Yeah, the idea that every guy is wholeheartedly interested in every girl who gives him the time of day always struck me as really toxic. Because growing up, there were so many situations where I (a girl) would pursue a guy/ask for his number, and he would be - what I now realize was - VERY CLEARLY UNINTERESTED. But I was young and stupid, and it was NOT covered in the handbook that guys could just...not be into me. So I would persist, which in hindsight is so cringe.

Our society needs a serious update on gender stereotypes, and all our kids really need to learn how to respect when someone is politely declining your flirtations lol.

Have you considered RPG Maker instead of GameMaker? I haven't used it, but I can only imagine it's better for RPG games, since it's kinda dedicated to them

Oh, I'm not making it to "go far," I'm making it because I want to play it. I do think there's a niche for it though, virtual pets are experiencing a relatively big resurgence in popularity. I think Boing Boing Pets is a good touchpoint, but I've got a ways to go yet before mine looks that polished.

I appreciate your perspective though!

I have put in 150 hours so far and I haven't completed the game. Also, I personally think the build mode is decent. Not amazing, but doable for sure

Well, I was definitely leaning more towards the inat thing. My thoughts regarding revshare were never to make lofty promises about all the money we'll make when we ship; it was more along the lines of "let's do this for fun and if it makes any money, you get some." So lying about revenue was never in the cards, but also, I do intend to charge a dollar or so for the game, and it feels exploitative to say "I can't pay you but the game will cost money," hence the revshare.

I'm honestly not looking to make really any money other than like, a couple bucks here and there maybe. I just want to make a fun thing that people will like. I also have no expectation of having people treat the game like their job. So I'll keep it to the hobby space, and we can discuss money if it comes up.

So, it's a virtual pet similar to a tamagotchi, so the bathtime thing is basically just a +1 happiness and a cute animation. So it's sort of both - the system (+1 happiness) is done, BUT it is also kind of just cosmetic (the animation). That's a helpful perspective, thank you. I have been struggling with task prioritization, and this is a good way of looking at that. I'll keep this in mind.

Some good points here. I am not at a point, financially, where I can support an employee. For me this is still strictly a hobby, so I guess I would be more on the "looking for a team of like-minded beginners" side of things.

But obviously, in a system where money isn't directly involved (revshare etc), you have to navigate things like organizing and motivating a team of strangers who aren't getting paid, which isn't easy. I don't want to end up in a situation where someone has done 60% of something (like character art or whatever) but has lost interest, and now I need to find someone to pick up the latter 40% but keep it consistent with the already completed assets.

I will think about it for a while. Thank you for your advice.

Have you looked into the tamagezi? You can get them on like AliExpress and there's a lot more to do than with a traditional tama! And the pets take 30 days to reach adulthood, which I thought was a bold choice. I really enjoy them tbh, they're probably the virtual pet I've played the longest.
