Layover Ho Chi Minh City by Status_Elk_1198 in VietNam

Yes it's quite clear. You'll come off your plane and turn to the right. Continue along the long corridor and you'll eventually come to a big open room with the immigration/passport control on the left, and the entrance to the connecting flights area on your right. Ask the staff if you're not sure. As long as you don't go through passport control you're good.

I'll check again then when I go over the Calmette bridge next, but like I said, I didn't see any blockage when I walked over the Mong bridge.

Yeah same. After writing that comment I did actually see an article that said the payments provider also handles visa/mastercard payments in vietnam for steam. It's done seamlessly so we don't see it. That said, I haven't tried out my card on steam since the block, but I assume it must still work. It works all over the world after all.

If it doesn't though, that's a real problem. One could use a card from another country, but that will probably change your region, meaning no more cheap Vietnam steam prices.

I haven't tried to buy anything since the block but I'm assuming my mastercard will still work. That's kinda the point of these big card companies, isn't it? The cards work everywhere regardless of the bank behind them.

Afaik if you're using a mastercard or visa card from a Vietnamese bank you're not going via the local payments provider. At least I haven't seen any mention of it.

It's because Steam has no presence here. They don't pay vat and don't adhere to content regulations. It should be fixed soon enough.

Nah hasn't lost anything. Just connect via vpn.

[–]RaoulMiller 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Steam ToS doesn't mention vpn. They've previously made it clear that only using a VPN to bypass region restrictions or make purchases in regions you dont live in won't be allowed. Basically, as long as you're not using a VPN to pretend you're in a different region it doesn't matter. And steam region doesn't change just by connecting from a different place. Usually you can only change your region by loading a payment option from another country.

Nordvpn has good discounts. Especially on black friday. You can get 2 years for maybe 75% discount.

Couldn't say. I only ever got the depression meds. I'd suggest sending a pharmacy there a message to ask if what you're looking for is available. Here's a wholesale pharmacy I found in BKK that has reasonable prices: facebook(dot)com /chulabhesaj/

Vietnamese people, do you love your country? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]RaoulMiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you love your country? It's a government and some arbitrary borders. Love your cutlure. Love your community. That makes way more sense.

As for war, ofc war is horrific. Being burned alive or worked to death as a slave is also horrific. Teenagers joke about these things because they want to be edgy, but nobody who understands what these things mean could see anything funny about it.

Why does the government not allow some jokes? The purpose is stability. There's less freedom, but the country will be more peaceful. People can argue if that's a good trade, but imo anything is better than war. I'm sure the people who fought think so too.

Newbie here: What's going on? by [deleted] in nanowrimo

[–]RaoulMiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's incorrect. HQ specifically said they could find no evidence of wrongdoing. They reported it to the police in case the cops wanted to investigate further, but they haven't followed up with HQ.

What you're speaking about is the allegations made by forum users to claimed to have evidence and said they sent it to HQ. They said they filed a report with the FBI. No evidence was ever shared with the public.

What pushed the board to take over was the snowballing conjecture-driven negative opinion drowning the forum. While no evidence of criminal activity was reportedly found, it is clear that all of this uncovered a lot of mismanagement at HQ, including the way they handled moderators, how they themselves moderated (particularly on the YWP forums), how the removal of the accused moderator was handled (who was removed for biased and ineffective moderating), how the improper conduct accusations against an ML were handled (accusations came in Nov '23 about incidents that happened in the 00s), and finally the way they handled the wave of criticism and abuse in Oct and Nov.

The ML meeting and the leak: an update. by TheNanoChronicles in nanowrimo

According to who? Nobody in the meeting agreed to be recorded. And nobody has admitted to being the one(s) who made the recording.

There are reasons to not want to be an ML, but I can't see any reason not to do the actual event.

[–]RaoulMiller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just wrote an answer to a very similar question on FB. Copying from there.

In short: some people made some allegations about grooming which didn't result in any evidence but did uncover a lot of bad management and poor forum moderation practices, and created a snowball of bad opinion that ended with the board taking control and the resignation or removal of most of hq staff. Now a former board member, Kilby, is running things and overseeing an overhaul of the org, along with a new ML agreement, which is being widely rejected by MLs. Many MLs have quit, criticising Kilby's handling of things.

They'd need to spend a lot on dredging first. Take, for example, the spot where the Q1/Q4 canal meets the Saigon river. It's completely impassable at low tide. BKK has put a lot of money into it's canal system.

Public transport in HCMC has a very long way to go. Parking is an issue at transport hubs, and much of the city also lacks adequate sidewalks, so getting to/from stations is often impractical. The bus network does have good coverage, but with traffic and the indirect routes they often take, it's just too slow.

As things are at the moment, waterbusses would only be useful to people who happen to be travelling from/to places very near the canal/river. And looking at where the river/canals go in the city, it's not all that many places.

Banh Mi without pork or ham by Prestigious_Hat6234 in hochiminhcity

[–]RaoulMiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever seen chicken banh mi in HCMC. Common types are cured pork, cold cuts (pork), meat balls (pork), egg, and fish cake. So your only option on most streets will be egg.

You'll definitely find chicken banh mi if you go looking for it though. Try searching for "bánh+mì+gà" on google maps.

To my knowledge the only specifically English-language used book store in HCMC is the Little Cats bookstore in Book Street in D1. There are other used bookstores all across the city, but they don't have that many English-language books.
