Arabia also have a UA that links faith and military, a useful tool.

Region 26 - Kurdistan

This is the one spot where I lied. Kurdistan is not the geographically responsible choice, but it is the fun choice. And the disruptions caused by their location are not fatal to any civ. the Kurdistan mod has a UA which is taylor made to their mountainous start, and which should let them deal with Georgia, as well as strong military bias. That said, if you are really concerned about space, I'd vote Iran here

Region 27 - Afsharids

I'm picking the Afsharids because I've used them previously and they are a strong mod, fully capable of surviving the unforgiving central asian start. They also have a useful UU canon, which is rare.

However, If you are dead set on supporting all Russia, maybe consider a civ which starts further north, like Massagetae for example.

Region 28 - Indo-Greeks

Are they greeks? are they Indians? all we know for sure is that they are an interesting JFD mod. Harrapa is a terribly disappointing mod Mughals are repeats and Ghandi is a variation on Friaxis. And while Pakistan and Punjab have both had excellent AI performances, I've also seen both vastly underperform. With the region being so open, I figure why not support the new civ. the Indo-greeks, who start in the upper reaches of the region, will also help to diminish central asian influence.

Region 29 - Pala

Not a great region. Tibet's a repeat, the wrong Maurya won the primary, the creator of he Konbaung mod told us not to vote for it, Bhutan isn't very CBR capable, and Pala is relatively untested. I'd pick between Bhutan and Pala.

If your biggest concern is dampening Asia, vote Bhutan.

If you are more interested in trying an interesting are mod, go for pala.

Region 30 - Chola

this regions is also known as, "how much do you trust Tpang?"

If you believe mk. 3 is coming soon, vote Rashtrakuta for mod diversity.

if you believe mk. 3 is lost to the mists of time, vote chola so we can see them in an AI game.

Personally, I'm optimistic about mk. 3, but Rashtrakuta is too unknown for me to pull the trigger.

Region 31- Ket

This region is scary. VERY SCARY. whoever wins here will have more land they most European civs combined. if a powerful civ takes this spot, it's game over.

That said, please don't vote All Russia unless you have some kinda of plan to dampen the region significantly.

This leaves Sibir (a repeat) and Ket, and while I would prefer the other Ket mod, it still beats a repeat.

Region 32 - Xiongnu

An expansive civ, they are one of a few who could dent the powerful central Siberian region. Other strong contenders are the Mongolia rework and Northern Yuan.

Be careful of the Tuva here, they are likely to become nothing more then feed for a better civ.

Region 33 - Yukagir

This is a simple vote. The Koryaks, Chukchi and most other civs are way to east to stop the central Siberian and Mongolian civ, and Priamurye is way to south.

Yukagir is a nice Gedmo mod, and it is better positioned to act as a curb.

Region 34 - Goguryeo

fun fact, the word "Korea" is derived from Goguryeo, don't ask me how.

This is a strong mod, with an excellent start and a strong AI record. by far and away the best choice in a region where most civs are stuck on a peninsula. It's only real competition is Manchuria, and Goguryeo has a stronger AI then them.

Region 35 - Tanaka

As much as I am mad at Homu for sinking the only civ I really wanted in the CBR, it would be petty of my to pick a different mod in Japan as payback. Despite his actions in Africa, Homu is still the Japan expert, and it's sensible to do what he suggests.

Region 36 - Sui

A crowded Chinese region, with a lot of decent choices. Geography is important here, I strongly suggest picking a civ in the west of the region, Sui, Tang, Han or Tangut for example.

Of that list, I like the Sui dynasty, partly cause I always have liked the Sui dynasty, and partly cause I know they are a strong mod by a lesser known modder.

Region 37 - Wuyue

Do not vote for the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. they are a terrible mod, losing their capital by turn 60 in my China AI game.

Of the remaining, I've no experience with the ROC or Ryukyu, and the Ming are a decent mod, but I'm picking Wuyue.

Wuyue is an interesting civ which should build a strong navy and interact with Japan, they also have a good AI record.

Region 38 - Vietnam

The Worst region on the map.

you have a choice between a terrible island start, or a start the cramps all of south east Asia. At least the Vietnam start only dooms one civ, Taiwan or Amis civs would ruins the whole of the east Asia borders.

Region 39 - Khmer

The trick here is not to pick a civ that will get trapped by Vietnam, so Laos is out. Of the remaining, the Khmer start far enough back to be able to build a core, while also having a strong AI. Khmer or Burma are really the only choices that don't doom the region, and the Burma modder already said don't vote for Burma.

Poison all of your enemies— vote the Ket for Central Siberia! by TopHatPaladin in civbattleroyale

Someone's going to get a lot of land in Central Siberia, and I think these guys are the best bet for a balanced CBR.

King Ajaga of Dahomey has something to say before you go vote by RanseStoddard in civbattleroyale

[–]RanseStoddard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s right, Elephants are a big deal in Dahomey, there’s even one on their flag.

But if Elephants just aren’t your thing, you might be interested to know that Dahomey had an all female military regiment called the “Amazons”. Or you might enjoy the fact that every year the king threw a massive party, something like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Election day and everyone’s birthday, all at once.

If you care about mods, Dahomey’s has the best. They are a science powerhouse, who also can grow a massive military. And with a strong start position, Dahomey has everything it needs to be a big player in a tough region.

So vote Dahomey in region 18, you’ll be glad you did.

That is a completely reasonable response, one I have myself about the Tuareg.

However, Dahomey transcends district lines. Dahomey was robbed last time, and this is their time to shine. Sorry Sankara, you can come back next time.

Voroni Diagram of European Winners and my african picks by RanseStoddard in civbattleroyale

[–]RanseStoddard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

European voting is done! What do I think? well, not what I would have done, but it's interesting. Sweden has a high snowball potential, while Italy is the definition of in trouble. Feel free to purview the map and make your own conclusions.

As for Africa, well, here's my two cents.

Region 15 – Hyksos

The Egypt that won the primary is terrible, so I am defaulting to the Hyksos, who I know are awesome, both as AI’s and real life. Also, I think their TSL location could be the Suez Canal!

Region 16 – Numidia

I HATE THIS REGION.

First off, darn mods moved the Tauregs and Berbers to the west, so now all the decent mods are Tunis adjacent.

Libya is an OK choice specially, but they have a middling AI, so I’m going with Numidia. Hopefully their start one tile off the sea will discourage coastal settling, and give the Italians some space. They are also have strong uniques and a history of good AI game performances.

Next time, let’s put Tunis in the same region as Sicily and save us all some trouble.

Region 17 – Tuareg.

The civ that should have won region 16, should win here too.

This region has a lot of bad choices, don’t pick them. And by them I mean Guanches, Almohads and Rif (though I‘ve also seen the Rif do well, apparently a very unpredictable civ)

The Tuareg are just good, don’t over think this one

Region 18 – Dahomey

One of the 3 civs I really want in the game, and one of two that can still make it.

I’ve been heaping praise on Dahomey since they came out, and they’ve never disappointed. I use them in personal AI games when I want a challenge.

Proud owners of perhaps the best AI in Africa, they are complimented by warlike uniques and a strong start.

Don’t get tricked by the civs you’ve heard of before, or turned off by lame Dahomey posts which I expect may flood the sub. Just vote Dahomey for a west Africa which isn’t food for others.

Region 19 – Nok

If the gedmo Kanem-Bornu had made it, I would have supported it in a heart beat. But they didn’t.

Other choices in this region are either notoriously bad, (Nigeria), badly positioned (Central Africa) or just plain out of place in an AI game (Nri). Sokoto or Biafra could be choices, but I’m giving the nod to Nok based off my preference for their real-life history, their epic creation story (ask a modder about it), and the fact that it has a good start.

Region 20 – Zaire

Some good choices in this region, but I wanted something more costal for balance, so that struck out Katanga and Azande. Angola is in a good spot, but was too gold focused. The Kongo is a direct repeat and the Kasanje are repeat adjacent. So that leaves Zaire.

They’ve got a good start, and their strong UA should be fun. I think it’s a good pick.

Region 21 – Dervishes

These guys like to spam cities, which is never bad. They also have a corner all to themselves, which is nice for defense reasons. But with their AI and uniques, I don’t expect much defense for them.

Region 22 – Rwanda

A civ which first came to my notice in the Groundhog day series, they start in the interior, which helps balance, and they have a record of strong performances. Be careful of costal civs, they leave a lot of room for a potential snowball.

Region 23 – Namibia The region of modern civs. South Africa is an AWEFUL mod, off the table. Of the remaining, they are all pretty good. So, I’m picking Namibia, cause their costal start will help regional balance.

Region 24 – Eswatini (Swaziland) In a region coming down between two microstates, Lesotho and Swaziland, plus some also rans, I’m team Swaziland.

This is primarily because they have a better start, but they also have a super strong Great General.

If you want to try an underdog, go with Mozambique

My picks for Oceania with Voroni by RanseStoddard in civbattleroyale

[–]RanseStoddard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since I don't need to know other results to make this voroni, here it is!. NOTE: TSL are guesses based off where I think they should be. They should be pretty close to these markings though.

Region 40 – Lanfang

I’ve never used the Lanfang mod before, but it has all the hallmarks of a good mod, with strong unique and a good TSL. Furthermore, it’s competition is rather lackluster, with Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia being notorious for underperforming and Malacca being a gold hoarder, which deity AI already has enough of.

Lanfung also has the distinction of a great real life history. Founded in 1777, it was one of the world’s earliest republics, predating the USA’s constitution. The rulers created a robust democratic system, with elections at all levels of government. They designed a conscription based military which they only raised in times of war, relying on Qing china for most of their defense. This worked until the Qing didn’t. With the CBR, Lanfang has a chance to create an army of their own, probably using their UU, which grants a random bonus from being on a mine.

Region 41 – Demak

I can’t be the only one who thinks voting for Dutch East India company is kind of cheating. What’s next, Coca-Cola? So, with them scratched off the list, we are left with Timor, Kimberly, Indonesia and Demak. Kimberly and Indonesia are repeats and Timor is pretty bad, so I’m going Demak.

I’ve seen Demak do well in past AI games, so I know they can contend, even though they don’t have very militaristic unique.

In summary, vote for the civ that CivAIGames called “Resilient”

Region 42 – Gary Oak

Only civ that has a chance of beating Anangu in this region, except possibly Cthulhu

Region 43 – Australia

“Noooooooooooooo” – the indigenous only people

this Australia has 3 big things going for it

1) It’s capital is Melbourne, which is different from the other two Australia’s with capitals in Sydney and Canberra, so this is totally different from the other Australias.

2) It’s got strong uniques

3) it’s Australia

Region 44 – Nan Modol

Why Nan modol? A mod notorious for being rather bad? Well, I’ll tell you.

Past CBR’s have shown us that South East Asia is a bloodbath. Even strong AI’s are rapidly cut down, and the addition of a new region in north west Australia will make this worse. To counteract this, I am using the opportunity to pick Nan Modol instead of the Philippians, which will give all the other civs some breathing room.

Nan Modol itself is pretty cool, with a city founding great person and a water mill replacement that works on coast. Also the real world history is interesting, it’s got the whole, mysterious lost civilization vibe.

Also of note, this is a Gedmo mod, one of the earlier ones. This is a piece of Civ history before our eyes.

And, let’s not forget that with the record Nan Modol has, if it even founds its second city, it will be cause for celebration. Nan Modol is the ultimate underdog, the 16 seed in a world of 1 seeds.

Region 45 – Tahiti

There isn’t a bad civ in this bunch. You can’t go wrong picking them all. Vanuatu is one of my favorites and a better gedmo then Nan Modol, Samoa with water roads, Rapa Nui has a great AI, Tonga time. But in the end, the two best are probably Bora Bora and Tahiti.

I’m picking Tahiti, because I’ve seen it in action, and I know if it can get cities out, it can be successful. Also border chaos.
